Abortion Outrages . . . Bring Freedom For Abortionists, Victimizing Of Women

By DEXTER DUGGAN

They used to be called “the weaker sex.” Then they were “the liberated sex.” Without a doubt, permissive abortion has made females the victimized sex.

Two recent examples from coast to coast continued to illustrate the second-class citizenship imposed on women since the U.S. Supreme Court invented the previously unknown fundamental liberty of abortion in 1973.

This liberty means freedom for abortion and abortionists, instead of prioritizing women’s welfare.

The examples also showed the deadly partnership between the Democratic Party and abortionists, contrasted with the likelihood that the Republican Party will stand up for women and babies.

In California, a straight party-line vote by pro-abortion Democrats prevented a bill against sex-selection abortion from even getting out of the State Assembly’s health committee on May 6. Sex-selection abortions usually target baby girls for destruction.

The Assembly is California’s lower legislative chamber.

The 13-6 negative committee vote reflects the Democratic Party’s dominance of Golden State politics, often under the control of pro-abortion so-called Catholics like aging Gov. Jerry Brown, while some Catholic Church prelates look favorably upon left-wing Democrats.

Jim Holman, a longtime Southern California pro-life activist and publisher of the online California Catholic Daily news site, commented to The Wanderer on May 16 that “six of the 13 Democrat votes to protect sex-selection abortions were from Hispanics, presumably Catholics. How many of these have been confronted by their bishops?”

For decades California Catholics have watched the bishops’ lobbying arm, the California Catholic Conference, place a priority on promoting liberal politics while downplaying pro-life concerns.

The California Family Alliance noted that sex-selection abortion is so established in California that mothers even come from foreign lands to abort baby girls there.

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, a spokesman for Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott told The Wanderer on May 20 that he would be signing the Florida Unborn Victims of Violence Act into law.

The Florida legislature is controlled by Republican majorities.

Florida Right to Life’s web site said the successful bill “will make it a crime if a person harms or injures a woman and causes the death of, or bodily injury to, her unborn child.”

The bill was given strong assistance by Remee Lee, a young woman in the news last year after her boyfriend tricked her into taking a powerful abortion drug from an intentionally mislabeled container, even though she wanted to give birth to their daughter, Memphis.

Radical pro-abortion Florida Democrat Cong. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee, was reported as saying Republicans “have wasted taxpayers’ time and money” by passing this bill, and a separate bill limiting late-term abortions, to “further limit women’s reproductive rights. It is senseless and it’s wrong.”

Once again women’s dignity and honor were spat on by a Democratic Party that dares to claim Republicans oppose women.

John Tupps, a media representative for the Florida governor, told The Wanderer, “Gov. Scott is pro-life and believes that the lives of unborn children must be protected. He looks forward to signing” the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.

The Florida Right to Life web site said: “It has been an absolute honor to work with Remee [Lee] on behalf of this much-needed legislation. She has diligently traveled to Tallahassee to speak in support of Unborn Victims of Violence in committee meetings, and was present for the vote on the House floor.

“It was appalling to watch the venom of the opposing legislators who debated that Remee, or any woman like her, should not be protected under Florida law. Her grace and dedication to help protect other women and children from experiencing what she endured has been inspiring,” the pro-life site said.

The Florida bill was sponsored by State Rep. Larry Ahern and State Sen. Kelli Stargel.

The California Family Alliance said that the bill in Sacramento against sex selection, sponsored by Republican Assemblywoman Shannon Grove, was supported by a five-to-one margin at a public hearing, with more than 50 people testifying for it.

The alliance said Grove “offered statistics showing that entire population segments are shifting toward male majorities as experts estimate that 160 million girls have been killed either . . . through sex-selection abortion or infanticide at birth by parents seeking a boy.”

Lori Arnold, research analyst for the alliance, wrote: “Although the final vote tally was not a surprise, it was still particularly troublesome to pro-life advocates in California. In a quest for sensible, life-affirming public policy, many legislators and citizens alike have searched tirelessly for even the smallest area of common ground with supporters of abortion rights,” but to no avail.

Charles LiMandri, a Southern California attorney and traditional-values activist, told The Wanderer that the health committee’s Democrats “have shown their true colors — and it is not a pretty sight. Their so-called desire to protect the rights of women now rings more hollow than ever. What of the rights of the most vulnerable of little girls — those being formed in their mothers’ wombs — who are being denied the most basic right to be born?

“This evil vote makes California a haven for those who wish to continue the monstrous practice of sex-selective abortions. And the slaughter of millions of innocent preborn girls cries out to Heaven for vengeance,” LiMandri said.

Derry Connolly, president of Southern California’s John Paul the Great Catholic University, told The Wanderer that “all murder of the unborn in the womb is extremely hideous — sex-selective abortion shows the increasing depravity of our society. We pray for all women and men to seek the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.”

The California ProLife Council didn’t respond to e-mail and voice-mail requests for comment from The Wanderer.

That California Democrats feel at liberty to cast the most extreme pro-abortion votes without fear of meaningful rebuke was on the mind of California pro-life activist Wynette Sills last fall.

Sills posted a letter to California bishops at the California Catholic Daily site after Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez’s newspaper, The Tidings, showcased leading Democratic pro-abortion legislators celebrating giving driver licenses to illegal immigrants.

Last fall the Golden State Democrats also had voted for, and Jerry Brown signed into law, bills allowing non-physicians to do abortions and allowing abortions in facilities not equipped for surgery. Still, Gomez appeared at a lectern surrounded by pro-abortion Brown and Democratic legislators.

Sills wrote to the bishops: “The political leaders you have honored are active supporters of intrinsic evil, promoting abortion in every way possible, especially targeting women and babies who are poor and vulnerable, including immigrants.

“These egregiously pro-abortion Democratic Party political leaders, many of whom are Catholic, need to be counseled for conversion or voted out of office, not given prominent front-page photo accolades in a Catholic publication,” she wrote.

LifeSiteNews.com noted at the time that Gomez violated the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ own Catholics in Political Life statement that “the Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors, or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

Not Constitutionally Protected

Meanwhile, in defense of an Arizona law, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a friend-of-the-court brief May 19 with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco.

The morally traditionalist ADF was standing up for a recent law against sex and race-based abortions, approved by the majority-Republican Arizona legislature and signed by GOP Gov. Jan Brewer.

Joining the brief, according to an ADF news release, were the pro-life Frederick Douglass Foundation, Susan B. Anthony List, Radiance Foundation, National Black Pro-Life Union, and University Faculty for Life.

An Arizona branch of the NAACP and a group called the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum are challenging the pro-life law through their attorneys with the radically pro-abortion American Civil Liberties Union.

ADF senior counsel Casey Mattox said in the news release: “Nothing about an abortion committed on the basis of sex or race is medically necessary or constitutionally protected. The fact that groups who supposedly exist to protect the interests of minorities and women are attacking this law is scandalous.”
