California Gov. Newsom . . . Another Catholic Quick-Change Artist In A Bloodied Costume

By DEXTER DUGGAN

There’s nothing subtle when pro-abortion Catholic politicians put on their actress face paint. Left-wing Democrats Nancy Pelosi of California and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York sport Ash Wednesday crosses so big and black on their foreheads that these symbols of religious devotion almost might have been applied with a brush that paints kitchen walls.

But as our Lord said, it’s not the outside appearance that counts. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like tombs having been whitewashed, which indeed outwardly appear beautiful, but inside they are full of bones of the dead, and of all impurity.”

Political thespians act the role of faithful Catholics for the merest moment, then abandon that script as soon as the bell tolls at the time to cast another vote in the chamber for the Democrats’ dominant Culture of Death.

In the land of film-making fantasy, left-wing Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom has cast off and on his Catholic costume like any well-practiced quick-change artist. In April, Newsom visited El Salvador and, looking pensive, prayed at the tomb of the slain priest St. Oscar Romero.

Then pro-abortion Newsom headed back to the Golden State, where he tries to fill as many buckets as possible with slain babies. They don’t even get tombs because they’re treated like trash.

Newsom recently got himself some news attention when he invited abortion-seeking women to come to California as a response to some other states, not even necessarily ones with dominantly Catholic populations, enacting pro-life legislation.

Elected governor last November, to fill the seat of retiring pro-abortion Catholic Dem Jerry Brown, Newsom has been sticking out his tongue at the Church for quite a while — but often not to receive Communion.

As mayor of San Francisco back in 2004, Newsom unilaterally declared gay marriage, supposedly as part of the equal protection of the law. Newsom’s impulsive order didn’t last long at that time, but was another liberal reprise of getting an issue into the courts so black-robed prestidigitators could twirl up the desired results.

Ironically, such a play-acting Catholic as Newsom gave the impetus to a pro-traditional marriage rally in Washington Square, across the street from a San Francisco Catholic church that has appeared in many movies, iconic Saints Peter and Paul with its white twin towers in North Beach.

So pleased were the moral traditionalists at showing opposition to Newsom’s immoral politics that the marriage rally gave birth to the first pro-life Walk for Life West Coast the following year, in 2005, that has been held in growing numbers every January since.

Wynette Sills, director of Californians for Life (californiansforlife.org), said on June 3 that Newsom and his wife were only “faux pious” as they prayed at St. Romero’s tomb in El Salvador “while they support the bloody, brutal, barbaric killing of 3,000 babies every day here in America.”

In a statement Sills said in part, “As we see the momentum for life surging across our nation, California, unfortunately, is going in the opposite direction, becoming increasingly hostile towards life at all stages, as demonstrated by Gov. Newsom’s recent ‘Abortion Proclamation’ inviting women from all across our country to come to California to ‘end unwanted pregnancies’. . . .

“Gov. Newsom does not speak for the millions of Californians who understand the science showing the humanity of the child in the womb and also understand the lifelong pain of abortion,” Sills said. ”His abortion invitation is abhorrent, especially to women, suggesting we are unable to succeed unless we are able to kill our children.

“We should all be working together to help women, children, and families with the resources they need, rather than promoting death,” she said.

“. . . Unfortunately, our state legislature is dominated by pro-abortion Democrats, with now a 75 percent pro-abortion super-majority, many of whom are also Catholic,” Sills said. ”Our congressional delegation from California is now represented by 46 pro-abortion Democrats and only 7 pro-life Republicans. Catholic voters have placed these abortion-supporting politicians in office.”

Fox News headlined a June 1 item by its commentator Todd Starnes, “Killer vacation: Gruesome Gavin Newsom invites women to abort babies in California.”

Starnes reported that a California pastor offered a different invitation. He said Dr. Paul Chappell, senior pastor of Lancaster Baptist Church, wrote on Facebook: “We invite any woman considering Gavin Newsom’s invite to our state to come to a Bible-believing church for counsel and help. Preborn children matter to moms and to their Creator.”

Constantin Querard, a conservative GOP political consultant, told The Wanderer: “With high taxes and regulations choking California’s economy, Gov. Newsom seems desperate to find any reason to convince people to come to California. It is tough to imagine anything more grotesque than abortion tourism.”

San Francisco Catholic Gibbons Cooney told The Wanderer: “Gov. Newsom, the political party he belongs to, and the state he governs, are in a state of moral and intellectual disorder. In this case, it is shown by his elevating the right to autonomy of one person over the right to life of another person. But it does not stop there.

“We see the results of the same disorder manifested in the city of San Francisco and the state of California, which has degenerated into a third-world condition,” Cooney said.

Steve Pehanich, director of communications and advocacy at the state bishops’ California Catholic Conference, told The Wanderer: “The Catholic teaching on the destruction of innocent unborn life is clear. We will continue our efforts to educate the public and especially our elected representatives on the best way to protect the life and dignity of everyone from conception until natural death.”

Eyes Toward Washington

Veteran California reporter and commentator Barbara Simpson, a Catholic, began her statement to The Wanderer with tongue in cheek:

“Californians should be so pleased with their new governor, Gavin Newsom. The guy who has described himself as ‘an Irish Catholic, a rebel in some respects’ has jumped on the abortion-rights bandwagon with all fours.

“He’s not letting his Church’s teachings against the killing of pre-term infants get in his way,” she said.

“Newsom has declared that California is the place for any woman to get an abortion when and how she wants it. In fact, he issued a proclamation promoting California’s support for abortion and that the state will pay for abortions for low-income people.

“It’s against U.S. law to use federal money for abortions, but state money? Okay, and Gavin says ‘count us in’ — and the invitation is open for all women. As the quiz show said — ‘Come on down’ and California will help you kill your baby,” Simpson said.

“Newsom is a man who does what he wants and everything else be damned,” she said. “While mayor of San Francisco, and married to his first wife, he declared that gay marriages would be recognized in the city, and of course that won him the gay vote. Now on the national stage, with eyes toward Washington, he’s after the baby-killer vote.”
