The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will receive a federal grant of over $4 million over the next two years to provide legal aid to unaccompanied immigrant children who have entered the United States.

The US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants will also receive a similar grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Kevin Appleby, director of the USCCB’s Office of Migration Policy and Public Affairs, told MSNBC that “I think it’s a recognition that many of these children have valid protection claims and they need legal representation.”

“It is a result of advocacy and raising awareness about why these children are coming and why they’re fleeing,” he added.
