PHOENIX – Border smugglers have been known to light fires along the international line in order to divert attention from their activities elsewhere in the arid Southwest expanse.
But the conflagration capturing attention as the U.S. midterm elections approached was the flashpoint posed by one or more surprising groups of thousands of marchers headed northward to breach U.S. sovereignty in sheer defiance.
Some of them supposedly were fleeing the wretchedness of Honduras, but proudly carried the Honduran flag. For the purpose of planting it on U.S. soil? There was more to this assembly than a coincidental coming-together to head north. Who was provisioning it, fueling it, underpinning it?
Speculation can rush in to fill the void of information. Did the march organizers hope to incite violence at the border to serve as a signal that henceforth any group can shove its way into the Southwest as long as it’s banded together?
Had leftist U.S. judges shown them that as long as they’re willing to risk their own children’s safety at the same time, the Border Patrol dare not turn them away?
Time after time, border jumpers have shown extraordinary initiative to slip into the U.S. but exert no such energy to improve their homelands. They seem to go to any length to violate U.S. law, with a claim to want to enhance their futures, including amassing thousands of dollars to pay smugglers. However, they exhibit no enterprise to improve the territory under their own feet.
This cheapens all the diligence shown by lawful immigrants who carefully prepared and applied to enter the U.S. legally. In fact, it makes legal immigrants look like fools for not just barging in and having every reason to expect that the U.S. won’t send them back home.
Open-borders bureaucrats of the Catholic Church seem unable to grasp the distinction between charity and chaos, or between lending helping hands and having the hands bitten off.
James Asher, D.O., a retired physician in Phoenix who helps the poor, as well as being a practicing Catholic who takes his faith seriously, told The Wanderer on October 24: “The Church talks like these people and their governments are helpless in the face of poverty. What a shame our prelates have no idea how wealth is created or that socialism isn’t the answer.
“If we take this caravan in,” Asher said, “the next caravan will likely approach in the hundreds of thousands. What do we do when every poor person in Latin America has a right to emigrate and we have a duty to accept them?”
Asher said he had just listened to a porous-borders monsignor on the radio who mentioned nothing about the need to reform thieving governments down south.
However, the retired physician told The Wanderer: “How about building detention camps in isolated areas for them — in Mexico, but we’ll help out a lot — so they get vetted, then barracks-style housing, food, medical care, etc., and intensive education how to reform their governments, with a free trip back to where they came from, whenever they want to go.
“Just wholesale taking them in, as many as want to come, flooding our country with unskilled workers destined for the welfare rolls can’t be the answer,” Asher said.
Constantin Querard, a conservative Republican political consultant in Arizona, told The Wanderer on October 24: “The caravan is a reminder that our borders are not secure and that those who come here illegally have zero respect for our country or our laws.
“It is their intention to simply force their way into a country,” Querard said, “which is remarkable when you consider that few if any of the people in the caravan would dare to force their way into a simple home, yet they have no hesitation to try to muscle across a national border against the wishes of the country they are breaking into.”
Asked how he thought the marchers would affect U.S. midterm elections, Querard replied, “It is too soon to predict any sort of effect . . . because the caravan has not yet reached the border and the U.S.’s response is still unknown.”
Querard said speculation about who was financing the marchers lacks “actual proof. Still, someone is paying for all of those trucks and their fuel. It might be the people on the caravan, but who knows.”
Art Del Cueto, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, agreed with Phoenix talk radio host James T. Harris (KFYI, 550 AM) on October 18 that the march originating in Honduras was orchestrated.
Asked what Border Patrol agents think when they see such a march, Del Cueto replied that they’re “frustrated” because they know they’ll just have to fill out paperwork and release the illegal entrants into the U.S.
Although President Trump made statements that these marchers wouldn’t be accepted into the U.S. illegally, no plan had been revealed by the time this was written on October 24 about how they effectively would be denied entry.
Rob Haney, a retired chairman of the Phoenix-based Maricopa County Republican Party, told The Wanderer on October 24 that twisting the language comes before changing society.
“The political left are adherents of the axiom that verbal engineering precedes social engineering,” Haney said. “They occupy the English language high ground from which they lob verbal salvos which change the meaning of events to achieve their goals.
