The Face of God Was Seen That Day
By ROBERT N. BORGHESE
A veil separates the face of God
From our world of flesh.
Is it ever breached?
The mystic said the most sublime act
Sets another before you.
Unconditional human love reflects the face of God;
And God is love.
When Jesus said there is no greater love
Than to lay down your life for a friend,
The face of God was seen that day.
The Commandant said that ten would die
In place of one that had escaped;
But one had a family and was distraught.
Father Kolbe said in answer to the evil option
Take me for I a family naught
For what God has joined together
None can separate.
That day ten did walk
Through the gates of hell into paradise.
The face of God was seen that day.
Gianna Molla had a mother’s love so strong
For the weak dividing cells inside
That when a choice was made
She hesitated not,
To save the child.
The face of God was seen that day.
At Mass that day there was no seat
Save one circle around a child avoided.
Special needs had he.
But his mother was there
Like Mary at the cross
Forever loving unconditionally.
The others came that day to seek Jesus
But saw Him not
For He was in one of His many disguises.
But for those with eyes to see
The face of God was seen that day.
The outcast on the dirty mat looked up
Squinting into the first light
Of the dusty Calcutta dawn
And saw the outline of an angel in a white sari
With the rays of the rising sun behind her.
Can this be?
Can an angel be coming?
To touch the untouchable?
The face of God was seen that day.
Thy kingdom come!
On earth as it is in heaven.
