Rome, August 31, 2014 (Zenit.org) Father John Flynn, LC The ratio of female to male infants continues to decline in India and a recent report by the United Nations warned that urgent action is needed to reverse the trend. The report, “‘Sex Ratios and Gender Biased Sex Selection: History, Debates and Future Directions,” was published by the organization UN Women. The ratio has gone from 976 girls to 1000 boys in 1961, to 927 girls in 2001, and to 918 girls in 2011. Estimates of how many deaths attributable to sex selective abortion and neglect of newborn girls vary widely, the report explained. One estimate for the period of 1981-2005 is ten million. (Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Thursday met with Cardinal Antonio Maria Vegliò, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants, to discuss the plight of those fleeing the Islamist violence in Iraq. The so-called Islamic State controls large areas of both Syria and Iraq, and has been conducting a campaign of terror, especially against religious minorities, including Christians. (Vatican Radio)  Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI celebrated a special Mass Sunday morning upon conclusion of the Schuelerkreis, a yearly gathering of theologian Joseph Ratzinger’s former students. The liturgy was held in the church of the Campo Santo Teutonico, or German cemetery within Vatican City. Theologian Karl-Heinze Menke, Dogmatic Professor at the University of Bonn, was the primary relator at the liturgy.
