California Confessional Bill Withdrawn… Thanks To All For A Smashing Victory

July 15, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on California Confessional Bill Withdrawn… Thanks To All For A Smashing Victory

By BILL DONOHUE (Editor’s Note: Catholic League President Bill Donohue commented July 9 on the final outcome of the California confessional bill.) + + + The seal of Confession is safe in California. The bill to bust it has been pulled. Yesterday, [July 8] on the eve of a scheduled hearing on SB 360, California State Sen. Jerry Hill withdrew his bill; it would have broken the seal of the confessional in some instances. He pulled his legislation once he realized he didn’t have enough votes to make it out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee. The effort to stop the bill was led by Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez. The Catholic League played an ancillary role, mobilizing tens of…Continue Reading

Looking For Light In A World Of Shadows

July 14, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Looking For Light In A World Of Shadows

By DONALD DeMARCO Nothing is random in the light of eternity and when viewed in this way, everything makes sense. To God, there are no accidents. Even forgetfulness can be an occasion of grace, a moment when we find light in a darkened world. There were distractions that might have made my forgetfulness explainable that morning. But there I was, standing in front of the counter of a fast-food restaurant and suddenly making the embarrassing discovery that I had forgotten my wallet. I asked the attendant if I could provide an IOU. She smiled and told me that her establishment had no policy for such a thing. Her sympathetic manner suggested that if she were in charge there would be…Continue Reading

Trump’s Patriotism Vs. The New Anti-Americanism

July 13, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Trump’s Patriotism Vs. The New Anti-Americanism

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Despite all the grousing and griping about his “politicizing” of the Fourth of July and “militarizing” America’s birthday, President Donald Trump turned the tables on his antagonists, and pulled it off. As master of ceremonies and keynote speaker at his “Salute to America” Independence Day event, Trump was a manifest success. A president acting as president is almost always a more effective campaigner than a president acting as campaigner. And Trump, in what he said and did not say, played the president Thursday night, July 4. The crowd on the Mall was huge and friendly, extending from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument. The TV coverage was excellent. Friday, virtually every major newspaper had front-page…Continue Reading

Analysis . . . New Vatican Constitution To Centralize Power In State Secretariat

July 12, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Analysis . . . New Vatican Constitution To Centralize Power In State Secretariat

By ED CONDON VATICAN CITY (CNA) — At the end of June, Bishop Marcello Semeraro, secretary of the Pope’s C6 Council of Cardinal Advisers, announced that the group hoped to present Francis with a final draft of a new Vatican constitution in September. Praedicate Evangelium, as the new governing document for the Roman Curia is to be called, completes the reforming work already begun of combining various smaller Vatican departments into a more streamlined structure. Focus on the forthcoming changes has largely fixed on the perception that a reformed and enlarged Dicastery for Evangelization will be “ranked above” the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the change said to imply a shift in priorities for the universal Church.…Continue Reading

The Schismatic Spirit of Catholic Education… Liberalism And The Crisis Of Catholicism

July 11, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on The Schismatic Spirit of Catholic Education… Liberalism And The Crisis Of Catholicism

By PAUL KRAUSE (Editor’s Note: Paul Krause in 2018 wrote an article for The Wanderer entitled: “Liberalism and the Crisis of Catholicism.” He is a senior contributor to The Imaginative Conservative. (The document Male and Female He Created Them that Krause refers to in the first paragraph of the article below was issued June 10 by the Congregation for Catholic Education. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is expected to publish a more in-depth theological and anthropological text than the guide published by the Education Congregation.) + + + Schism is defined as willful refusal to submit to the Roman Pontiff and those who are in communion with him. This does not, of course, mean that the Holy…Continue Reading

A Founding Father Who Was Wrong — Then Right

July 10, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on A Founding Father Who Was Wrong — Then Right

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY (Editor’s Note: Terence P. Jeffrey is the editor-in-chief of CNSnews.com. Creators Syndicate distributes his column. All rights reserved.) + + + All American politicians of the founding era share one thing in common with those of the current: Like all human beings, they are imperfect. Rev. John Witherspoon, who signed the Declaration of Independence, uniquely expressed his own imperfection in his intolerance for the dramatic arts. Born and raised in Scotland and educated at the University of Edinburgh, Witherspoon served for 23 years as a Church of Scotland minister in Beith and then in Paisley. In 1755, when at Beith, a fellow clergyman wrote a play that was produced in Edinburgh. “In Witherspoon’s opinion,” wrote biographer…Continue Reading

Vincent Lambert… Doctors To Remove Nutrition From Disabled Frenchman

July 9, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Vincent Lambert… Doctors To Remove Nutrition From Disabled Frenchman

REIMS, France (CNA) — Doctors have said they will begin to remove intravenous feeding tubes from Vincent Lambert, though his parents have asked international authorities to intervene to avoid the death of the man, who requires artificial life support due to a severe injury. “Vincent is not at the end of his life, he is not a vegetable,” his mother Viviane Lambert asked the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva July 1, Radio France International reports. “I beg you, help us,” she said. “Without your intervention, my son, Vincent Lambert, will be euthanized because of his mental handicap.” She said it would be discriminatory to deprive a disabled person of food and drink. “He sleeps at night, wakes up during…Continue Reading

The Months Of Mary… The Immaculate Conception

July 8, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on The Months Of Mary… The Immaculate Conception

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY This is the second in a series of articles on our Lady in connection with some of the themes found in the Fatima message and some of her other major apparitions. As indicated in the last article, the Blessed Virgin and the Child Jesus appeared to Sr. Lucia, at Pontevedra in Spain, in 1925, when she spoke in more detail about the Five First Saturdays devotion of reparation. Then in May 1930, when Sr. Lucia was praying before the Blessed Sacrament, she received an interior locution — an inner revelation from God — which explained why it was necessary to have the Communion of reparation on five Saturdays. She understood the reason for this was that…Continue Reading

A Lecture To Students Of Criminal Law

July 7, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on A Lecture To Students Of Criminal Law

By DONALD DeMARCO I did not deliver the following lecture, though I have given talks to law students. The following is based on a rather vivid dream I had. The essential idea in the dream seemed to have sufficient merit to be transcribed into a written article: Good morning! I am most honored and pleased to have the opportunity to speak to you and I address you as future lawyers, judges, at the delta in New Orleans, a mighty waterway. Small beginnings can produce stupendous results. Now I ask, what is the seed, the humble beginning from which the gigantic apparatus of this school of criminal law develops? I will write two words on the blackboard and ask you to…Continue Reading

Is Putin Right? Has Liberalism Lost The World?

July 6, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Is Putin Right? Has Liberalism Lost The World?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN “The liberal idea has become obsolete. . . . (Liberals) cannot simply dictate anything to anyone as they have been attempting to do over the recent decades.” Such was the confident claim of Vladimir Putin to the Financial Times on the eve of a G-20 gathering that appeared to validate his thesis. Consider who commanded all the attention at the Osaka summit. The main event was Trump’s meeting with China’s Xi Jinping and their agreement to renew trade talks. Xi runs an archipelago of detention camps where China’s Uighur Muslims and its Kazakh minority have their minds coercively “corrected.” A major media focus at the summit was Trump’s meeting with Putin where he playfully admonished the…Continue Reading
