When familiar packages at the market like Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, Eskimo Pie, and Trader Ming are being canceled for alleged racism, it’s surely in tune with the times that the signature name of Margaret Sanger has begun to be removed from some walls of the very institution she founded, Planned Parenthood.
While the worst that Aunt Jemima may have done is make kids too chubby with her syrups, Sanger’s clinics wreaked far worse harm on little kids and their moms. Sanger’s is a name “overdue” to be removed, as Planned Parenthood of Greater New York admitted on July 21.
It was as if Aunt Jemima long had been marketed as Aunt Poison Ivy or Aunt Scorpion, then the executive suite finally got the idea this is Dumbo dumb. (Wait until someone says this Disney cartoon character has to be renamed because an elephant smart enough to fly can’t be that dumb.)
As for “white privilege,” that ghost of a man, pale Joe Biden, might as well withdraw himself from the presidential race without further delay. He’s clearly feeling too much privilege to think that someone with his obvious serious incapacities deserves to occupy the White — ulp — House.
Biden said he’ll choose a “woman of color” to be his vice-presidential running mate. How super-duper gracious of old white him.
Rather than befuddled Biden condescending about who deserves to be his second fiddle, how about Biden just removing himself from the ticket rather than hammering home white privilege as meaning that the incapable but entitled get to call the shots.
Once again, misspeaking bad Catholic Joe clearly did himself no favor when he said on July 22 that Donald Trump is the first elected racist president.
Are we not just coming through turbulent times enumerating history’s presidential slaveholders? Who, by the very fact of their owning slaves, means their statutes must be destroyed?
Politico on July 22 recorded Biden as bumbling along that “no sitting president has ever done this, never, never, never. No Republican president has done this. No Democratic president. We’ve had racists, and they’ve existed, and they’ve tried to get elected president. But he’s the first one that has.”
Quite aside from Republican Trump, has Biden forgotten — yes, he has — that no less than the great liberal internationalist Democrat President Woodrow Wilson was a “scientific racist,” like other “enlightened” folk of his time, like Margaret Sanger. Wilson re-segregated federal workers and watched the racist Birth of a Nation movie with guests at the White — ulp — House.
Because of this, Wilson has been in current news — not news only back in 1920, Joe Biden — because of the decision by Princeton University to remove his name from its public-policy school and a residential college. A June 28 BBC News report quoted the university’s president that “Wilson’s racism was significant and consequential even by the standards of his own time.”
Later in the twentieth century, where nearly 78-year-old Biden spent most of his life, great liberal internationalist Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt hauled Japanese-Americans off to concentration camps over fears of their disloyalty.
Not to belabor the point, but it’s not as if forgetful Biden had to go back as far as the Civil War era — in other words, before he was born — to discover some racist Democrat leaders. Of course, amnesia may be attractive instead of remembering those decades, lasting well into the twentieth century, when his own Democrat Party was the home of the completely racist Ku Klux Klan.
Biden also thought that Trump exposed his presidential racism by saying that the pandemic virus, which originated in Wuhan, China is — believe it or not — the Wuhan, China virus. Tomorrow maybe Biden will say that Trump said a jetliner that landed from Beijing is a Beijing jetliner? The horror! The racism!
When Biden’s campaign was asked about his “first racist president” fumble, it only made matters worse on July 22 by responding more despicably, if that were possible.
Politico said Symone Sanders, a senior Biden campaign adviser, said: “There have been a number of racist American presidents, but Trump stands out — especially in modern history — because he made running on racism and division his calling card and won. He deliberately foments both, intentionally causing indescribable pain because he thinks it advantages him politically.”
Whooee, “intentionally causing indescribable pain because he thinks it advantages him”! What complete garbage from Biden’s clown show. Do a lot of voters feel like taking this bunch to the dump?
Liberal columnist Ed Kilgore posted at New York magazine on July 22: “Long before Joe Biden became the putative 2020 presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, fears were intermittently expressed that he might make some major gaffe that betrayed ignorance, forgetfulness, or insensitivity on some key point of fact or policy.
“This remark, as reported by the Washington Post, is, in my opinion, a pretty big gaffe, though Donald Trump is in no position to exploit it,” Kilgore said.
There are plenty of other Democrats who draw voter disgust, too, so let’s turn to a July 22 email to this corner from San Diego family restaurateur Joan Pernicano, who, like many other Californians, is having problems with the Golden State’s oppressive Gov. Gavin Newsom. (Another bad Catholic Democrat politician, by the way. Is there some farm where they grow these nuts?)
Pernicano tells us that “he’s affectionately called Gov. Gruesome by some, but I prefer the name Gov. Nuisance. We are now relegated to serving customers outside only. My husband has had to be very creative. It must rankle the governor that entrepreneurs are constantly reinventing the wheel as fast as he rips out the spokes and tries to flatten the tires!
