The New Covenant And Corpus Christi

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER The Most Holy Body And Blood Of Christ (YR B) Readings: Exodus 24:3-8Heb. 9:11-15Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 As we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, one would expect that the focus of the readings would be on the Blessed Sacrament. In the Gospel we do have the recounting of the institution of the Holy Eucharist, but the focus of the readings seems to be on the New Covenant made in and through the Blood of our Lord. All three readings specifically mention this point. While this may not appear to be about the Eucharist, it actually is. Jesus is the Covenant and the Eucharist is the Lord. So, in truth, the New Covenant in the Blood of Jesus…Continue Reading

Q. Did Moses write the Book of Genesis? — T.D., via e-mail.A. Moses is regarded as the principal author of the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). However, says Scott Hahn’s Catholic Bible Dictionary, “the longstanding tradition of Moses as the author of Genesis does not insist that he wrote every word of the book. Rather, the essence of Genesis is dated to the time of Moses in the fifteenth century B.C. (or perhaps the thirteenth century B.C.). He would have been responsible for compiling, editing, and organizing assorted family records and archives as well as handing on oral traditions” (p. 307). Q. I heard that at one time there were 40 Stations of…Continue Reading

Marking Twenty Years In The Wanderer

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK Then and now. Then, Fr. Robert D. Smith, and now, this humble scribbler. It was 2001 and, after many years at this space in The Wanderer, the longtime columnist Fr. Smith suddenly took sick and stepped aside, dying by December 2001.I was stationed at the time with the Navy on active duty in Naples, Italy. A friend who had written for the paper helped the editors at The Wanderer to locate me. I had written a piece or two for the paper as early as 1993 and had expressed interest in publishing regularly in these pages, but was informed that the paper limited space for clergy to two columns. But now one of the spaces had opened…Continue Reading

Bishop Wall On Pro-Abort Pols . . . “Our Concern Is Not Political But Pastoral”

May 26, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Bishop Wall On Pro-Abort Pols . . . “Our Concern Is Not Political But Pastoral”

GALLUP, N.M. (CNA) — Bishop James Wall of Gallup responded on May 18 to a recent essay from Bishop Robert McElroy, in which the bishop of San Diego opined that in discussions about whether pro-abortion Catholic politicians should be admitted to Communion, the sacrament is being “weaponized for political ends.”Bishop Wall said that it is a pastoral, rather than political, question.“While I don’t presume to know what’s in the mind and heart of my brother bishops, I am not motivated by political ends, nor are those with whom I have discussed the subject. Our concern is not political but pastoral; it is for the salvation of souls. This issue has political ramifications, but that is not an excuse to shy…Continue Reading

Believe And Rejoice!

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Solemnity Of The Most Holy Trinity (YR B) Readings: Deut. 4:32-34, 39-40Romans 8:14-17Matt. 28:16-20 In the Gospel reading today, our Lord teaches us clearly the truth that there is one God and He is three Persons. Our Lord told His apostles to baptize in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Up to that point, the only Baptism known to anyone was the Baptism of St. John the Baptist. This was a Baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. In essence, it was a preparation for the Baptism our Lord revealed.I say this because the repentance from sin prepared the souls of those who received it to be…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: Due to the pandemic, we were unable to hold weekly classes for 22 tenth-grade Confirmation students. So instead of using our regular text, Catholicism & Life, which covers the Commandments and Sacraments, we prepared a series of 14 lessons on the material, with a summary of each commandment and sacrament along with some questions to answer, and sent them to the students to complete and return to us. To their credit, they did complete the assignment, and we were able to discuss the material with them at a retreat a few weeks before they were confirmed. It occurred to us that this material might be of interest to our readers, so we are passing the lessons along for whatever…Continue Reading

Prophets And The War On God

May 20, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Prophets And The War On God

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK We are living in an unprecedented time in human history.Masses were shut down and churches locked in reaction to the COVID scare. As Robert Moynihan points out in a recent interview with Claire Chretien at LifeSiteNews, “The source of grace was blocked for entire nations” when Masses were discontinued, something which has never occurred before. (See LifeSiteNews.com for Wednesday, May 12, for the full text of the interview.)We are in the midst of wars on several fronts. In addition to traitors inside the Church, a Communist regime in Washington has declared a war on the economy, a war on humanity, and a war on God.A shooting war has broken out in the Holy Land, where…Continue Reading

On Fatima And The Russian Error

May 19, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on On Fatima And The Russian Error

By FR. JAMES ALTMAN Dear family, on this glorious week when we celebrate Ascension Thursday — we do at St. James the Less, because we celebrate it in the Traditional Rite — as well as Our Lady of Fatima, let us begin by invoking the protection of Our Blessed Mother who warned us about the Russian Error. Our Lady of Fatima, ora pro nobis.Dear family, I don’t have to reinvent the wheel and come up with some clever restatement about it all. Fatima.org already did so, and I quote it now:“When Our Lady appeared to the children at Fatima, she gave the fateful warning that if Her requests were not granted, ‘Russia will spread its errors throughout the world, raising…Continue Reading

Reverence For The Dignity Of The Person

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Pentecost Sunday (YR B) Readings: Acts 2:1-11Gal. 5:16-25John 15:26-27, 16:12-15 In the second reading today, St. Paul tells us the Spirit and the flesh are opposed to each other. While this has always been true, it has probably never been more important than it is in our day. A brief overview of art over the centuries shows a fascination with the human body, but our generation has taken this to a level earlier generations would not have thought possible. To be honest, they would have been scandalized if they were shown a glimpse into the future to see what has happened in our times. We have made the body something of a little god, on one hand,…Continue Reading
