A Beacon Of Light… The Sabbath Is At The Heart Of The Church’s Life

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. He received his BA in religious studies and his MA in dogmatic theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn.) + + In last week’s column we discussed living the Second Commandment. Today we will consider the Third Commandment which is: “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.”Jewish tradition refers to the Sabbath as from sunset on Friday evening to sunset on Saturday. For Catholics, we observe the Sabbath as Sunday to recall the day of Jesus’ Resurrection. The Sunday celebration of the Lord’s Day and His Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life. Sunday is…Continue Reading

This Is A Win?

By DEACON MIKE MANNO It is hard to understand how a religious liberty case coming from an extremely liberal state supreme court can be rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court, and still be characterized as a win. Yet one of our favorite conservative legal commentators did just that. So I invited her onto our radio program, and she came, and explained. And I think she is right. Here is the case in a nutshell:Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission has operated since 1932 and is a tax-exempt organization and recognized as a church equivalent by the Internal Revenue Service. It requires its staff to “affirm its statement of faith which declares ‘the Bible is the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God’.” The Mission’s…Continue Reading

“Let ‘Em Out!”

By BARBARA SIMPSON If we are to believe the media, there are thousands of Californians who are leaving the state. Not for vacations — these are permanent moves to “somewhere else.”The reasons are as varied as the lives of the people involved, but one major consideration for many is the fact that the crime rate in the state is growing. It is worse in the large cities, but crime and how criminals are dealt with is a problem across the state. One of the aspects of this is the fact that there’s a tendency on the part of local elected officials to be relatively “soft” on crime and the criminals. One prime example is the District Attorney for the City and…Continue Reading

Finland’s Prosecutor General Continues Battle Against Religious Freedom

April 16, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Finland’s Prosecutor General Continues Battle Against Religious Freedom

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Last week we reported that on March 30, a court in Finland had unanimously dismissed all charges in the trial of two prominent Christians. Member of Parliament and medical doctor Paivi Rasanen and Bishop-Elect and Dean Juhana Pohjola had been charged with hate crimes simply for expressing their Christian beliefs on fundamental moral issues.“It is not for the district court to interpret biblical concepts,” the court said, and the prosecution was ordered to pay more than 60,000 Euro in legal costs. The decision brought a sigh of relief from the defendants. However, the prosecution was given seven days to appeal, and on April 7, Prosecutor General Raija Toiviainen announced her intention to do so.“This case has been hanging…Continue Reading

Nice Catholicism

April 15, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Nice Catholicism

By JOE SIXPACK As Benedict XVI said in a homily at a funeral Mass in 2017, the Church is on the verge of capsizing. We’re in terrible shape in the Western world, not just the United States. One of the biggest reasons for the Catholic Church being in the shape she’s in is because after the Second Vatican Council (but not because of the Council), saboteurs within the Church wanted to “fundamentally change” the whole Church. (Sound familiar?) And boy did they ever!Contrary to the Jesus of the Gospels and the documents of Vatican II, these traitors watered down catechesis, flat-out denied some dogmas and doctrines, and attempted to transform Jesus from the Incarnate Word of God to Jesus the…Continue Reading

April 14, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Pope Francis In Malta… “Protect The Beauty Of Life”

By COURTNEY MARES VALLETTA, Malta (CNA) — Upon his April 2 arrival in the Republic of Malta, Pope Francis urged local government authorities to protect life and appealed to the international community to work for peace in the midst of war, which he said has “swept down powerfully upon the lives of many people and affected us all.”“Malta, which shines brilliantly in the heart of the Mediterranean, can serve as an inspiration to us, for it is urgent to restore beauty to the face of a humanity marred by war,” Pope Francis said in the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta.Embarking on his first international trip of 2022, the Pope landed on the Mediterranean island country at 9:50 a.m. for the…Continue Reading

The Love of Christ… A Layman’s Lessons on Suffering

April 13, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The Love of Christ… A Layman’s Lessons on Suffering

By MARY BLACKLOCK Suffering has a way of concentrating the mind. Anyone who has experienced a serious illness can attest to its life-changing implications. You learn that even when you are dealing with difficulties, life is comparatively easy when you feel well. When you are sick or in chronic pain, everything changes. You long for the pain-free difficult life; for the ability to whine about things while still being able to sleep at night.Dealing with a prolonged illness is like being in sick school. The classes include “Why Are You Sick?”, “Coping with Pain,” “Why Me Exactly?”, “Where Are You God?”, and the most challenging class, “What to Do if There Is No Cure.” Regardless of the intellectual exercise of…Continue Reading

A Beacon Of Light…Honor His Holy Name By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. He received his BA in religious studies and his MA in dogmatic theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn.) + + As we study the Catechism, the Ten Commandments are being examined, assisting us on the journey of faith. Last week we looked at the First Commandment and our reflection touched upon who God is. More important, we focused on how we are called to honor God, and Him alone. The First Commandment is the foundation of all the other Commandments.Today we move on to the Second Commandment…Continue Reading

Religious Exemptions… Not Always Popular With Some Elements

April 11, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Religious Exemptions… Not Always Popular With Some Elements

By DEACON MIKE MANNO During the past few years we have been overwhelmed by the coronavirus pandemic — or, perhaps it would be better rephrased as: over the last few years we have been overwhelmed by the governmental response to the pandemic. We have seen lockdowns, mask requirements, and other “public health” measures imposed by officials who were either working for the public good, to protect the population from the dreaded disease, or, as heard from many quarters, they were working to control and impose their own hidden agendas. That latter observation is bolstered by the fact that there were churches which were not only required to be closed while strip clubs and abortions facilities were allowed to remain open, but were…Continue Reading

The Attempt To Banish Nature

April 10, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The Attempt To Banish Nature

By DONALD DeMARCO The central irony of feminism, which was founded in the interest of giving due respect to the special gifts of women, has logically led to the denial that there is such a being as a woman. “I understand,” writes feminist Julia Kristeva, “by ‘woman’ that which cannot be represented, something that is not said, something above and beyond nomenclature and ideologies.”Gender studies Professor Rebecca Jordan-Young, author of Brain Storm: The Flaws in the Science of Sex Differences, states that there is not even a singular biological answer to what is a female. Another gender expert, Sarah Richardson, author of The Maternal Imprint: The Contested Science of Maternal-Fetal Effects, argues that science cannot settle what are really social…Continue Reading
