More Perks For Illegals

By BARBARA SIMPSON

Talking about illegal aliens in this country is one of those subjects that is filled with emotion. People either are sympathetic to those people who get into this country illegally or they are furiously against them and want them gone, the sooner the better.

The reality is that there are many millions of them here now, across all 50 states, and thousands more are getting in every day. Keep in mind that each one is literally an illegal alien — they just cross the border at will and try to melt into our population and disappear. The situation that the Border Patrol faces to enforce our border security is almost beyond comprehension, yet they deal with it all the time.

According to the latest figures released for June, crossings are at an all-time high of 1.75 million and the year isn’t over yet. It’s estimated that at least 200,000 people crossed the southern border every month, and it’s increased since then.

Despite that, the man who is the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, continues to reassure us, on behalf of the Biden administration, that the “border is secure.”

It’s interesting that he doesn’t explain just what exactly that means.

He did say, in a speech at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, that the administration is still “working to make the border more secure.” He added, without explaining, that there is a difference between the words “safe” and “secure.”

Many law enforcement officials don’t agree with Mayorkas. One, Canyon County Idaho Sheriff Kieran Donahue, calls his claim “idiotic.” He added, “We are on the cusp of complete collapse.”

Despite such dire comments, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors clearly does not agree. In fact, those supervisors have taken the dramatic move to vote and declare that illegal aliens can now work for the county — without having to provide any proof of their immigrant status.

It was a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors that declared that non-citizens can work in government positions in the county, provided that the position does not conflict with state or federal law.

For example, if they are desiring to work for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, they will still be required to provide proof of citizenship. At least that!

The proposal was authored by two local politicians noted for years for their extreme liberalism. Chair/author Hilda Solis and co-author Sheila Kuehl. According to them, the policy aims to better represent the “community” in city government. She’s talking about the “illegal community.”

It’s estimated that there are at least 880,000 non-citizens living in Los Angeles. The County Public Defender Ricardo Garcia said, requiring citizenship to work for the city government is tantamount to discrimination based on “cultural, racial, ethnic, or religious characteristics” and “that would be opposed to our core values.”

According to him, this motion, which the board did approve unanimously, “will provide equity in hiring and give the Public Defender’s office access to the most qualified applicants for employment, irrespective of their citizenship status.”

He added, “An immigrant’s experience will advance our vision, mission, and values to protect our clients’ legal and human rights and enable us to more readily realize my goal that our employees fully represent the demographics of the population that we serve.”

Whew! To hear him, those illegals are all fully equipped educationally for all those jobs in L.A. County. Sure, they are.

Somehow, while there may be some who are duly educated, judging by what I have seen of those illegally crossing the border, they are few and far between. I have been at the border and seen it. I have talked in person to law enforcement officials, local and federal, who have to deal with them on a daily basis. I have seen and talked with U.S. citizens who are residents in the area who have to deal with illegals crossing their properties regularly.

On the basis of all that I have seen, I know that what Ricardo Garcia is saying is a bunch of hot air. He says it from the safety of Los Angeles.

Solis and Kuehl say the policy aims to better represent the “community” in city government.

Solis issued a statement of her position: “Los Angeles County is a community of immigrants from each corner of the world. And while our county-government workforce reflects the community it represents, there is room for improvement. This motion seeks to make clear that the county, as one of the largest employers in the region, strives to be an inclusive and diverse workforce, and is committed to not excluding nor allowing citizenship to be a barrier to employment.”

The reaction to this move has been mixed and that’s to be expected. The feeling of conservative and liberals is dramatically different. The overall feeling of supporters is that the effort is long overdue. Those opposed see it as an excuse to put illegal aliens ahead of American citizens.

There certainly is the issue of giving illegal aliens an advantage that they haven’t earned. They broke our laws by sneaking across the border, working in this country without citizenship, probably not paying taxes, and possibly even driving without a legal license because they are not citizens. Who knows, with the liberal attitude of so many, they probably have even voted.

That last is not so far-fetched. There are many municipalities across the country which have or are attempting to pass laws that will allow non-citizens to vote in local political and school elections.

These proposals cause much controversy, and in many cases, legal intervention by the judiciary — but what is important to realize, is that there is a concerted effort out there to water down the value of the vote.

That is a dangerous path for us to follow and if it succeeds, it indeed will be the end of this democracy as we have known it.

Remember what Sheriff Donohue said about the enormous influx of illegals and the problems it has brought.

He said: “We are not safe. We are on the cusp of complete collapse.”

I fear he is correct. God Help Us.
