Biden Pushing Abortion
By BARBARA SIMPSON
We are just weeks away from the primary election and judging by the headlines out of Washington, Democrats are starting to run scared that they may not get the win they need for control of Congress.
Politicians from almost every state are being interviewed and are speaking out for their point of view. Many, if not most, are taking aim at Donald Trump, who — at this point — hasn’t even declared a candidacy. He says he is thinking about it!
The man who is taking the most heat for his political positions is the president, Joe Biden. That, in itself, isn’t surprising. The “President,” at any given time and of any given party, is always the main target during an election. In our situation, that man is Joseph Biden, and he is taking heat for the domestic economic and international problems that we face during this tense period. Keep in mind, many are talking about the possibility of World War III!
Domestically, Biden has boasted of what he claims is a “up economy,” but the reality is that we are in the middle of record inflation with much worse being predicted. It all presents real economic challenges for the average family and certainly for politicians who hope to be elected.
With all that we face, it came as a surprise to many when Biden announced the past week that he plans to use abortion as his rallying point for the election! In fact, President Biden announced he hopes to mobilize his supporters by promising to sign a law to codify abortion rights in January, if — and that’s a big IF — Democrats win enough votes in the election.
Speaking in Washington, he said: “Here is the promise I make to you and the American people: The first bill that I will send to the Congress will be to codify Roe v. Wade.”
His goal is to ensure the right to abortion beyond the reach of the courts.
It’s hard to say what effect this will have on average Americans, regardless of how they feel about abortion. Whether it will gain Democrats more votes is a matter of conjecture. Those votes will determine whether Democrats gain control of Congress in the election.
Political experts say it will be a tough battle. They have only a slim majority in the House now and control the 50-50 Senate, only because Vice President Kamala Harris can cast tie-breaking votes.
Aside from that, the real issue is whether the issue of abortion is that important to a majority of American voters.
Another gambit the administration is trying is to use the military to support abortions and have taxpayers pay for them.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin last week announced a new policy under which the Pentagon will pay for travel for troops and their dependents who want abortions but may be based in a state where it is illegal.
This new policy has guidelines that ensure local commanders cannot influence the decisions of service members in such situations.
Apparently, this has been an issue of concern for the Pentagon which has thought that the Supreme Court abortion decision would affect recruitment and retention of service members. It was thought that recruits might be worried about being assigned to states where there are anti-abortion laws. Since there are bases in anti-abortion states, it was thought that people would not re-up or even join, because of that.
This new policy to cover travel expenses for abortions, relieves military members of that concern should they desire the procedure.
It also ensures that they will be given privacy protections for their decisions.
At this point, there are no published figures to show what this might cost taxpayers — time will tell. Secretary Austin has ordered that the new policy be put into effect by the end of this year.
One aspect in all of this that has gotten no media attention that I have seen has to do with religion. Joseph Biden says he is a good, practicing Roman Catholic. He claims to go to church regularly and receives Holy Communion. To receive the Eucharist, a Catholic in good standing needs to have gone to Confession and not be in a state of mortal sin.
How does Biden’s promotion of abortion fit in with that? It seems to me that his doing this is, in itself, sinful and yet there he is. He is announcing it in the news, yet exceedingly few religious figures — priest, bishop, or cardinal have spoken out against what he is proposing.
It seems to me that the Church needs to respond to an ostensible “good Catholic” politician making it easy for women to get abortions on demand — whenever and wherever — at taxpayer expense.
I know, there will be those who will disagree with me, but it seems this is just another blatant example of Catholic “rules and guidelines” being watered down to the point where they are almost meaningless. It’s sad.
