March 19, 2020 Featured Today Comments Off on A Book Review . . . Forming True Christians Through Frequent Confession

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY Frequent Confession by Fr. Benedict Baur (Scepter Publishers, 266 pages, paperback). Available at amazon.com. Frequent Confession by Fr. Benedict Baur is divided into two parts. The first deals with the subject of frequent Confession itself while the second longer part is entitled, “Considerations” and looks at topics such as the nature of sin, how to overcome deliberate venial sins, self-love, contrition, and compunction. It has been maintained by some that the idea of frequent Confession is an outmoded practice, but this was definitely not the position of the author of this book. And in this he was echoing the views of Pope Pius XII who saw such a practice as vital for those wishing to make…Continue Reading

By REY FLORES Filmmaking brothers Andrew and Jon Erwin have done it again with yet another touching movie about faith and music. If there are two things which I love in my life, those would be my Christian faith and playing and writing music. Their new movie follows 2018’s terrific film about singer and songwriter Bart Millard of Christian rock band MercyMe and the powerful hit song I Can Only Imagine, inspiring the film by the same name. It was the touching story about Millard’s upbringing in a broken home with an abusive father, and how he overcame these adversities to become an award-winning musician. Actors J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid delivered powerful performances on how a father and…Continue Reading

By HANNAH BROCKHAUS VATICAN CITY (CNA) — The Vatican announced March 6 that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Philippe Cardinal Barbarin as archbishop of Lyon after his recent acquittal at the conclusion of his appeal of a 2019 conviction of failing to report abuse. January 30 the French cardinal was acquitted of last March’s conviction of failing to report the sexual abuse of a minor by a diocesan priest. He had received a six-month suspended prison sentence. Barbarin, 69, had submitted his letter of resignation to Pope Francis after his initial conviction in March 2019, but it was not accepted, pending his appeal. The Vatican stated at the time that Pope Francis preferred to leave “Cardinal Barbarin free…Continue Reading

The Unbreakable Carpenter

By RAY CAVANAUGH For much of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, priests in England were hunted down like wild animals by their anti-Catholic pursuers. Such priests, once caught, faced gruesome and lethal punishments. To prevent such a fate, there was one man who worked wonders. He wasn’t a clergyman, nor a statesman, nor an author. Instead, he was a tradesman, skilled in the extreme and willing to use those skills despite the peril in which he placed himself. His name was Nicholas Owen. Canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970, his feast day is March 22. Details of Owen’s early life are sketchy. It is likely that he was born in Oxford, England, in 1562. His family were devout Catholic…Continue Reading

In Today’s Climate Of Confusion . . . Can The Church Still Attract Converts?

March 15, 2020 Featured Today Comments Off on In Today’s Climate Of Confusion . . . Can The Church Still Attract Converts?

By DONALD DeMARCO I have a friend who is taking the RCIA program (Rite of Initiation of Christian Adults). She has some legitimate concerns about joining a Church that is beset with so many problems, especially on the level of leadership. No doubt her concerns are shared by many others who are thinking seriously about becoming Catholics. To these people who are on the doorstep but are hesitating to enter the room, I would like to make four points. Historical Perspective: The Church has been around for roughly 2,000 years and has not only survived, but has prevailed in the midst of innumerable problems. No other institution can boast of such longevity. The contemporary scene is just another obstacle that…Continue Reading

Is This How Europe Ends?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN “Fortress Europe is an illusion.” So declares the Financial Times in the closing line of its Saturday, March 7 editorial: “Europe Cannot Ignore Syrian Migrant Crisis.” The FT undertakes to instruct the Old Continent on what its duty is and what its future holds: “The EU will face flows of migrants and asylum seekers across the Mediterranean for decades to come.” Can Europe not repel this unwanted home invasion from the Global South? It is “delusional” to think so, says the FT. Europe must be realistic and set about “providing legal routes for migrants and asylum seekers.” What occasioned the editorial was Greece’s rough resistance to Turkish President Erdogan’s funneling of thousands of Syrian refugees, who…Continue Reading

Bishop Strickland . . . The New Testament And Choosing Happiness

March 11, 2020 Featured Today Comments Off on Bishop Strickland . . . The New Testament And Choosing Happiness

By MOST REV. JOSEPH STRICKLAND The New Testament is filled with examples of the connection between what we choose and who we become. Two will suffice. We become adulterers when we look at a woman with lust (Matt. 5:28); what comes out of our heart (the heart is the biblical center where freedom is exercised, human choices are made and character is formed through choice) is what makes us unclean (Mark 7:14-23). Freedom has consequences. The capacity to make choices is constitutive of our being human persons and reflects an aspect of the Imago Dei, the Image of God, present within us. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council wrote in their document on the Mission of the Church:…Continue Reading

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — An abortionist who was seen on a video last October pointing what appeared to be a gun at a pro-lifer is scheduled for trial on April 22, preceded by oral argument on March 13, a Maricopa County court spokesman told The Wanderer. Ronald Yunis, MD, pointed the object as he drove from the parking lot in his red Tesla at the Acacia Women’s Center onto East Osborn Road here on October 10. One of the pro-life protesters outside the abortuary, Elvis Kesto, was wearing a camera. The pro-lifers gave a copy of the video and reported the event to Phoenix police the same day. However, Yunis wasn’t arrested. Kesto is a member of the non-Catholic…Continue Reading
