Democrats Declare Perpetual War For Perpetual Abortion
By CHRISTOHER MANION
The recent publication of a stolen Supreme Court draft opinion has received widespread attention.
Chief Justice John Roberts has confirmed the text’s veracity as the opinion on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization drafted by Justice Samuel Alito for the majority. That revelation has boosted the spirits of millions who have worked and prayed for half a century to send Roe v. Wade to the dustbin of history.
The Left, however, is not pleased.
For years, pro-abortion elites have endeavored to make abortion on demand America’s new Mount Rushmore. Their target has always been the most helpless. Ever since Margaret Sanger waged war against “blacks and browns” a hundred years ago, they have lived by the slogan pinned on them permanently by P.J. O’Rourke: “There are just enough of me, but waaay too many of you.”
In 1793, Robespierre’s revolutionaries worshipped the “Goddess of Reason” as the symbol of the atheistic cult that would replace the Catholic Church. To encourage compliance, he erected over a thousand guillotines all over France.
Today’s Left demands thousands of abortion mills throughout America, and the “SCOTUS Steal” is simply one more proof that they will do anything — lie, cheat, hijack, kill, to preserve their Prime Mandate, the right to kill the most innocent.
Even before 1973, the pro-life movement has sought to protect the unborn through means established by the Constitution and respected by the culture
For instance, on May 3, 1972, Cong. John Schmitz (R., Calif.) introduced House Joint Resolution 1186, with the following text:
“Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to ensure that due process and equal protection are afforded to an individual from the moment that he is conceived.
“An individual, from the moment that he is conceived, shall not be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. No state shall deprive any individual, from the moment that he is conceived, of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any individual, from the moment that he is conceived, within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
Was it mere coincidence that Schmitz’s proposed amendment was proposed just five weeks after the Rockefeller Commission’s “Report on Population and the American Future” appeared?
As we reported last month, the Commission’s report, calling for a massive and worldwide campaign of population control, had broad bipartisan support. Clearly, those forces were at work long before Roe v. Wade. They have continued ever since.
Laboring In The Vineyard
Pro-lifers fighting to reverse Roe have followed Cong. Schmitz’s lead, working “within the system” — through legislative efforts, filing court cases, and engaging in reasoned argument and persuasive research.
One might allege that the pro-abortion Left followed the same rules — “respecting” the Court’s opinions since Roe.
But that façade lasted only so long as the Court confirmed the flimsy foundation of the Left’s killer instinct. Flip that “foundation” on its head, and their rage knows no bounds.
With the “SCOTUS Steal,” the pro-abortion Left has now proven that it will follow the maxim of Karl Marx’s Eleventh Thesis on Feuerbach — destroy by any means available everything that stands in the way of their ultimate power lust.
And, count on it, “The Steal” will now serve as a “super-precedent” for more crimes to come. The Rule of Law has been defied — and will now be attacked.
And why not? The Left has taken due note of bipartisan predictions of a sweeping “Red Wave” in November. Now, to be sure, these predictions were premature and, frankly, immature. But assume they’re correct: What does the Left have to lose?
We now know that they will do anything to win.
As Nancy Pelosi recently put it, “Forget history. We’re talking about future.”
Action Items For Your Diocese!
“In preparation for the 2023 Synod of Bishops in Rome, Pope Francis has asked every local church to undertake their [sic] own synodal phase of prayerful listening and dialogue and discernment on how the Church is journeying together and fulfilling our mission in the world,” our parish bulletin announced.
Two weeks ago, His Excellency Michael Burbidge, bishop of Arlington, came to our parish for an evening of “of prayerful listening and dialogue.”
“Unfortunately,” I wrote Fr. Donald Planty, who accompanied him, “my desire to attend tonight’s session has been sidelined. One of our Jail Ministry volunteers got sick so I have to be at RSW Jail at 7:00 p.m . . . In my absence, I request that you convey to His Excellency one pressing issue:
“U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly is a strident and effective pro-abortion advocate on Capitol Hill and in the Arlington Diocese.
“Mr. Connolly’s self-identification as a ‘practicing Catholic in good standing’ is a scandal to Holy Mother Church and to the Arlington faithful, as well as the public at large.
“Maybe Bishop Burbidge can do nothing about ‘Catholic Joe’ Biden, but Canon 915 requires him to act regarding Mr. Connolly’s ‘obstinate persistence in manifest grave sin.’
“Please convey to His Excellency my respectful and prayerful request that he publicly address this scandal.”
I later forwarded my question to Bishop Burbidge at the chancery, but he has not yet been able to respond.
My Diocesan Action Plan
No sooner did I get home than I heard from Jeff Caruso, who directs the Richmond office of the Virginia Catholic Conference. Upon reading his report of his recent activities, I responded with the memo below:
Dear Mr. Caruso:
Drawing on my sixty years of experience, I offer these recommendations for your personal action items formulated in order to advance our common priority — the pro-life, pro-family message of Holy Mother Church and Humanae Vitae.
- Use your organizing abilities and political acumen to stage weekly demonstrations in front of both the Arlington and the Richmond chanceries demanding that our beloved bishops Act Now! regarding the abortion issue.
- Suggested themes of chants and signs:
— “Your Excellency, please publicly condemn the pro-abortion record of ‘Catholic’ a) “Senator Tim Kaine” (for Richmond demonstration, addressed to HE Bishop Knestout); b) “Representative Gerry Connolly” (for Arlington, addressed to HE Bishop Burbidge).”
— “Your Excellency, please call on all Catholics to condemn all pro-abortion politicians!”
“Your Excellency, please urge all Catholics to remember your (and our!) ‘Pre-Eminent Issue of Abortion’ that you affirmed at your USCCB Meeting in November 2019.” - Action
— Work with your parish-level contacts. You have it broken down by deanery, right? Get those folks together now to work on signs, recruitment, education, and activation of their respective faithful. Appoint regional coordinators by deanery, who will report back to you or your designated staff member in charge of oversight of the operation.
— Use your extensive media list to inform all journalists — local, Commonwealth, and national — of these demonstrations. We had journalists of all three levels cover our events in the Arlington Diocese when we were fighting the “Bad Touch” sex-education program (which was subsequently withdrawn) some twenty years ago.
— Plan weekly demonstrations through the last Friday before the election — the crowd will grow as excitement mounts each week with your experienced guidance.
— Do interviews nationwide, since this will make national news if you do it right — and I know you will.
Note: You might think it unwise to “get out ahead of” your bishop bosses.
Far from it!
You’ll be giving them the opportunity to show that they’ve truly listened to the faithful at the listening sessions held in each parish this year! Our bishops won’t feel like they’re going “out on a limb” by following Canon Law, they’ll be able to point to your good work at assembling hundreds, and then thousands, of Catholics and to tell the hostile media, “the People of God are demanding that I speak, I must respond!”
Ora et labora…et labora, et labora!
Oremus pro invicem and Blessings of Easter!
Kind regards.
- + + Mr. Caruso’s response, which came the next day, in full:
“Dear Dr. Manion, I acknowledge receipt of your email.”
