By TERENCE P. JEFFREY “They’re killing people.”That was the simple declarative sentence President Joe Biden uttered in response to a question a reporter asked him as he left the White House on Friday, July 16.“On COVID misinformation, what’s your message to platforms like Facebook?” the reporter had shouted as the president was walking toward Marine One.Biden turned and walked directly toward the reporter.“They’re killing people,” he said.“I mean, it really — look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated,” he said. “And they’re killing people.”At her regular briefing the day before, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had explained how the administration was working with social media companies, including Facebook, in the hope of getting them to adopt…Continue Reading

By RAY CAVANAUGH It sounds too extreme to be true. But such a murder indeed took place on August 11, 1921, when Fr. James Coyle, a pastor of the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham, Ala., was gunned down by Rev. Edwin Roscoe Stephenson, a Southern Methodist Episcopal minister and Ku Klux Klan member who was irate that Fr. Coyle had married his 18-year-old daughter to a Puerto Rican man.Coyle — who was born in Ireland’s County Roscommon in 1873 — received a Jesuit education in Ireland and later headed to Rome, where he attended the Pontifical North American College. Soon after his priestly Ordination on May 30, 1896, he sailed to Alabama. There he served as an instructor and,…Continue Reading

No Church, No Liturgy

July 25, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on No Church, No Liturgy

By DONALD DeMARCO The ongoing discussion concerning the liturgy has been welcomed, insightful, informative, and productive. All the while it has been taken for granted that there would be a church in which the liturgy would be celebrated. That was never an item for discussion. This assumption that liturgy would have its proper home, however, is being called into question these days in Canada. As of July 7, 2021, the unmarked graves of children at the now-closed Kamloops Indian Residential School located in British Columbia have resulted in at least 35 churches, most of them Catholic, being set afire or vandalized. Five Catholic churches have been burned to the ground.Arson and vandalism are never justifiable. They were, however, rationalized, as some…Continue Reading

Is Biden Really The Lincoln Of Our Time?

July 24, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Is Biden Really The Lincoln Of Our Time?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Traveling to Philadelphia on July 15, President Joe Biden laid out in apocalyptic terms the gravity of the “threat” to American democracy from Republican efforts to reform and rewrite state election laws.“We are facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not hyperbole. Since the Civil War. The Confederates back then never breached the Capitol as insurrectionists did on January 6.”Biden is inviting a comparison of what he faces with what Abraham Lincoln faced when he took office in 1861 with seven Southern states having voted to secede and Fort Sumter a month away. The Republican “threat” to our democracy, implied Biden, is mortal.“I never thought in my entire career I’d ever…Continue Reading

By JAMES MONTI Recently I had the great privilege of visiting New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, something that as a native New Yorker I should have done many years earlier but never got around to doing until now — Mea culpa! Before going to the museum, I put together a checklist of favorite religious paintings I knew I would want to look for, but there was one that I somehow forgot to put on the list, even though I had known it and loved it for many years. As I was entering one of the galleries and turned around, I suddenly found myself standing before it — Georges de La Tour’s Penitent Magdalene (ca. 1640).The stark simplicity of this…Continue Reading

Cuban-American Bishops . . . State Solidarity With Cuba Protests

July 19, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Cuban-American Bishops . . . State Solidarity With Cuba Protests

DENVER (CNA) — Four Cuban-American bishops issued a statement July 13 indicating their support for Cubans seeking recognition of their human rights, following protests of the island’s Communist government.“We, Cuban-American bishops, join in solidarity with the Cuban people in their quest for responses to their human rights and needs. We are deeply troubled by the aggressive reaction of the government to the peaceful manifestations, recognizing that ‘violence engenders violence’,” read the July 13 statement.“Such a reaction seems to negate the basic Cuban principle of having ‘una patria con todos y para el bien de todos’ (a homeland with all and for the good of all). We stand in solidarity with those detained because they have voiced their opinions.”The statement was…Continue Reading

Communism Is Not The Answer

July 18, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Communism Is Not The Answer

By DONALD DeMARCO Arizona State Rep. Jake Hoffman has stated: “The reality is [that] one of the greatest threats facing the globe today is Communism and totalitarianism.”His words are not mere verbal declarations. Hoffman and his fellow politicians are doing something about these threats. The Republican-majority Arizona House has approved a bill that could require schoolteachers from K through 12 to share stories of people who fled Communism. In addition, public schools would be mandated to teach how Communism and totalitarianism “conflict with the founding principles of the United States.” In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed an executive order on education that exposes the errors of critical race theory and requires students to learn about “the evils of Communism.”The…Continue Reading
