What was going through the mind of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) as he spoke to the huge national March for Life in Washington, D.C., on January 19?
He said about anything the multitude could wish to hear, including this: “We’re making a lot of progress. In the House, we passed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood.”
Less than a month later, however, when the two-year federal government spending deal was agreed to in the early hours of February 9, Planned Parenthood wasn’t losing its customary taxpayer funding. It never has, despite scandal after scandal, including the shocking 2015 video revelations of abortionists selling specifically ordered body parts of aborted babies.
Although voters had given the GOP control of both the national legislative and executive functions, Republicans still didn’t show the muscle to clamp off the flood of funding to the nation’s biggest abortion factory.
Despite Paul Ryan’s fine words on January 19, didn’t he already know that he and other party leaders would do their regular surrender to the pro-abortion Democratic minority at crunch time?
Republicans could make all the excuses they wanted about legislative procedures and requirements and limitations. But the fact is that if some heavily tax-funded organization had just been revealed to be lynching five black kidnap victims per year back in the pine woods, the Republicans quickly would have devised some way to strip it of funding overnight — no excuses allowed!
And then to have called for the group’s leaders to be jailed for investigation before the next sunrise.
However, the abortion industry has killed not dozens or hundreds or thousands of black victims, but millions of them for decades — along with many millions of other preborn babies — and neither the Republicans, Democrats, nor any other political-power group cares a darn to defund the massacre effectively.
Democrats, of course, relish the slaughter because it suits their degenerate left-wing agenda. But it seems plain that despite their words, Republican leaders aren’t seriously concerned, either, to yank away public funding from assassins who tear apart, poison, or otherwise torture to death unending numbers of innocent, defenseless infants.
Despite decades of sacrifice and dedication by countless pro-life activists across the nation successfully to deliver power to politicians who say they’ll fight for the unborn, those politicians still don’t seem to fear retribution by betrayed pro-lifers.
Ryan noted at his March for Life talk that pro-lifers are the face of love.
So lovable that they’d never sit in at the offices of traitorous politicians? So lovable that they’d never shove graphic photos of aborted babies into the faces of congressmen who talk big on being pro-life but still refuse to act to match their talk?
The pols just don’t fear any retaliation that matters from pro-lifers who literally have thrown their lives into saving others’ lives.
Asked by The Wanderer about the lack of political will to cut off this funding, conservative Republican political consultant Constantin Querard replied that it’s “hard to tell where to start on this without it turning into a rant.”
Still, Querard offered this advice: “This is a political problem in Congress and it likely requires a political solution. Those in charge of the pro-life movement need to select a couple of ‘pro-life’ congressmen who voted to fund Planned Parenthood, and they need to put their all into defeating them and replacing them with pro-life congressmen who will actually defund Planned Parenthood.
“Nothing gets Congress’ attention like putting a few scalps on the wall,” he said.
The conservative Washington Free Beacon website reported on February 9: “Congressional Republicans failed to make good on their campaign promises to end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood in their latest rounds of contentious negotiations with Democrats, which largely focused on military spending and immigration.
“Despite controlling both houses of Congress and House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R., Wis.) 2017 pledge to defund the organization, Republicans were unable to implement plans to redirect taxpayer dollars to local community health centers that do not provide abortions,” the Free Beacon added.
The spending agreement was reached shortly after last week’s hard-copy issue of The Wanderer went to press on February 8.
The Free Beacon story added that not only does funding PP dampen pro-lifers’ enthusiasm to vote, but also frees up revenue streams for PP to pay for more political activity. It cited Terry Schilling, executive director of American Principles Project, expressing the view that “GOP majorities should have made defunding the group an easy decision.”
Schilling “faulted Republicans for not exhibiting the same commitment to the pro-life cause that Democrats have to supporting abortion, pointing to the failed attempt to defund Planned Parenthood during the 2017 budget reconciliation process, as well as the failed 20-week abortion ban in January,” the story said.
