While its aging defenders say abortion helps their daughters and granddaughters, they never seem to notice that tens of millions of the aborted infants are female, too — their own granddaughters and great-granddaughters, who don’t benefit at all from the procedure.
Nor does it seem to occur to the abortion champions that they, too, once were unborn babies whose lives, to listen to their own words, were of no consequence whatever, valueless, and could have been terminated at the snap of a finger. Could they actually believe that about their own existence?
The abortion movement, much like the political words of its grim, shifty hero Barack Obama, is built only upon one brazen lie after another after another.
Even Communist China, with its scandalous record of massive forced abortion by the government, is more open to allowing inquiry into results of abortion than pro-abortion champions are in the Western world, a California physician wrote in an article that was picked up by the online California Catholic Daily.
“In the U.S. we are used to abortion advocates claiming that the risk of elective abortion is relatively trivial, and major medical organizations denying any link between abortion and breast cancer,” wrote pro-lifer Mary Davenport, MD, of El Sobrante, Calif., in the San Francisco Bay area.
Her article had been posted earlier by the American Thinker web site, on December 3, under the headline, “New study from China helps to prove the abortion-breast cancer link.”
“Now a powerful new study from China published . . . by Yubei Huang and colleagues suggests otherwise,” Davenport wrote. “The article, a meta-analysis pooling 36 studies from 14 provinces in China, showed that abortion increased the risk of breast cancer by 44 percent with one abortion, and 76 percent and 89 percent with two and three abortions.”
In addition, Davenport was one of three physicians whose presentations on abortion complications at an international conference last August in South Korea were abruptly canceled, another story at California Catholic Daily said.
The article by Chinese researchers published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control was titled, “A meta-analysis of the association between induced abortion and breast-cancer risk among Chinese females.”
Its conclusion: “IA [induced abortion] is significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer among Chinese females, and the risk of breast cancer increases as the number of IA increases. If IA were to be confirmed as a risk factor for breast cancer, high rates of IA in China may contribute to increasing breast-cancer rates.”
Davenport wrote at American Thinker: “This new article is another example of the recent excellent scholarship on abortion in peer-reviewed journals coming out of the People’s Republic. There is no bigger database than China, where there are an average of 8.2 million pregnancy terminations every year, and 40 abortions for every 100 live births.
“Chinese researchers and physicians are unencumbered by abortion politics, and do not cover up data showing long-term effects of induced abortion, as do their U.S. counterparts in governmental, professional, and consumer organizations,” Davenport wrote.
Later in the American Thinker article, Davenport wrote: “Unfortunately, the ABC [abortion-breast cancer] link is not unique in suffering a systematic cover-up by ideologically driven medical organizations intent on suppressing information about complications of abortion. Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal death in the U.S.A., taking the lives of hundreds of thousands of infants annually, with a cost of $26 billion. It has risen 20 percent in the last two decades.
“It causes cerebral palsy, long-term intellectual and visual handicaps, and much suffering,” the California physician continued. “There are 135 studies from diverse locations worldwide that link abortion and preterm birth. The relationship is most pronounced with multiple abortions, and very premature infants born before 28 weeks gestation, the ‘million-dollar babies’ that spend months in neonatal intensive-care units. Preterm birth disproportionately affects African-Americans.”
Davenport’s American Thinker article concluded: “It is a disgrace that a more honest discourse about difficult medical topics can be found in the People’s Republic of China than in the U.S.A. The censorship of medical journals, prevention of conference presentations, denial of grant money and faculty promotions, and self-censorship of honest scholars in academic medicine who want to tell the truth, but feel they cannot, impoverishes us, should not be tolerated.”
And on December 9, California Catholic Daily picked up an article about three U.S. physicians including Davenport, all members of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG), whose scheduled presentations suddenly were canceled at the South Korean conference last August.
A report signed by Davenport on the news page of the pro-life medical organization (www.aaplog.org/news/) on August 2 said: “Three women physicians, Donna Harrison, Mary Davenport, and Martha Shuping, were invited months ago to give lectures on complications of abortion for the MWIA, the Medical Women’s International Association.
“Donna Harrison’s presentation demonstrated that nations with laws protective of mothers and unborn babies have excellent maternal mortality statistics. Mary Davenport had a talk about abortion as a risk factor for preterm birth, a cause of some of the 15 million preterm births internationally each year. Preterm birth is the biggest cause of neonatal death.
“Martha Shuping had a presentation that included two case reports of women who suffered severe psychological harm from abortion, even though they had obvious risk factors that were not discussed in the informed-consent process,” Davenport continued. “These risk factors were actually quoted from an abortion-provider textbook endorsed by the National Abortion Federation!
“This was valuable information for physicians to hear, especially those from developing nations who are under tremendous pressure to legalize abortion due to the false belief that legalized abortion is a panacea for maternal mortality,” she wrote.
“The Interview Is Over”
With the informational presentations blocked, Davenport wrote, the women’s host, Anna Choi, head of a group of hundreds of Korean obstetrician-gynecologists who had stopped doing abortions, quickly set up a media interview for the three Americans.
About 20 minutes after the reporters began asking the Americans about their presentations, Davenport wrote, the secretary general of the Medical Women’s International Association burst in and forbade the news conference.
“I kid you not — and all of this is on camera,” Davenport added parenthetically about the MWIA official ordering the media not to do an interview.
Davenport continued: “And the Sec Gen stood in front of the camera, and refused to move, and said, ‘The interview is over.’ Then the reporters said, ‘You can’t do this. We have the freedom of the press. You are interfering with the freedom of the press.’ But the Sec Gen would not move and said, ‘The interview is over’.”
So the pro-lifers and media went down an elevator and out to an area by trash cans and a lavatory to continue their news conference, Davenport said.
“It was an incredible display of arrogance on the part of the Canadian, U.S., and European physicians at the MWIA, who initiated preventing us from speaking,” she said. “It will be interesting to see what press picks this up. I just wish it would go viral, it’s such a glaring example of exactly what we were saying about suppression of information.”
It’s interesting that the reporters dared continue their interview seeking facts about abortion complications. Had they been liberal American journalists, they probably would have snapped their notebooks and laptops shut, covered their camera lens, and apologized for bothering to listen to the pro-life side.
