Promising to bring “transparency” to the workings of Washington, D.C., is about like promising to bring bright light to a locked, windowless cell ten thousand feet below ground. It would take a lot of explosive power to open up that chamber.
What happens on the surface in governing this nation, or probably any nation, is what rumbles up to the surface from the less obvious, or even more obvious, networks of ideologies, interest groups, their lobbyists and manipulators, and other actors.
After Brett Kavanaugh was proposed to become an associate justice of the Supreme Court last summer by President Trump, the scandalous circus of frenzied opposition to a supposed foe of Roe v. Wade was merely the result of how forces are marshalled in the D.C. game.
After the High Court sprang Roe on the nation in January 1973, we new pro-lifers hoped that the court wouldn’t finalize a decision so obviously deeply flawed. We never could have imagined it would take more than a few years to correct something so insupportably inadequate to the rule of law.
Responding to criticisms of the magical, extralegal, anti-science notions in the Roe majority, one of the justices reportedly said that they couldn’t just put their feet up on the windowsill, to think things through longer.
Shortly thereafter, the National Right to Life Committee held its first national convention as an incorporated organization in June 1973 in Detroit, a location chosen partly in recognition of voters in industrialized Michigan having strongly rejected permissive abortion in a referendum the previous November.
Pro-life liberals and conservatives of different religions gathered in Detroit to contemplate the task ahead.
In recent years the tide had been turning against early pro-abortion political victories, so the future looked promising. But now the nation’s highest court had stomped in with hobnailed boots to pulverize dissent against its newly declared lunacy.
Revelations in later decades of how the disastrously ill-informed justices had traded off and horse-traded over the fate of tens of millions of innocent lives showed once more that society’s “best and the brightest” actually may be nothing of the sort.
More than a few interested parties had been whooping for some years from the sidelines to radically overturn U.S. structures, and this was a prime opportunity for them.
In the February 1976 issue of National Right to Life News, Gerald E. Thibodeau, an officer of the Maine Right to Life Committee, wrote that certain developments shouldn’t be so surprising after all. He wrote about activities of that era’s U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), which later was to be reorganized into today’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
When many Americans may have been thinking that the Supreme Court simply legalized permissive abortion, Thibodeau in 1976 took a look at how that decision was being used by the federal government to encourage abortion. And also how outside pressure groups had pushed for the permissive abortion that the court had gone on to produce.
Under the headline “HEW’s 5-year plan indicates anti-life push has not been just an accident,” Thibodeau’s first paragraph in National Right to Life News read:
“Many citizens were surprised and shocked to learn that HEW officials were lobbying in Congress last winter in support of federal funds for elective abortions. Others find it incredible that Planned Parenthood-World Population is now engaged in setting up abortion clinics throughout the United States.”
Two years before the Supreme Court’s national legalization of abortion, Thibodeau wrote, most Americans in 1971 had other things on their minds, but “HEW’s elite social planners were busily concocting their so-called ‘Five Year Plan for Family Planning Services and Population Research Programs’.”
(It might be noted that the president over these bureaucrats in 1971 was Republican Richard Nixon.)
Way back then, 48 years ago, the bureaucrats already said the U.S. had a “surplus” population that needed to be reduced.
This HEW plan, Thibodeau wrote, “indicates that today’s anti-life explosion is no accident — it was carefully planned. The authorship and philosophy of the Population Council and Planned Parenthood are pervasive throughout the plan.”
Two men whose writing and thoughts were woven into the report, he wrote, were Frederick S. Jaffe, vice president of Planned Parenthood, and Bernard Berelson, president of the Population Council. Jaffe wrote a memo in 1969 to Berelson titled, “Activities Relevant to the Study of Population Policy for the U.S.,” Thibodeau wrote.
A table with Jaffe’s recommendations ended up in a Planned Parenthood-World Population pamphlet titled, “U.S. Population Growth and Family Planning: A Review of the Literature,” he wrote. The table was entitled, “Examples of Proposed Measures to Reduce U.S. Fertility, by Universality or Selectivity of Impact.”
And what ideas did highly placed elitist Jaffe have in mind in 1969 for reducing the U.S. population, four years before Roe ?
Among them: restructure family, alter image of ideal family size, educate for family limitation, and abortion and sterilization on demand.
Also, nearly a half-century before the Supreme Court invented “same-sex marriage” as a constitutional requirement in 2015, Jaffe proposed, “Encourage increased homosexuality.” Jaffe seemed unconstrained with his big plans back in a day when homosexuality correctly was recognized as a disorder in personality development, not something to encourage much less view as “marriage.”
Jaffe also proposed that women be encouraged or required to work. Anyone who knows women’s responsibilities in every age must find it laughable that he thought they weren’t already working in some way or other. Presumably he meant timecard jobs outside the home, to discourage their domestic or familial aspirations tending toward childbearing.

Societies go through better and worse periods as history is made. There has been no ideal time, but some really bad ones.
As Jaffe and Berelson were dreaming of degrading the U.S., kindred spirits were at work, like radical feminist Kate Millett, also in 1969. It was the time of inventing left-wing, pro-abortion “women’s liberation,” an agenda that would fight to the death to maintain death — tens of millions of babies’ deaths. Today, cowed Chief Justice John Roberts seems no match for them.
The Cultural Revolution
In a September 1, 2014, article at FrontPageMag.com, Millett’s sister, Mallory Millett, recalled what she saw in 1969 as the revolution began while miserable women attended a New York “consciousness-raising group.” Declaring that they wanted “Cultural Revolution,” they chanted responses, Mallory Millett said.
“ ‘And how do we make Cultural Revolution?’ she (the chairperson) demanded.”
“ ‘By destroying the American family!’ they answered.”
“ ‘How do we destroy the family?’ she came back.”
“ ‘By destroying the American Patriarch,’ they cried exuberantly.”
“ ‘And how do we destroy the American Patriarch?’ she replied.”
“ ‘By taking away his power!’”
“ ‘How do we do that?’”
“ ‘By destroying monogamy!’ they shouted.”
“ ‘How can we destroy monogamy?’”
“Their answer left me dumbstruck, breathless, disbelieving my ears,” Mallory said. “Was I on planet Earth? Who were these people?” Their answer was, “By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution, and homosexuality!”
Mallory Millett went on to comment: “I’ve known women who fell for this creed in their youth who now, in their 50s and 60s, cry themselves to sleep decades of countless nights grieving for the children they’ll never have and the ones they coldly murdered because they were protecting the empty loveless futures they now live with no way of going back. ‘Where are my children? Where are my grandchildren?’ they cry to me.”
She added: “I insist that woman always has been the arbiter of society and when those women . . .in Greenwich Village set their minds to destroying the American family by talking young women into being outlaws, perpetrators of infanticide, and haters of Western law, men and marriage, they accomplished just what they intended.
“Their desire — and I witnessed it at subsequent meetings till I got pretty sick of their unbridled hate — was to tear American society apart along with the family and the ‘Patriarchal Slave-Master,’ the American husband,” Millett said.
This began a half-century ago. With depravity, deceit, and barbarity now touted as the core values of dominant media and the Democrat Party, we can only pray that the Lord doesn’t delay in ending these horrors.