“Most recently,” he said, “a cabal of MSM journalists changed what conservatives would call ‘a very dangerous horde of lawbreaking invaders threatening the very survival of our republic’ to an innocuous ‘migrant caravan seeking a better life.’ Their caravan lacks a single camel.
“With this slant on the news, a Rasmussen survey of voters showed that 51 percent thought the invasion should be prevented while 38 percent believed we should allow them in,” Haney said. “Because 38 percent believed a massive invasion by force from foreign, flag-waving shock troops is not a problem, it tells us how successful the left has been at dumbing down our populace.
“The professional liars of the left permeate and corrupt all aspects of what was once our unique American culture,” Haney said. “They dominate the Democrat Party, religion, communication, education, entertainment, government bureaucracies, and unions. I pray that President Trump delivers another win over the Democrats who instigated this invasion by their blockage of the border wall and support of illegal immigration.
“Trump sits at 47 percent favorability rating, which is higher than (Barack) Obama was at this time in his presidency. This is an astonishing achievement given how the MSM denigrates him and adored Obama,” he said.
“Trump’s popularity was reflected in massive rallies in Arizona and Texas last week. If there is a red wave on November 6, it will be because of Trump’s promises-kept message, his unbounded campaign enthusiasm, and his ability to motivate the base,” Haney said.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reported that illegal immigration along the Southwest border increased by more than 100,000 people in fiscal year 2018 from fiscal year 2017, when Trump took office, “spurred by a surge in family migration from Central America.”
One might speculate that illegal entrants were encouraged anew once they saw that ideological judges hampered Trump while Congress resisted his calls for wall funding.
The News Foundation said: “A total of 521,090 either were arrested or deemed inadmissible at U.S. ports of entry along the border, according to Customs and Border Protection figures released Tuesday (October 23). That compares to 415,517 in fiscal year 2017, a year that saw historically low levels of illegal immigration in the months after President Donald Trump assumed office.”
The current march or marches apparently targeted to arrive around the November 6 U.S. elections even drew opposition in the official editorial voice of The Wall Street Journal on October 23. The Journal noted its traditional stand for “generous immigration and asylum for refugees,” but saw “migration” becoming “a political weapon to foment border chaos.”
Acknowledging questions about who was financing the marchers, the Journal said, “Criminal organizations and governments like Venezuela would benefit from chaos at the U.S. border that embarrasses the Trump administration before the election.”
The editorial concluded, “Mr. Trump is right to seek Mexican cooperation to make clear to the migrants that, whatever their plight, they cannot stampede over America’s southern border.”
With even the Journal’s own editorialist firmly opposing this iteration of the illegal invasion, the picture must appear grim indeed. At her Les Femmes – The Truth blog on October 23, Mary Ann Kreitzer recalled the unsettling 1973 novel by French writer Jean Raspail, The Camp of the Saints, in which well-off Europe is invaded from south of the Mediterranean, not by armies but by “numberless disinherited people.”
The Muslim invasion of Europe in recent years looks like nothing so much as fulfillment of Raspail’s warning, which, at the time it originally was published, struck me unfavorably as propaganda for population control.
Kreitzer, a Catholic, commented: “The novel is chilling. Can a country remain a sovereign nation when it’s overwhelmed by millions of invaders who don’t share our language and culture?… Listen to them describe themselves as ‘fighters’ while one calls Trump the anti-Christ.
“If they are fighters,” Kreitzer asked, “why don’t they stay and put their energies into fighting the corruption in their own countries? And if they want to come to our country so badly, why are they flying the flag of Honduras instead of the American flag?. . .
“This is a disaster on many levels and must be stopped! Read Camp of the Saints and vote red in the midterms,” Kreitzer blogged.
On October 22 national radio host Rush Limbaugh noted the size of rallies for Trump’s current campaign swings, including the October 19 event in suburban Mesa, Ariz. Limbaugh said they well exceeded the reported numbers of the marchers heading north to the U.S.
However, U.S. ralliers tend to follow the law even when they don’t agree with judges keeping border protection weak. But border jumpers violate whatever laws they please.
There could be more than the usual border clash coming, and Trump will look weaker – including at the ballot box — if he doesn’t defend the U.S., as he repeatedly promised.
