SHAME!

By JOSEPH MATT

Quick to join the spectacle of the mainstream media in the welcome lovefest for the alleged new “President-elect” Joe Biden, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, congratulated the projected president-elect, and called for (the usual) dialogue and compromise for the common good.

The archbishop went on to say: “We recognize that Joseph R. Biden, Jr., has received enough votes to be elected the 46th President of the United States. We congratulate Mr. Biden and acknowledge that he joins the late President John F. Kennedy as the second United States president to profess the Catholic faith.”

What could have been an opportunity for a teachable moment resulted in a scandalous statement by a leader of Catholic bishops giving false witness to what the Church teaches. You cannot have it both ways, Your Excellency. One cannot claim to profess the Catholic faith and at the same time advocate for one of the most radical pro-abortion agendas in our nation’s history, as does the current unofficial president-elect.

Endorsing the slaughter of innocent human life is found nowhere in the Gospel of Christ.

As a shepherd of the Church, you have not only let down the millions of dedicated pro-life Catholics and Christians who work the front lines in the battle for life: from volunteers at the pregnancy crisis centers, to the prayer groups who gather regularly at the abortuaries, to all Catholics who take their faith seriously. The bishops and the many clerics who have emphasized the importance of voting for life in this past election are also scandalized, but most of all it is an offense to God Himself, the Creator of life, who is very clear in His Gospel message in Matt. 25:40: “Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” There is no room in the message of Jesus Christ for the culture of death.

Archbishop Gomez, as a shepherd of the Church you have caused great scandal in your statement proclaiming Mr. Biden as a person who professes the Catholic faith. You and any of your fellow clerics who have embraced Joe Biden as a fellow Catholic professed in the Catholic faith owe an apology and a correction to all Catholics and Christians who take the Gospel of Life seriously.
