Justice Clarence Thomas Defends Draft Overturning Roe v. Wade

By STEVEN ERTELT

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeNews) — Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has a message for the radical abortion activists who think they can bully the Supreme Court into revising its draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade: You can’t bully us.

Abortion activists “raised hell” at some churches across the country on Mother’s Day with protests. Some fear violence throughout May as outrage grows in response to a leaked draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court that overturns Roe v. Wade.

But Justice Thomas says those mislaid plans will not work in terms of bullying the High Court to go back on its apparent decision.

Thomas spoke at the Eleventh Circuit judicial conference in Atlanta where he discussed the Supreme Court’s leaked draft opinion for the first time.

As a society, “we are becoming addicted to wanting particular outcomes, not living with the outcomes we don’t like,” Thomas said.

“We can’t be an institution that can be bullied into giving you just the outcomes you want. The events from earlier this week are a symptom of that,” Thomas said, according to reports.

Chief Justice John Roberts spoke at the same conference Thursday, May 4 where he called the leak “absolutely appalling.” He, too, said the violence and attacks from pro-abortion activists would not influence the Supreme Court’s final decision.

Pro-life pregnancy centers and pro-life advocates were already the targets of vandalism, violence, and harassment when the news broke.

At least two pro-abortion groups had called for churches, especially Catholic churches, to be the target of abortion activists’ outrage on Mother’s Day weekend.

Ruth Sent Us, a pro-abortion group that allegedly posted the addresses of the Supreme Court justices online publicly to encourage harassment, called for protests outside Catholic churches on that Sunday.

“Whether you’re a ‘Catholic for Choice’, ex-Catholic, of other or no faith, recognize that six extremist Catholics set out to overturn Roe,” the group wrote on Twitter, along with a video of abortion activists appearing to disrupt a Catholic Mass. “Stand at or in a local Catholic Church Sunday May 8.”

Another pro-abortion group, Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights, also called for protests, according to Fox News.

“Raise your voice and raise hell! Silence is your stamp of approval,” its website states. “Abortion on demand and without apology!”

The website encouraged protesters to “raise hell,” wear Handmaids Tale outfits, and conduct “die-ins.” The group also was planning a huge protest on May 14.

Abortion activists are trying to intimidate U.S. Supreme Court justices to change their mind and uphold Roe after the leaked draft opinion showed the majority voting to overturn the infamous 1973 ruling. The draft is not final, judges can change their minds, and it is not clear when the High Court will issue its final ruling on the abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, but many believe the court will overturn Roe and allow states to protect unborn babies again.

Brian Burch, president of Catholic Vote, on May 5 called on President Joe Biden to condemn the intimidation and threats from abortion activists. “President Biden must immediately and forcibly condemn these domestic terrorist threats.”

Radical abortion activists also have been advocating for pro-life pregnancy centers to be targeted in response to the leaked draft ruling. At least two pregnancy centers were vandalized in early May, and pro-life leaders have told LifeNews about being punched, harassed, and followed by radical abortion activists at protests.
