Leftist Nuns’ Group Opposes Challenges To HHS Mandate

CWN – March 17, 2014

The National Coalition of American Nuns (NCAN), a Detroit-based group that claims to represent several hundred women religious, has criticized Catholic organizations that are opposing the implementation of the contraceptive mandate in President Obama’s health-care program.

Sister Donna Quinn, the leader of NCAN, said that legal challenges to the mandate brought by groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor would create a situation in which “a woman can be held hostage by the owner of a business,” because she would not have access to contraceptives subsidized by her health-care plan. Quinn—whose advocacy for feminist causes has driven her to act as an escort at an abortion clinic—said: “It isn’t ‘faith and freedom’ when reproductive autonomy isn’t extended by the Catholic Church to women.”
