The Liberal Mind: Its Genesis And Propensities

January 29, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on The Liberal Mind: Its Genesis And Propensities

By JUDE DOUGHERTY Foe of the inherited, symbolized by crown and miter, the liberal, although politely agnostic with respect to the existence of God, is a practical atheist hostile to religion and to religious education. Knowingly or not, he is likely to subscribe to a social determinism with allegiance to Emil Durkheim, if not Marx, and to a psychological determinism, notably advanced by Sigmund Freud. The liberal dogmas to which he subscribes have been translated into an educational philosophy by John Dewey and installed as official ideology of the secular state school. The liberal mind does not hold itself accountable to a natural order, let alone to a divinely established plan governing nature and human nature. Lacking a sense of…Continue Reading

What Is The Holy Eucharist?

BY JOESIXPACK One day a messenger came into the court of King St. Louis of France all out of breath from excitement. He exclaimed, “Your Majesty, hurry to the church! A great miracle is taking place!” “What kind of miracle?” asked the saintly king. “A great miracle! A priest is saying Holy Mass, and after the consecration, instead of a Host, there is visible on the altar Jesus Christ Himself. Hurry before it disappears!” The king remained quiet, which greatly surprised the messenger. “Well, isn’t Your Majesty coming?” asked the messenger. “No!” replied the king. “Let them who have any doubt about the Real Presence of our Lord in the Eucharist go and see. As for me, even if I…Continue Reading

A Look At The Iowa Caucuses

January 27, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on A Look At The Iowa Caucuses

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD This week’s edition of The Wanderer will be the last before the Iowa Caucuses formally kick off the 2020 race for the White House. And while the focus of the February 3 caucuses is on the Democratic race for the nomination, the Republicans will also caucus on the same night, at the same time. So what is a caucus and what do the participants do? Well, for starters, a caucus is not like a primary election where a voter can just check a box for his favorite candidate and go on about his day. A caucus, if done correctly, is a bit of work. First, anyone who will turn 18 by the election (November 3)…Continue Reading

Considering Her Own Record . . . Does Impeacher Pelosi Really Hope Error Can’t Be Erased?

By DEXTER DUGGAN Every now and then one sees an impromptu street interview where passers-by don’t even know the names of powerful Washington figures influencing American life, for instance, the vice president or chief justice of the United States, much less the chairman of the Federal Reserve. (Spoiler: Mike Pence, John Roberts, and Jerome Powell.) If new mandates are imposed on every citizen of the nation, or the economy waxes or wanes, the reason might as well be astrological vibrations or magical crystals, for all the clueless sidewalk interviewees seem to know. Even worse, the same pedestrians may be instantly familiar with daily details of the lives and fortunes of numerous self-entranced, ephemeral entertainment stars whom the older generation barely…Continue Reading

Crimes And Rumors Of Crimes

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Given the current unpleasantness surrounding the impeachment proceedings on the floor of the Senate, many wonder just what constitutes a “high crime” or “misdemeanor.” In reflecting on past occasions that might have been considered worthy under the Constitution’s definition, this writer’s eye drifted to a letter that arrived some five years ago. It’s still sitting on my desk. The author was one Beth Cobert, “Acting Director of the White House Office of Personnel Management,” commonly known as OPM. Cobert’s letter explains that since June 2015, OPM “has offered credit and identity theft protection services at no charge to individuals impacted by the cyber incident involving personnel records. Because your data — which may have included your personal…Continue Reading

Minnesotans March For Life Again

January 24, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Minnesotans March For Life Again

By PEGGY MOEN ST. PAUL, Minn. — The annual Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life rally took place at noon on January 22, just hours before President Donald Trump announced he would attend and address the national March for Life on January 24. But Trump had a presence at the St. Paul march all the same. One young man in the packed crowd of thousands carried a cutout of President Trump, shown smiling and wearing a suit. He held the placard aloft on the capitol steps. “Re-elect the President” said the caption. Agreeing with that in more forceful terms was Tony Blondell of Rochester, Minn., who waved a U.S. flag and a banner that read “Trump 2020. No more BS.” “I’m…Continue Reading

The Spiritual Power Of “Popular Devotions”

January 23, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on The Spiritual Power Of “Popular Devotions”

By JAMES MONTI The midnight Mass of Christmas, when celebrated with all the “pomp and circumstance” that befits the Incarnation of the Son of God, can be a very powerful spiritual event in our lives, leaving in its wake impressions that can profoundly shape the course of our path in entering the new year to follow. Even those Catholics who sadly neglect their faith for most of the year feel instinctively drawn to it and show up in large numbers. At a Christmas midnight Mass I attended last month at St. John’s Church in Stamford, Conn., what particularly struck me was the manner with which a statue of the Christ Child was borne to the altar in the entrance procession.…Continue Reading

The Dowry Of Mary . . . Many Catholics Can Share In The Upcoming Rededication

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY In the centuries before the Reformation, England was regarded as the Dowry or “special portion” of our Lady — that is, the country was particularly noted for its Marian devotion. This came at least in part from the act of King Richard II (who reigned from 1377-1399) in offering the country to her in the fourteenth century. The famous Wilton Diptych, a small painted portable altarpiece, depicts him kneeling before our Lady, the Christ Child and accompanying angels, and offering his kingdom as a “dos” or dowry to the Blessed Virgin, and thus entrusting it to her protection. It could be said, though, that the idea of England as the Dowry of Mary extends beyond the…Continue Reading

Sunshine The Eskimo

BY JOE SIXPACK Years ago, a bishop of Alaska told of an Eskimo boy, John. He was called Sunshine before he had a Christian name, as his parents were pagan. Once when he was two years old, Sunshine had convulsions; he couldn’t breathe and seemed to be dying. Holding the babe in her arms, the mother looked at the father. She told him she would take the child outside and leave him to die, because no one must be allowed to die inside an Eskimo igloo. The bishop was present and decided to baptize the boy secretly. The mother stepped past the bishop to carry the child outside. He stopped her and asked for some water. He dipped his handkerchief…Continue Reading

Bishop Strickland . . . The Real Presence Of Jesus Christ In The Eucharist – Continued

January 20, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Bishop Strickland . . . The Real Presence Of Jesus Christ In The Eucharist – Continued

By MOST REV. JOSEPH STRICKLAND A recent Pew Research study revealed, to the shock of some, that “just one-third of U.S. Catholics (31 percent) say they believe that during Catholic Mass, the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Jesus.” I was not shocked. I was heartbroken. It is sadly reflective of the drastic failure in many efforts to teach the Catholic faith since the Second Vatican Council. The Bible, the early Church Fathers, the Christian Tradition and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church all teach that the bread and wine consecrated at Holy Mass truly become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the Divine Son of God. This great mystery is at the heart of…Continue Reading
