A Simple Question for Pope Francis . . . Has the Church Changed Its Teaching on The Reception of Holy Communion?

__ Joseph Matt, Publisher

Less than a month ago, the Courageous archbishop of San Francisco, the Most Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, proclaimed in a letter that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would not be able to receive Holy Communion in her Archdiocese of San Francisco. Many bishops offered their support to the bishop and indicated they would enforce the same action in their own dioceses. Since these actions and the recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, House Speaker Pelosi has become even more defiant and vocal against her Church and anyone else who stands in opposition to her obsessive support of abortion.

This past week the world witnessed another scandal in the throes of the Vatican. The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi was welcomed to the Vatican with a blessing from the Pope and attended a Mass at the Vatican in which she received Holy Communion.

The first offense of course was to Christ Himself. Not only was the good archbishop of San Francisco thrown under the bus, but every supporting cleric and faithful Catholic of the bishop and the Church was equally scandalized. What is the message you are sending Your Holiness? Are there two Churches? What are we to tell the First Communicants – our children – that there are choices when it comes to the reception of the Eucharist  – as we can find exceptions among the clergy? How do we evangelize – when the Church appears not to really mean what She teaches? What does a scandal like this tell the world?

Is it any wonder why there is such a high percentage of Catholics that do not believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist? Is there no longer any circumstance in which any person is not allowed to receive Holy Communion?
