The recent assault on Archbishop Chaput is a taste of what awaits many others.

No small part of the extraordinary success of the pro–“gay marriage” movement has been its ability to sell the idea that this really is No Big Deal. Same-sex-attracted men and women, the claim goes, simply want what other people want — stable, loving relationships, in which responsibility is assumed for those for whom we care. When the state recognizes that, all will be well, calm will prevail, and we can all get on with our lives. It’s a culturally powerful argument, especially when wrapped in the mantle of the classic civil-rights movement, and the polling numbers suggest that a lot of people who couldn’t have imagined “same-sex marriage” even five years ago have been persuaded. Yet the notion that agitations…Continue Reading

Catholic university president deletes tweet celebrating gay ‘marriage’

July 18, 2015 World News Comments Off on Catholic university president deletes tweet celebrating gay ‘marriage’

July 17, 2015 (CardinalNewmanSociety) — The Jesuit president of the University of San Francisco (USF) has removed the University’s controversial social media post celebrating the Supreme Court’s marriage ruling last month, and he assured The Cardinal Newman Society that USF supports Catholic teaching on marriage—a position, however, that contradicts a long history of LGBT activism at USF that has included advocacy for same-sex marriage and honors for its leading proponents. On Friday, June 26—the same day as the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges—the University of San Francisco sent out a message celebrating the decision, as previously reported by the Newman Society. The tweet, which was originally distributed by the University’s Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common…Continue Reading

Mass exodus continues from German Catholic Church

July 18, 2015 World News Comments Off on Mass exodus continues from German Catholic Church

More than 200,000 Germans formally left the Catholic Church in 2014, accelerating the downward trend in the Catholic proportion of the country’s population. Germans who are officially enrolled in congregation are subject to a “church tax,” and so disaffected Catholics have an incentive to drop their registration, rather than simply stop attending Mass. The number of Catholics taking that step has increased sharply in recent years. In 2013, 178,805 Catholics formally dropped off the parish rolls in Germany. In 2014 that figure jumped by 22%, to 217,716, according to official statistic released by the German bishops’ conference.

Baby Parts Video . . . The problem is the producers not the video’s contents: One Jesuit’s “critical” review of the unedited footage…

Over at America magazine, the Reverend Sam Sawyer, SJ posted a blog, titled “Outrage over Planned Parenthood Video: A Review of the Unedited Footage.” In his initial post, Fr. Sawyer–who claims himself to be aligned with the pro-life cause but not some of its tactics–diverted attention away from what Dr. Deborah Nucatola of Planned Parenthood admitted in the video to be doing in her medical practice. Instead, Fr. Sawyer focused upon the folks who produced the video, the Center for Medical Progress (CPM), arguing that they selectively edited the full, unedited undercover video. That editing, Fr. Sawyer asserted, was “by any fair standard, wildly misleading

ROME, July 17, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) — On July 15, the German, Swiss and French Bishops’ Conferences finally published the documents from their much-criticized “Shadow Council” of May 15 at the Gregorian University in Rome. As the German Branch of Vatican Radio reports, the documentation is now available in German, Italian, and French and it contains six presentations about: The words of Jesus concerning marriage and divorce – and reflections on a Catholic Hermeneutic of the Bible Sexuality as an expression of love – reflections on a theology of love The gift of one’s own life, and reflections as a contribution to a theology of biography The president of the German Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, explained in his recent pr

Five states now investigating Planned Parenthood organ trafficking allegations

July 17, 2015 World News Comments Off on Five states now investigating Planned Parenthood organ trafficking allegations

AUSTIN, TX, July 16, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) – After the 2012 election, Planned Parenthood believed its future was assured. Its half-billion dollar annual subsidy from U.S. taxpayers had been protected by accusing anyone who threatened it of waging a “war on women.” This week, following a 30-month-long investigation by the Center for Medical Progress, the nation’s largest abortion provider is under investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives and five states: Louisiana, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, and Indiana. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced the investigation – and the fact that he is holding up the organization’s construction of an 8,000 square foot abortion megafacility in New Orleans – shortly after the video discussing the sale of unborn children’s body parts surfaced.

RUSH:  This is Mary in Ridgefield, Connecticut.  I’m glad you called, and thank you for your patience.  Hi. CALLER:  Hi, Rush.  Thanks for taking my call.  First of all, I want to thank you for speaking the truth with such great humor.  I really do appreciate it.  Hey, I’ve been trying to get through to you for a while and it’s always about the same thing, the Catholic Church, the Catholic hierarchy and your response to certain issues. And today was another example where I think you’re almost more Catholic than some of the Catholic priests I know, and I know I have to tone that down a bit and say maybe braver than a lot of Catholic priests I…Continue Reading

Pope calls ‘communist crucifix’ protest art, but says he wasn’t offended

July 15, 2015 World News Comments Off on Pope calls ‘communist crucifix’ protest art, but says he wasn’t offended

Responding to waves of controversy after receiving a “communist crucifix” – a carving of Christ crucified on a hammer and sickle – from Bolivian president Evo Morales, Pope Francis said he took no offense, but understands the work as “protest art.” “I would qualify it as protest art, which in some cases can be offensive,” the Pope said during an inflight news conference on his July 12 overnight flight from Paraguay to Rome. But given the context of this piece of art, he added that he understands the idea behind the crucifix, and “for me it wasn’t an offense.”

Tim Tebow Calls on Christians to Stand Up for Christian Values in America

July 14, 2015 World News Comments Off on Tim Tebow Calls on Christians to Stand Up for Christian Values in America

At a recent event in Tennessee, Tim Tebow said that Christians need to stand up for Judeo-Christian values in America. He said, “What’s amazing when you get up and do something is what God does in your life. We just have to get up and do something. When your identity is found in Christ, your identity never changes. You are always a child of God. That’s why I always say I don’t have to live the roller coaster that the rest of the world lives …” As LifeNews previously reported, Tebow is a popular football quarterback who became a pro-life star when he shared how his mother Pam rejected abortion after

Catholic families: strong on prayer, weak on sacraments

July 12, 2015 World News Comments Off on Catholic families: strong on prayer, weak on sacraments

(RNS) Most of today’s American Catholic parents don’t go to Mass, provide any Catholic education for their children or stress the basic sacraments beyond baptism. And yet a new study of these families finds good news: “They still have a relationship with God and pray for their family,” said a co-author of the research, Mark Gray at the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. This heartens Susan Wallace, marketing director for the Holy Cross Family Ministries, the organization behind the famous slogan, “The family that prays together stays together.” It commissioned the research in advance of Pope Francis’ September visit to the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia and the Vatican’s October meeting to conclude the church’s Synod of Bishops on…Continue Reading