The Free Beacon story, by Bill McMorris, quoted Schilling: “Think about the insanity of the Republican Party giving half a billion taxpayer dollars to an organization that then goes and spends around $30 million to defeat the same Republican Party in each election cycle. Stupid doesn’t even begin to describe what the GOP has done.”
When the two-year spending agreement was reached, supporters said it would avoid the possibility of a government shutdown during that time period. President Trump promptly signed the measure.
However, in August 2015 presidential candidate Donald Trump had said he would shut down the government over the PP issue.
On August 4, 2015, The Hill political-news site reported: “Donald Trump says that he supports shutting down the government to defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of a series of controversial undercover videos of organization officials.
“The Republican presidential contender was asked on the Hugh Hewitt show Monday night if he supported the move. ‘Well, I can tell you this: I would,’ Trump replied,” The Hill said.
And CNN reported the same day in 2015: “Donald Trump said he believes Republicans should shut down the government rather than fund Planned Parenthood, the health-services group that is facing scrutiny after undercover videos of its officials emerged.
“Trump said Monday on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt’s show that the videos, which feature Planned Parenthood officials apparently discussing the sale of fetal tissue and organs for medical research, are ‘disgraceful’,” CNN said.
Strongly disappointed at the February 9 spending deal, Laura Ingraham said on her national radio program the same day, “The swamp is not being drained. The swamp is being filled” — a reference to Trump’s campaign promise to drain away all the D.C. corruption. Ingraham went on to ask, “How does Trump stand for this?”
On February 14 LifeNews.com reported: “President Donald Trump has proposed a fiscal year 2019 budget in which taxpayer dollars would be directed away from the Planned Parenthood abortion business.”
However, the news service added, it’s a different story whether his budget would be approved by Congress — because of the Senate’s pro-abortion Democrats and “a handful of pro-abortion Republicans.”
A Cabal Of RINOS
Rob Haney, a former chairman of Arizona’s Maricopa County Republican Party, based in Phoenix, told The Wanderer that Republican elites, like Sen. John McCain, have never made a priority of stopping the tax funding, although they may use this talking point to gain money and voters.
“McCain was even on former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman’s advisory board for her national organization, ‘It’s My Party Too’,” Haney said. “This cabal of Republicans in Name Only (RINOs) was formed to remove the pro-life and pro-family planks from the Republican platform. Although this effort was defeated, the viewpoints of the Republican elites have not changed.
“Former Sen. Rick Santorum has stated that McCain sided with moderates in calling social-conservative positions on abortion and marriage divisive and prevented them from coming to the floor for a vote,” he said.
“The RINOs have only toned down the hue on the color of their liberal stripes so they could more easily blend in with the conservative wave,” Haney said.
“But when it comes to obtaining their goals, they are only too willing to give up conservative positions in order to ‘compromise’ and get ‘vital’ legislation passed.
“I expect more caving on conservative issues by Speaker Ryan and (Senate Majority) Leader (Mitch) McConnell. That is their M.O. And President Trump will sign the bills and claim victory because they are the best deals he can get from the swamp. We would be oh so proud if Republicans fought as hard for conservative issues as Democrats fight for liberal issues,” Haney said.
A National Tragedy
Northern California conservative commentator Barbara Simpson told The Wanderer: “It’s not surprising that conservative Republicans are asking: What will it take for politicians of their political persuasion to stop voting for money which perpetuates abortion?
“Given the vote on the two-year budget — why is there money to fund Planned Parenthood, the outfit that makes the killing of preborn babies their main source of income? It’s a clear example of blood money,” said Simpson, a Catholic.
“What’s more astounding, we have politicians who profess their Catholicism voting in favor of funding the abortion mill. They do it with a straight face and make no apologies. Nancy Pelosi, a ‘professional Catholic’ if ever there was one, is part of the pack,” she said.
“While there is a movement to stop aborting Down syndrome babies, all the healthy ones are targets for the surgeon’s knife. The tradeoff in innocent blood is a national tragedy and a sad reflection on what this country has become — despite all the Right to Life marches,” Simpson said.
