Collective Achievement… Reconstruction And Notre Dame

June 25, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Collective Achievement… Reconstruction And Notre Dame

By JUDE DOUGHERTY “A Gothic cathedral is a collective achievement, the outcome of countless craftsmen working across the centuries toward a common goal. It is not the arena for idiosyncratic personal expression,” so wrote Michael J. Lewis in a timely essay. (1) Something similar may be said of an intellectual tradition that was being formed at the same time the European cathedrals were coming into being. Our subject is the formation of Western culture, the intellectual tools and the social conditions which contributed to its being. Stephen Gaukroger provides this insight. Like those great cathedrals, “Modern science is the outcome of a distinctive culture long in the making, a culture whose history begins in classical antiquity.” (2) Specifically, what needs…Continue Reading

Memo To Youth Ministers… Stop Preaching Self-Esteem

June 24, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Memo To Youth Ministers… Stop Preaching Self-Esteem

By ARTHUR HIPPLER (Editor’s Note: Dr. Hippler is chairman of the religion department and teaches religion in the Upper School at Providence Academy, Plymouth, Minn.) + + + Many forms of outreach to Catholic young people want to get them fired up about the faith. They give an example of enthusiasm by which they hope to inspire others. But I will often hear young people say after such an experience, “I keep hearing that ‘Jesus loves me’. What do I do now?” Youth ministers are not of course alone in this — many pastors (who really should know better) use the same approach. Students do not just need affirmation. They need specific forms of direction in their moral life and…Continue Reading

Why Moral Values Are Disappearing

June 23, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Why Moral Values Are Disappearing

By DONALD DeMARCO Benjamin Franklin, among his numerous contributions to civilization, bequeathed to the world a stream of deathless aphorisms: A penny saved is a penny earned; time lost is never found again; nothing is certain save death and taxes; there was never a good war, or a bad peace; honesty is the best policy. And if so many of his aphorisms are nothing but platitudes, he redeems himself by stating, “Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every New Year find you a better man.” My favorite of his timeless proverbs, for purely philosophical reasons, is his statement that there is “A place for everything, everything in its place.” It is a practical…Continue Reading

War With Iran Would Become “Trump’s War”

June 22, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on War With Iran Would Become “Trump’s War”

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN President Donald Trump cannot want war with Iran. Such a war, no matter how long, would be fought in and around the Persian Gulf, through which a third of the world’s seaborne oil travels. It could trigger a worldwide recession and imperil Trump’s reelection. It would widen the “forever war,” which Trump said he would end, to a nation of 80 million people, three times as large as Iraq. It would become the defining issue of his presidency, as the Iraq War became the defining issue of George W. Bush’s presidency. And if war comes now, it would be known as “Trump’s War.” For it was Trump who pulled us out of the Iran nuclear deal,…Continue Reading

U.S. Supreme Court . . . Reverses Oregon’s Decision To Punish Bakers

June 21, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on U.S. Supreme Court . . . Reverses Oregon’s Decision To Punish Bakers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a victory for Sweet Cakes Bakery and Melissa and Aaron Klein, on June 17 the U.S. Supreme Court sent their case back to the Oregon Court of Appeals in light of the June 2018 decision in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. Sweet Cakes by Melissa v. Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries involves bakers Melissa and Aaron Klein, who paid a $135,000 judgment to a same-sex couple for declining to create a cake for them in 2013. The Kleins were forced to shut down their bakery in the city of Gresham because of the conflict over their religious beliefs. The Supreme Court’s brief order directs the Oregon Court of Appeals to consider its 2018 ruling in Masterpiece…Continue Reading

Where Did The Zombie Apocalypse Come From?

June 20, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Where Did The Zombie Apocalypse Come From?

By ARTHUR HIPPLER (Editor’s Note: Dr. Hippler is chairman of the religion department and teaches religion in the Upper School at Providence Academy, Plymouth, Minn.) + + + Am I the only one who has noticed the proliferation of movies and television shows about zombies? Casual browsing on Netflix reveals not only the longtime series Walking Dead (nine seasons) and Z Nation (three seasons) but also the new series Black Summer and The Kingdom (the latter from South Korea). There continues to be a steady stream of new movies as well. Why have zombie movies replaced the earlier staples of werewolves, vampires, and ghosts? The first point to notice is the way in which zombies have changed from their origin…Continue Reading

God’s In Charge

By Fr. MICHAEL P. ORSI (Editor’s Note: A priest of the Diocese of Camden, N.J., Fr. Michael P. Orsi currently serves as parochial vicar at St. Agnes Parish in Naples, Fla. He is host of Action for Life TV, a weekly cable television series devoted to pro-life issues, and his writings appear in numerous publications and online journals.) + + + From time to time I get to preach on a Gospel reading that demonstrates how the Bible is truly trans-historical — not limited by time or place. The Gospel for Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, John 14:23-29, was such a reading. Its central point is as relevant today as when the apostle first recorded his thoughts, sometime back in…Continue Reading

Floral Artist… Heads Back To U.S. Supreme Court To Protect Her Freedom

June 17, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Floral Artist… Heads Back To U.S. Supreme Court To Protect Her Freedom

OLYMPIA — Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing floral artist Barronelle Stutzman of Arlene’s Flowers in Richland will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to take her case after the Washington Supreme Court ruled against her on June 6. The U.S. Supreme Court vacated the state High Court’s previous ruling against Stutzman and ordered it to reconsider her case in light of the Masterpiece Cakeshop decision. Without even holding an oral argument, the state court came back with the same result, repeating verbatim much of what it said in its original decision rather than reconsidering the case as the U.S. Supreme Court directed. “Barronelle serves all customers; she simply declines to celebrate or participate in sacred events that violate her deeply held…Continue Reading

Canada And The Erosion Of Conscience

June 16, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Canada And The Erosion Of Conscience

By DONALD DeMARCO Pro-abortionists have consistently argued that a woman should have the freedom to follow her conscience. Granted that this notion of conscience is incomplete since it may not be properly formed, nonetheless it gave pro-life people the assurance that this right to one’s conscience would protect doctors who are opposed to abortion from being compelled to participate in abortion. Unfortunately, in Canada, the tide has turned. The freedom of conscience that justified abortion, as well as euthanasia, no longer extends to doctors who oppose these practices. On May 15, 2019, and by a unanimous decision, Ontario’s highest court ruled that religious doctors must offer patients an “effective referral” for abortion, medical-assistance in dying, and other contentious “health” services.…Continue Reading
