A Leaven In The World… Do Not Be Anxious About Anything

April 15, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Do Not Be Anxious About Anything

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK The Easter story told once again in our recent celebration of the Holy Triduum began with God’s “quarantine.” Yes, our Lord spent forty days within the desert and without food or human company during that period. But that was merely the crystallization of the fact that by means of His Incarnation, His taking on our flesh, our Lord quarantined Himself, locked Himself voluntarily by means of His human nature, totally within the reality of our humanity, with all the consequences of our sins including death. God imprisoned Himself within the reign of sin and death to save us. No one outdoes the Lord in His humility and solidarity with us. God died. “In your relationships…Continue Reading

Jesus, I Trust In You!

April 14, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Jesus, I Trust In You!

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Second Sunday Of Easter, Divine Mercy Readings: Acts 2:42-47 1 Peter 1:3-9 John 20:19-31 On the first Easter the apostles locked themselves into a room because they were confused and afraid. This Easter people were locked in their homes, confused and afraid. As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday today, I think it is absolutely paramount that we take to heart the words our Lord Himself asked to have written below His picture: Jesus, I trust in You! The apostles trusted Jesus, sort of. When push came to shove, they put their trust in their own selves and forgot about trusting God. In the panic of our day, it is easy to do the same. Perhaps we…Continue Reading

Bishop Strickland . . . Learning Personal Prayer

April 13, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Bishop Strickland . . . Learning Personal Prayer

By MOST REV. JOSEPH STRICKLAND The large edition of Catechism of the Catholic Church has a splendid Glossary. It contains a short paragraph on personal prayer which reads: Personal Prayer: “The elevation of the mind and heart to God in praise of his glory; a petition made to God for some desired good, or in thanksgiving for a good received, or in intercession for others before God. Through personal prayer the Christian experiences a communion with God through Christ in the Church.” The Glossary refers the reader to the paragraphs within the Catholic Catechism which treat the subject of personal prayer (CCC, nn. 2559-2565). I highly recommend that my readers spend time reading those paragraphs and make sure to look…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Easter: The Power Of God’s Life Over Death

April 8, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Easter: The Power Of God’s Life Over Death

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK During this unprecedented Lent of 2020 we were joined by the whole world in giving up more than we had planned. Some gave up their lives fighting for the well-being of others. Many succumbed to the novel threat, a new plague for which we had no defense, it seemed, but to shut down the economy and keep everyone at home as much as possible. The same doctors who fought HIV but never mentioned behaviors as a way to combat that invisible enemy of human life are now telling us that in this case it is behavior modification that will halt the spread of the virus. I suppose COVID19 is a less political disease because its…Continue Reading

The Miracle Of Easter

April 7, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Miracle Of Easter

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Solemnity Of Easter (YR A) Readings: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Col. 5:6b-8 John 20:1-9 In the Gospel reading we hear about St. John entering the tomb where Jesus had been buried. St. John says of himself that he “saw and believed.” This is followed immediately by the statement that “they did not understand the Scripture that He had to rise from the dead.” Jesus had told His apostles on several occasions that He would rise from the dead, but having no basis of reference from experience, the apostles were not able to understand the meaning of our Lord’s words. The fact that St. John saw and believed is quite remarkable. What he saw was an empty tomb…Continue Reading

Dutch Cardinal . . . Only Orthodox Teaching And Worthy Liturgy Will Attract Catholics

April 6, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Dutch Cardinal . . . Only Orthodox Teaching And Worthy Liturgy Will Attract Catholics

By JEANNE SMITS (LifeSiteNews) — The French-based association for the promotion of the Traditional liturgy of the Latin Church, Paix Liturgique (“Liturgical Peace”), recently published an interview in French with Willem Jacobus Cardinal Eijk, archbishop of Utrecht in the Netherlands regarding the future prospects of the Church in that deeply secularized country. Cardinal Eijk spoke frankly about the decline of Catholic practice in the liberal-minded Netherlands, a fact he linked with ever-growing “individualism” and also with a lack of prayer and truly “lived” faith even before the Second Vatican Council. He also observed that only truly orthodox Church teaching and “worthy” liturgy can attract the faithful, in particular the Traditional liturgy that appeals first and foremost to the young. In…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… A Chance To Strengthen Catholic Identity

April 1, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… A Chance To Strengthen Catholic Identity

By Fr. KEVIN M. CUSICK Never let a crisis go to waste. This is true for cynical politicians and unscrupulous business types. Should it be true for the Church as well? I think so. Weeks ago, dioceses nearly worldwide, in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, have ordered public Masses canceled. Bishops have stipulated that these not be replaced by Communion services which will also draw a gathering. Priests were often told what not to do and left scrambling to figure out what to do. They should certainly continue to offer Mass privately, and for the intentions and needs of their people. But priests are fathers, left mired in frustration if they think they are not doing enough to care…Continue Reading

The Meekness And Humility Of The Lord

March 31, 2020 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Meekness And Humility Of The Lord

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Palm Sunday (YR A) Readings: Matt. 21:1-11 Isaiah 50:4-7 Phil. 2:6-11 Matt. 26:14-27:66 Today we remember the remarkable change of perspective that took place among the people between the time Jesus came into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and the attitude of the people only five days later as they called for our Lord’s crucifixion. However, in the midst of those changing winds of opinion, what we find is that our Lord’s disposition remained the same. In the first Gospel today, we hear the people crying out “Hosanna to the Son of David. Hosanna in the highest.” We often hear this referred to as the “Triumphal entry into Jerusalem.” However, when we look at what St. Matthew…Continue Reading
