In R (Nicklinson & Anor) v. Ministry of Justice; R (AM) v. Mosul has been a city with a Christian presence for more than 1,700 years, but now the radical militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has banished them and is trying to expand its territory. Our brothers and sisters in the faith were told that they must leave…Continue Reading

“What Prayer Does Not Dare to Ask”

July 30, 2014 breaking Comments Off on “What Prayer Does Not Dare to Ask”

Rome, July 29, 2014 (Zenit.org) Father Edward McNamara, LC Answered by Legionary of Christ Father Edward McNamara, professor of liturgy and dean of theology at the Regina Apostolorum university. Q: Many of us are perplexed by the Third Roman Missal translation for the collect of the 27th Week of Ordinary Time, particularly the meaning of the phrase, “pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare to ask.” What exactly would genuine prayer not dare to ask? One wonders if this is an accurate translation of the Latin text and, if so, how it is to be understood. The prayer, as given, seems to have little connection with the “dynamic…Continue Reading

July 25, 2014 breaking Comments Off on 2 Christian Brothers Face Jihadist Threat in Iraq: Will They Stay or Flee?

Rome, July 27, 2014 (Zenit.org) By Oliver Maksan There is no doubt in the mind of 23-year-old Haram. With his second child on the way, he is prepared to rush his family out of town at a moment’s notice: “My tank is always full,” he says. “If the situation escalates I’ll grab my wife and child and flee,” he adds with determination. Haram’s older brother has also made his choice—to stay, no matter what. Mohand’s certainty reflects an even bigger decision he made many years ago: to become a Chaldean Catholic priest. Along with some 5,000 fellow believers—most of whom have fled there from overrun Christian communities—the brothers are trapped in the Iraqi town of Kirkuk, the capital of an oil-rich region…Continue Reading

July 24, 2014 breaking Comments Off on Bishops: Obama’s Executive Order on Discrimination ‘Implements Discrimination’

Washington, D.C., July 23, 2014 (Zenit.org) The bishop-Chairmen of two USCCB Committees responded with concern to President Obama’s July 21 executive order to prohibit federal government contractors from what the Administration deems “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” discrimination and to forbid “gender identity” discrimination in the employment of federal employees. The problems the bishops identify in the order relate both to the flaws in its core prohibitions, and to its lack of religious freedom protection. Two USCCB Chairmen – Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty and Bishop Richard J. Malone of Buffalo, Chairman of the Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth – together issued the following statement on Monday.…Continue Reading
