While Hurricane Dorian received emphatic round-the-clock news coverage as August swirled into September, a separate event that packed more long-range potential for damage hardly caused a ripple in national news.
That was summed up in the revelation of a history of vicious tweets, including against Catholics, by a Democratic activist who was appointed to the Virginia Council on Women by that state’s strongly pro-abortion, former black-faced Democrat governor, Ralph Northam.
Among her more-than-inflammatory tweets, Gail Gordon Donegan had said Catholic priests opposed abortion because “it results in fewer children to rape.”
Virginia’s Richmond Times-Dispatch also reported on August 23 that, among other highly offensive public tweets, Donegan had reacted to a bumper sticker that said “You can’t be both Catholic & pro-choice” by commenting, “You can be a pedophile, though!”
Did dominant U.S. media churn up prolonged national condemnation of this revelation? Or international reaction? Even brief strong national reaction? Of course not. And not. And not. Shush!
Now just imagine that, say, some state-level Republican official said Muslims or unauthorized immigrants need babies to rape or want to indulge in pedophilia.
The ferocious blasts of Hurricane Dorian along the southeastern U.S. coast would have been as nothing compared with the media fury out to utterly destroy such a GOP official and anyone else who could be dragged down with him, including Donald Trump and his entire administration.
Meanwhile, farther north on the Atlantic coast, the major Richmond news site also reported that corporate lawyer Donegan “regularly tweets pictures of herself at political events and rallies with Democratic elected officials, including Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.) and former Gov. Terry McAuliffe.”
After strong traditionalist reaction fired up in the Old Dominion, the conservative PJ Media blog reported on August 29 that Northam still had declined to ask Donegan to resign as he refused to get into the issue further.
He didn’t seek her resignation, Northam said, “but I just want to reiterate that I don’t condone that kind of language, and if she had chosen to stay on the commission, I would have encouraged her to refrain from any type of language that would be offensive to other folks.”
In her August 28 statement resigning from the Virginia Council on Women, Donegan said in part, “I do not wish to distract from the important work of the council. I will have no further comment besides this statement.”
In the same statement, Donegan apologized to those who were hurt by the tweets, said she would “be taking legal action in the near future,” and said the incident “is just another chapter in the bullying that women activists face every day on social media.” Looks like her best defense was a strong offense.
In the original story posted August 23, the Times-Dispatch reporter quoted Donegan that “my father was severely beaten in Catholic foster homes and I am an atheist. My father was orphaned at age 4, sent to live in Catholic foster homes, and severely beaten until he ran away at age 14.”
Would that sort of explanation have sufficed if our hypothetical Republican insult-hurler had a relative in the Mideast killed by an Islamist fanatic?
However the putative Catholic foster homes affected Donegan’s thinking, PJ Media said Northam indicated he just wanted to move on.
And why shouldn’t Northam, and left-wing Democrats, and also their media allies do so? This incident would be aborted before it could grow into the troublesome embarrassment that the lefties constantly seek to create against their foes, not against themselves.
Hurricanes and other natural disasters do their terrifying but expected damage around this Earth, but no hurricane or tornado ever set up networks of abortion clinics to destroy this nation’s future after the U.S. Supreme Court way back in 1973 twirled up phony justifications for abortionists.
Nor, to take another example, did weather catastrophes increasingly undermine traditional morality, with the result that political leftists claimed to be in good standing while pushing a putsch of sin and corruption.
Climbing out of the storm shelter, determined families can say they’ll rebuild for a better day. But what if Planned Parenthood, the Drag Queen Story Hour at children’s libraries, and a host of other immoralities await to twist the battered families?
The national Democratic Party is completely on board with this. And also their dominant media allies who shatter reality far worse than any howling storm splinters homes.
And, as just another example, those Catholics who, as the saying goes, were baptized Democrats first. They’ve weakened Church foundational guidance in the interests of strengthening their deeper-beloved though immoral political party.
You can’t reach your destination without an accurate map. But tripping up travelers in their daily journeys through life has become the overriding goal of dominant media.
President George W. Bush’s press secretary Ari Fleischer wasn’t considered a Tea Party favorite, but in an article posted September 3 at The Federalist website Fleischer lamented how far the media have fallen. Noting that he had “worked for several establishment Republicans,” Fleischer observed, “For eight years, the press was soft on President Obama and for four years, they have been brutal to Trump.”
Pointing to how low trust in the media has fallen, Fleischer said, “In any other business, when customers are this disgruntled, the business would re-evaluate what it’s doing and change. But…too many reporters live in a self-reinforcing, anti-Trump bubble where they praise one another for confronting the president, ignoring that they’re doing immense damage to their institutions.”
Disguised As Journalists
The Wanderer asked conservative Republican political consultant Constantin Querard about this damage. Querard replied on September 3:
“There are very few real journalists anymore. Most are partisan warriors who use the disguise of journalist to try and mask their real agenda. There are some on the right but most are on the left, and their goal is to remake America into a left-wing ‘paradise.’ Of course, that means trying to destroy every conservative and most Republicans, with President Trump at the top of their list.
“It also means covering up for and protecting liberals and most Democrats,” Querard added. “People need to identify the honest people, listen to them, and completely disconnect from the dishonest people who generate most of what is called ‘news’ today.”
Leftists’ self-delusions should make them more vulnerable, but they’re helped by dominant media running interference for them. How many hundreds of power players fly all around the world in their private jets, supposedly to oppose “global warming,” without drawing the appropriate derision?
Or, as conservative commentators Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel wrote in a recent column (see The Wanderer, September 5, p. 7B): “Obama can say whatever he wants about carbon emissions. He can shake his chin and be concerned, but when you’re spending 15 million of your own dollars on a beachfront estate in Martha’s Vineyard, you’re not too worried about the oceans rising.
“But the Democratic base doesn’t get the joke,” they added. “Democratic primary voters believe the talking points.”
On September 3, The Wanderer web-searched for article results under “Gail Gordon Donegan attacks Catholics.” In the first seven pages of results, the influential Washington Post, right across the river from Donegan’s home of Alexandria, Va., appeared once, the number seven item on the first results page.
But the Post had simply used a five-paragraph-long Associated Press story on August 25 datelined Richmond which in turn only cited the original Richmond Times-Dispatch article.
If you need a housecleaner, the Post appears excellent at sweeping embarrassments to its friends under the rug. How different this was and is from when the Post repeatedly hammers targets it hates at length.
The Post’s biggest competitor for a rabid national left-wing readership, The New York Times, appeared nowhere in the first seven pages of results. When The Wanderer specifically searched for “New York Times Gail Gordon Donegan attacks Catholics,” there was no result for the first eight pages.
When The Wanderer web-searched for “New York Times Gail Gordon Donegan,” the Times came up number one on the first results page. But this was only a four-paragraph Associated Press story datelined Richmond and citing the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the Times used, not posted until August 29 and briefly reporting that Donegan had resigned from the women’s council.
However, when The Wanderer web-searched for “New York Times Donald Trump,” the first result that immediately appeared was a September 2 opinion piece headlined, “Why Has Trump’s Exceptional Corruption Gone Unchecked?”
Hmmm, maybe Trump learned a few lessons in style from the far more corrupt New York Times?
