History Made — Again

By BARBARA SIMPSON

The monumental decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade made U.S. history — and, for the state of Texas — it did it even more so! The attorney general of that state, Ken Paxton, was so pleased with the decision that he declared that the date, June 24, would be a “state holiday.”

He may be happy about it, and certainly there are many who would agree with him, but there are many who don’t, and they’re taking their anger out with violence.

There have been street demonstrations across the country by those who are more than unhappy with the Court decision. This anger is beginning to manifest itself against the Catholic Church — the physical churches and other buildings as well as individual Catholics.

The caution to people about this is reflected in such actions as that of the Diocese of Stockton, Calif., which was warned by an agent of the Department of Homeland Security. The diocese reported that it was told that pro-abortion activists might be behind what it called “extreme violence against Catholic churches and pregnancy centers.”

The warning was said to begin the night of the court decision and beyond.

As LifeSiteNews reported, the agent told the church that “large groups with cells nationwide have already been discovered ‘casing’ parishes.” As a result, the diocese issued a “critical notice” to all clergy, parishes, and staff to develop a plan for security.

There were no reported incidents there, but across the country, the activist groups were busy spreading their hate and plans for destruction.

The group called “Jane’s Revenge” is organized nationwide and has plans for maximum destruction. Among its declarations of ‘action’ are, “We need to get angry. . . . We need them to be afraid of us.”

They, and other groups have, since the decision, wreaked havoc and destruction across the country against religious buildings and pregnancy help centers, as well as their staffs. Members of Congress and the members of the Supreme Court are also targets. Some activists have gone so far as publishing the home addresses of Court members and politicians and demonstrating at their homes.

That is, by the way, illegal — but they do it anyway.

It goes without saying that the official position of the administration is to object to the June 24 decision — even professed Catholic, President Joseph Biden, calls June 24 “a sad day.”

It should be noted that the Supreme Court decision returns to each state the right to make its own laws concerning abortion — it does not flatly outlaw abortion completely.

If you are wondering: What does the Catholic Church have to say about all this? Well, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) released a statement the afternoon of the decision, supporting it wholeheartedly, calling it “an historic day in the life of our country.”

The statement was written by the USCCB president, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, and the chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori.

A number of other high-ranking prelates spoke out in support of the decision, including Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver, and Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas — as well as Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, who is the former chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

He said he is “grateful the Supreme Court has returned the right to the people to determine public policy that protects the lives of unborn children as well as their mothers from the tragedy of abortion.”

He is urging Kansans to vote in favor of a state constitutional amendment this August, which would declare there is no right to abortion under the state constitution.

Be mindful, if passed, that law would apply only to Kansas. Each state would have to pass its own law if residents so desire.

There is much speculation as to the effect of the decision on the upcoming elections. Will Democrats come out wholeheartedly in support? What will be their attitude be toward laws statewide to outlaw the procedure? What will be the position of Republicans and how will it affect the campaigns of individual candidates? These issues will affect both state and national elections and promise to present a bitter election season.

The politically pro-abortion state of California wasted no time in putting an initiative on the November ballot which would ask voters to enshrine “reproductive freedom” in the state constitution.

On another level, the Catholic Democrat governor of California, Gavin Newsom, signed a new law which protects abortion providers, and their patients from other states, from threats of criminal penalties by their home states.

In addition, there are proposals, endorsed by Gov. Newsom, to provide financial assistance for women who want abortions to travel to California for the procedures. In other words, California will pay for the whole bill. The state will become, if you will, an “abortion sanctuary.”

It will be interesting, once the immediate emotion of the Supreme Court decision cools down, to see if Californians want their taxes to pay for hundreds of thousands of women from all over the country to travel to the state for “free” abortions.

Given that California is one of the highest taxed states in the union and that it now has a surplus of more than $100 billion dollars — the question of how Newsom would pay for all that may be moot. It would also appear that what residents think about the proposal wouldn’t matter. The politicians have the money and will do what they want to do, and taxpayers will have no say.

As for the reality of the situation, the general theme of news coverage is that if a woman can’t get an abortion, she will die. That is far from the truth, but unfortunately, news coverage often doesn’t let “truth” get in the way of reporting.

What doesn’t change in any discussion of this is the reality of the deaths of hundreds of thousands of unborn children.

And mixed in this, the pompous ranting of talk show hosts like one in San Francisco who says whatever is in the woman is not alive nor a human being until it is out and has a birth certificate! Before that, it is nothing! You only become human when you have a “birth certificate.”

God help us.
