Archbishop Henryk Hoser: “The Church has betrayed John Paul II…they did not follow his voice

February 6, 2015 World News Comments Off on Archbishop Henryk Hoser: “The Church has betrayed John Paul II…they did not follow his voice

Today’s Niedziela, from Poland, carries an interview with Archbishop Henryk Hoser of Warsaw-Praga, about the recent acts of treachery against Our Lord, His Church and our recently sainted Pope, St. Pope John Paul II. These acts of treachery were committed by an assortment of innovators at last October’s Synod of the Family. These innovators have not been idle, and neither have the defenders of the truth about the sanctity of holy matrimony. I predicted to a friend recently that the upcoming Synod will be an ugly confrontation, that (for example) the Polish Episcopate will never surrender to the innovators. We now have conclusive evidence that this is true. When an archbishop has to publicly proclaim that a canonized sai

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone Spells Out Schools’ Sex Doctrine

February 6, 2015 World News Comments Off on Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone Spells Out Schools’ Sex Doctrine

The conservative Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco has developed a new document for Catholic high school faculty and staff clarifying that sex outside of marriage, homosexual relations, the viewing of pornography and masturbation are “gravely evil.” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone’s document applies to faculty and staff at four Catholic high schools: Riordan and Sacred Heart in San Francisco, Marin Catholic in Kentfield and Serra High School in San Mateo. It states that administrators, faculty and staff “affirm and believe” the controversial statements, which will be part of the faculty handbook. The document goes on to say that marriage is between “one man and one woman,” despite California law allowing same-sex marriages. It also notes that sperm donation, th

It will be his first visit to…Continue Reading

Pope Francis: The Push To Synodality

February 3, 2015 World News Comments Off on Pope Francis: The Push To Synodality

Everything for the sake of synodality. This seems to be Pope Francis’ governing program. The Pope has already made it clear that he deems the conversion of hearts to be more important than the conversion of structures. He carefully considers every step to further expand the footprint of synodality,  a wider sense of discussion within the Church. His basic idea is that of a dialogical Church going out of itself, a Church that is open and present among people. Coupled with his conviction that the poor evangelize is Pope Francis’ understanding of the Church of the peripheries as the way to evangelize and purify Rome, which he considers too self-referential. His latest move in this direction is a modification of…Continue Reading

Super Bowl And The Mass

February 2, 2015 World News Comments Off on Super Bowl And The Mass

I write to you in the midst of a semi-“religious” event: the Super Bowl. People have donned their sacred attire and are shouting praises. I enjoy football, but see it a lot less than most since I’m a priest and tend to be busy on Sundays! Yet I remain quite fascinated at how passionate and dedicated many Americans are to their team and to the game.

New Congressional Bill Declares Homosexual Love as a Basic Human Right

January 31, 2015 World News Comments Off on New Congressional Bill Declares Homosexual Love as a Basic Human Right

U.S. lawmakers in both houses of Congress introduced on Thursday a bill to protect and promote the rights of the international lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The International Human Rights Defense Act, spearheaded by Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Rep. Alan Lowenthal of California, both Democrats, would appoint a special envoy within the U.S. Department of State to coordinate efforts to prevent discrimination and advance the rights of LGBT people worldwide. “When President Obama addressed the nation and committed to defending the human rights of the LGBT com

STUDENTS AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OFFERED CREDIT THROUGH INTERNSHIP AT NOW

SAINT PAUL, MN. – Administrators at the University of St. Thomas, a private Catholic liberal arts school, are standing firm behind their controversial decision to allow students to gain academic credit by interning at the Minnesota-based NOW chapter. Doug Hennes, vice president for university and government relations, told The College Fix in an email that administrators view the National Organization for Women as “an advocacy group on a wide variety of women’s issues, not specifically on abortion.” Minnesota NOW, though a diverse political advocate, is a leading supporter of abortion activism in Minnesota. NOW has been rallying behind reproductive rights since 1971 and “fully supports access to safe and legal abortion,” states the organization’s webpage. The group is also an active promoter of LGBT

S.F. Catholic Church priest bans girls as altar servers

January 30, 2015 World News Comments Off on S.F. Catholic Church priest bans girls as altar servers

A Catholic priest, new to San Francisco and no stranger to controversy, has banned girls from acting as altar servers at Mass, a decision that sets his parish apart from all others in the archdiocese. The Rev. Joseph Illo, pastor at Star of the Sea Church since August, said he believes there is an “intrinsic connection” between the priesthood and serving at the altar — and because women can’t be priests, it makes sense to have only altar boys. “Maybe the most important thing is that it prepares boys to consider the priesthood,” he said. The Richmond District parish is now the only one in the Archdiocese of San Francisco that will exclude girls from serving at the altar. Such…Continue Reading

Notre Dame theologian known for books, liberal stands, dies

January 26, 2015 World News Comments Off on Notre Dame theologian known for books, liberal stands, dies

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The Rev. Richard McBrien, a University of Notre Dame theologian known for his unabashed liberal stands on various church teachings and his popular books on Catholicism, died Sunday in his native Connecticut, according to the school. He was 78. The often-quoted theology professor, who for nearly 50 years penned a weekly column for Catholic newspapers, courted controversy with his criticism of Pope John Paul II’s emphasis on orthodoxy, and he advocated for change. McBrien also spoke out in favor of artificial contraception, the ordination of female priests and optional celibacy for priests.

Bankruptcy case brings financial fears for Catholic schools

January 26, 2015 World News Comments Off on Bankruptcy case brings financial fears for Catholic schools

As president of an inner-city Catholic grade school that depends critically on donations, Helen Dahlman admits to an unconventional fundraising strategy. “We believe in miracles, so we pray a lot,” said Dahlman, who leads Risen Christ School in south Minneapolis, a place devoted to poor immigrants and other severely disadvantaged kids. Risen Christ is among dozens of Catholic schools across the Twin Cities watching how the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis shoulders millions of dollars of anticipated debt from clergy sexual abuse lawsuits. And as the church’s bankruptcy case unfolds, they are keeping the faith that it won’t have ripple effects on their finances.
