Justice Samuel Alito . . . Gets Standing Ovation At Conservative Event For Overturning Roe

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeNews) — Justice Samuel Alito received a standing ovation at a Federalist Society event for authoring the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and allowed states to protect babies from abortions.

A Reuters report described it as the “loudest applause at the event.”

As Yahoo News reported, “The hundreds of lawyers and law students in attendance gave Alito another standing ovation when a speaker onstage, Stephen Markman, a former Michigan Supreme Court justice, praised his opinion in the June ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that had protected abortion rights.”

“I do not know of any decision on any court by any judge of which that judge could be more proud,” Markman said.

During his address to the group, Alito said its work is sorely needed because courts at all levels need more jurists who stick to the Constitution.

“And boy, is your work needed today,” he said.

Here’s more:

Three other conservative justices — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett — also attended. Barrett made brief remarks praising the society, saying she had “benefited immensely” from her association with it, and she got her own standing ovation when she took the stage.

She said it was nice to hear “noise not made by protesters outside my house,” presumably a reference to protests before and after the abortion ruling, a draft of which was leaked in May. She was part of the conservative majority that overturned Roe.

“Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each state from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives,” Alito wrote.

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences,” Alito wrote. “And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”

Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Stephen Breyer authored a joint dissent condemning the decision as enabling states to enact “draconian” restrictions on women.

Polls show Americans are pro-life on abortion and a new national poll shows 75 percent of Americans essentially agree with the Supreme Court overturning Roe.

Despite false reports that abortion bans would prevent doctors from treating pregnant women for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, pro-life doctors confirm that is not the case. Some 35 states have laws making it clear that miscarriage is not abortion and every state with an abortion ban allows treatment for both.
