August 21, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Abuse Accusations… Bring Scrutiny For McCarrick’s Charity Fund

By KEVIN JONES WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNA) – Archbishop Theodore McCarrick’s roles included service on the boards of at least two foundations that gave over $500,000 combined to his personally overseen fund at the Archdiocese of Washington over a decade’s time. While the archdiocese says no irregularities have been found, Catholic News Agency’s examination of tax records provides more insight into the archbishop’s areas of influence. “Archbishop McCarrick established the ‘Archbishop’s Fund’ in January 2001 for his works of charity and other miscellaneous expenses and it continued in his retirement,” the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., told CNA. “The account was audited annually along with other archdiocesan accounts. Nothing irregular was ever noticed,” the archdiocese continued. “When the allegation of sexual abuse…Continue Reading

Bullying In High Places

By DONALD DeMARCO Fox News on August 24, 2017 carried the story of a first-grader at a California school who was sent to the principal’s office for having “mis-gendered” a transgender classmate in what is being called a “pronoun mishap.” The incident is also being called, and perhaps more correctly, “bullying.” The youngster greeted one of her classmates in the playground using his given name. She was unaware that during the summer, her classmate had undergone a transgender change. The boy now identifies himself as a girl. Subsequently, the “offender” was called out of class to the principal’s office and interrogated for approximately an hour to determine whether she had bullied her classmate by calling him by his original name…Continue Reading

Colorado Again Seeks To Punish Cake Artist Jack Phillips

August 19, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Colorado Again Seeks To Punish Cake Artist Jack Phillips

DENVER — Although the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that Colorado cannot treat cake artist Jack Phillips differently than others, state officials have continued to do just that in response to a more recent complaint filed against him. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing Phillips and his cake shop filed a federal lawsuit late August 14 against those officials for doubling down on their anti-religious hostility. On June 26, 2017, the same day that the Supreme Court agreed to take up Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, an attorney asked Phillips to create a cake designed pink on the inside and blue on the outside, which the attorney said was to celebrate a gender transition from male to female.…Continue Reading

Who Determines “Universal Values”?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Is it any of Canada’s business whether Saudi women have the right to drive? Well, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland just made it her business. Repeatedly denouncing Riyadh’s arrest of women’s rights advocate Samar Badawi, Freeland has driven the two countries close to a break in diplomatic relations. “Reprehensible” said Riyadh of Freeland’s tweeted attack. Canada is “engaged in blatant interference in the Kingdom’s domestic affairs.” The Saudis responded by expelling Canada’s ambassador and ordering 15,000 Saudi students to end their studies in Canada and barred imports of Canadian wheat. A $15 billion contract to provide armored vehicles to Saudi Arabia may be in jeopardy. Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who has been backsliding on his promises…Continue Reading

Refuting An Eastern Orthodox Priest’s Erroneous Comments

August 17, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Refuting An Eastern Orthodox Priest’s Erroneous Comments

By JAMES LIKOUDIS An article by an Eastern Orthodox priest, Fr. David Hoestetler, published in an ecumenical magazine, The Sword (which recently ceased publishing), noted correctly with regard to Protestant misconceptions that it is indeed “scriptural and biblical to venerate Mary.” Unfortunately, the article was marred by various inaccuracies and errors. For example, he stated that “Mary should not be depicted by herself in an icon in an Orthodox church.” This is a surprising comment from an Orthodox priest since many such icons (showing the All-Holy and Immaculate Virgin alone with uplifted arms in intercessory prayer) are found in Russian Orthodox churches. One can also think of the veneration given similar icons as Tender Mary (umileme), the icon Holy Virgin…Continue Reading

By COURTNEY GROGAN BALTIMORE (CNA) — Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson pledged the fraternal organization’s continued efforts to aid and rebuild persecuted Christian communities in the Middle East, during his August 7 address at the 2018 Knights of Columbus convention in Baltimore. Anderson also unveiled a new pilgrim icon, Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians, created for the Knights by Italian artist Fabrizio Diomedi. The icon will travel from parish-to-parish across the country to raise awareness, show solidarity, and inspire support for persecuted Christians. In his opening remarks at the convention, taking place August 7-9, Anderson said that he hopes that this “pilgrim icon program” will “focus the eyes of our Church on the sacrifice of so many…Continue Reading

A Book Review… Finding A Map For Matters Of Life And Death

By DONALD DEMARCO Matters of Life & Death: A Catholic Guide to the Moral Questions of Our Time, by Gerard M. Verschuuren (Angelico Press, Brooklyn, NY, 2018, 201 pp.). Available in paperback at amazon.com for $16.95. The state of perplexity and the need for guidance has long been characteristic of human beings. Rabbi Moses Maimonides wrote The Guide for the Perplexed in the twelfth century to help his people reconcile religion with science. In 1977 E.F. Schumacher published A Guide for the Perplexed for those who lost sight of the vertical dimension of life and were suffocating in materialism. Gilad Atzmon penned a 2001 novel entitled A Guide to the Perplexed. Whether one is confused, perplexed, or bewildered, one needs…Continue Reading

In his address at the July 21, 2018 “Humanae Vitae at 50” conference brilliantly organized by Fr. Sean Connolly at Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, N.Y., which I had the great pleasure of attending (see Fr. Sean Connolly’s summary, “A Parish Celebrates . . . ‘Humanae Vitae at 50’ Welcomes Outstanding Speakers,” The Wanderer, August 9, 2018, p. 1A), the moral theologian and spiritual author Fr. Donald Haggerty made the telling observation that the radical theological ideas rampant over the years immediately following Vatican II have of late enjoyed an unhappy resurgence. It…Continue Reading

Are Globalists Plotting A Counter-Revolution?

August 13, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Are Globalists Plotting A Counter-Revolution?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN On meeting with the EU’s Jean-Claude Juncker last month, Donald Trump tweeted: “Both the U.S. and the EU drop all Tariffs, Barriers and Subsidies! That would finally be Free Market and Fair Trade.” Did Larry Kudlow somehow get access to Trump’s phone? We know not. But, on hearing this, Steve Forbes, Stephen Moore, and Arthur Laffer broke into the “Hallelujah” chorus of Handel’s Messiah. “Amen,” they thundered in The New York Times. Trump should declare “total trade disarmament” to be national policy and make free trade his “legacy” to America. Such a proclamation, they wrote, would assure Trump the “moral high ground” in the global debate and transform him from “evil disrupter of international commerce to…Continue Reading

How Not To Resolve A Discrepancy

August 12, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on How Not To Resolve A Discrepancy

By DONALD DeMARCO Procrustes, according to the Greek legend, was a robber who carried with him an iron bed on which he compelled his victims to lie. If the victim was shorter than the bed, he stretched him until he fit the bed. If the victim was longer than the bed, he cut of a portion of his legs to make the body conform to the length of the bed. In either case, the victim died. The term “Procrustean Bed” has come to mean forcing something to fit, sometimes ruthlessly, into an unnatural scheme. Ultimately, Procrustes met his Nemesis in the form of Theseus who slayed robbers and monsters he encountered in his travels from Trozen to Athens. Like many…Continue Reading