“He’s trying so desperately to kill the geese that lay the golden eggs — the middle class and the mom-and-pop businesses — but then we know that Satan and his minions never sleep and it’s God they’re ultimately trying to destroy,” Pernicano said.
A Governor Who
Prays And Fasts
Now, to recognize how better Catholic Democratic politicians used to be, let’s take note of one who still is, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards. On July 16 Bel Edwards told a news conference that he was happy to honor a request made during a conference call with hundreds of Louisiana pastors.
Because of COVID-19, he said, he and his wife would pray and fast from lunch for three days, July 20-22, and he invited anyone of any denomination to join in who felt so moved.
“I know it’s a little bit unusual. This will be a spiritual diet and exercise that I, as a Catholic Christian, believe is very important anyway,” he said.
Bel Edwards said the prayers would be “for the people of Louisiana. Praying for those who are sick. Praying for those who care for those who are sick. And certainly for the families of those who have passed on.”
While we may wish Democrats had a lot more of the Bel Edwards brand in office, the party has done its best to purge itself of them except where they may be seen as a rare useful token, like Bel Edwards. And Bel Edwards at least has not let himself be pushed into adopting pro-abortion fanaticism as so many have, including Biden, Newsom, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Democratic Party politicians perceptibly have declined in quality as the party has become the skeletal face of abortion. They’re stuck with the party, and the party is stuck with them, no matter the contortions required.
Not so long ago even highly dubious accusations of sexual harassment were supposed to kill a public career – at least Republicans’, for sure. Think Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh. But as for, say, the late liberal “Lion of the Senate,” Ted Kennedy, who abandoned an attractive young woman to drown in his car in 1969, not so much.
And now Biden gets a pass on yet another issue that might otherwise end one’s hopes.
Earlier this year Tara Reade, a former staffer to then-Sen. Biden, credibly accused him of direct sexual assault 27 years ago, not for bad comments or wild gossip. And what was the censorious left-wing establishment’s reaction? It was pretty uniformly: Who the heck cares? We gotta have huggy-wuggy Joe to defeat Trump.
As feminist liberal Linda Hirshman wrote in The New York Times: “I’ll take one for the team. I believe Ms. Reade, and I’ll vote for Mr. Biden this fall.”
Still, sometimes after so much pressure builds behind a small crack in the dam, the fissure starts to widen. For years the fundamental racist-eugenicist worldview of Planned Parenthood founder Sanger was known, but the organization was allowed to shrug that off, thanks in large measure to dominant-media and in-crowd complicity.
When Hillary Clinton in 2009 and Nancy Pelosi in 2014 had stepped right up to receive their national Margaret Sanger awards, they were proud, not apologetic. The year before Hillary, the Sanger award went to Boston abortionist Kenneth Edelin, MD, convicted back in 1975 of letting a baby boy die who survived an abortion, a conviction overturned by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.
But by June 2020, the current focus of looking back even for centuries to unearth racism had widened that crack in the dam so much that Laura McQuade was ousted as president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York because of, among alleged offenses, perpetuating systemic racism.
Lo and behold, the very next month, on July 21, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York said it would remove founder Sanger’s very name from its Manhattan clinic and help rename nearby Margaret Sanger Square. Proud eugenics no longer is the liberals’ baby.
Could it be much longer before Sanger’s very image at PP will be as unwelcome as the Ku Klux Klan’s became for the Democratic Party?
Some news stories noted that she had spoken to female KKK members, and even that her theories drew admiration from German officials of Adolf Hitler’s government, who had their own views on racial “health” and “improvement.”
It’s said that where Nazism had led finally scared American liberals away from their “progressive” views on better breeding of humans. Too bad that they’re often so erroneously persuaded of their superior wisdom that they stay so unshakeable in their delusions.
Rejecting A Radical Movement
But cracks in the dam may help to drain that swamp.
In late May two pro-life black women were handcuffed by New York City police for praying on the public sidewalk outside an abortion clinic, even though rioting leftists did as they pleased at other locations. The pro-life women were Bevelyn Beatty and Edmee Chavannes. The clinic was that Manhattan one named for Sanger and now exposed to disgrace.
Beatty and Chavannes still have their names, but the clinic doesn’t.
Before you knew it, Beatty was back in the news in mid-July for smearing black paint on some of those big yellow Black Lives Matter words on New York streets whose legality was questionable to start with. How many political groups can enjoy having the city paint their messages down the middle of the road as a way to taunt the president of the nation?
As a Christian woman, Beatty rejected honoring this radical, Marxist-inspired movement, and she put some politicians on notice they can’t keep walking over the faces of the majority of Americans.
With this kind of grassroots activity, who knows what may sprout? The water coming through those cracks in the dam can water those roots.
