Abortion And Immigration

March 10, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Abortion And Immigration

By DONALD DeMARCO Abortion is a wall that prevents immigrating unborn children from entering the world. It has the approbation of Hollywood, the media, and all those who baptize themselves as “liberal.” Nowhere in the world is border security so tight. Approximately one million such potential immigrants are killed each year in America alone. Opposition to this procedure is widely condemned as “anti-choice,” “backward thinking,” and “ultra-conservative.” Immigrants from foreign countries can be documented; the unborn cannot. Compassion is restricted to the outsider. On the other hand, loosening border security to allow a flood of immigrants from other countries to enter the United States is regarded as respectful of their dignity and a sterling example of social justice. By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For an electronic copy of this article with footnotes, e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) + + + “If any single age really attains, by eugenics and scientific education, the power to make its descendants what it pleases, all men who live after are the patients of that power, slaves to the dead hand of the great planners and conditioners. If man chooses to treat himself as raw material, raw material he will be” — C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man. + + + Eugenics was a well-established and respected science from the late 1800s until World War II, when it fell…Continue Reading

For A Great-Nephew… A Short History Of Religious Orders And Religious Life

March 7, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on For A Great-Nephew… A Short History Of Religious Orders And Religious Life

By PHILIP TROWER Dear B.: When we were having lunch the other day I told you that the chaplain in the Catholic old people’s home where I am now living is “a friar” and you replied “What is a friar?” You seem to have forgotten about Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. As Friar Tuck, however, isn’t a good example of what a friar should be, we will leave him aside. The word “friar” is a shortened form of the word “frater” meaning “brother” and is the name for a member of a Catholic community of men leading lives dedicated to the service of God and their fellowmen through prayer and some kind of work which can be practical, missionary, or…Continue Reading

Restoring The Sacred . . . From Mount Tabor To Calvary

March 6, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Restoring The Sacred . . . From Mount Tabor To Calvary

By JAMES MONTI Although the sacred season of Lent begins with a decided emphasis upon repentance, a theme that will remain a major priority over the forty days that follow, the subject of the Passion, which will overshadow all else in the last two weeks before Easter, is ever present as a strong undercurrent from Ash Wednesday onward. On this upcoming Second Sunday of Lent the Church will present to us, as she has for centuries, the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. This event has long been understood as our Lord’s way of preparing and fortifying the Apostles Peter, James, and John for “the scandal of the cross,” for the mystery of His Passion, for it is they who…Continue Reading

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY (Editor’s Note: Terence P. Jeffrey is the editor-in-chief of CNSnews.com. Creators Syndicate distributes his column. All rights reserved.) + + + “You’re going without me?” My not-yet six-year-old daughter stood resolutely between us and the door. “Yes,” I said. “Your mom and I need to go.” “Without me?” “We only have two tickets.” “Why?” My profoundly puzzled daughter asked this question in complete sincerity. The story that answers it began several weeks before that moment of familial crisis in a midtown Manhattan hotel. I was driving to work one March morning in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. — listening to talk radio. The lead local news story that day had nothing to do with politics or…Continue Reading

One Moment In Time

March 4, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on One Moment In Time

By DONALD DeMARCO The Ancient Greeks had two words for “time”: Chronos and Kairos. The former referred to chronometric time. We refer to a watch as a chronometer. This is time that unfolds second by second and can be measured. In this regard, all moments are equal. The latter referred to a moment in time that stood above all the other passing moments. Kairos indicated that a particular moment was “momentous,” worthy of honoring and remembering. When Kairos enters Chronos, something very special takes place. In Old Testament theology, Kairos conveys the sense of “ripeness.” In Ecclesiastes, we read: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and…Continue Reading

A Book Review…. An Influential Liberal Network

March 3, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on A Book Review…. An Influential Liberal Network

By JUDE DOUGHERTY Snyder, Brad. The House of Truth: A Washington Political Salon and the Foundations of American Liberalism. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. 811 pp. Cloth, $34.95. The house in question in the book’s title was located at 1727 Nineteenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. It belonged to Robert G. Valentine and served as a political salon from 1911 to 1919, a brief period, to be sure, but with consequences for the nation. Valentine shared the house with Felix Frankfurter and Winfred T. Denison. Oliver Wendell Holmes lived nearby at 1720 Eye Street and became a frequent visitor. The house served as a meeting place where Frankfurter, Louis D. Brandeis, and Henry L. Simpson, and others could develop their ideas…Continue Reading

A Book Review . . . How Gosnell Became Tightly Stitched Into The Social Fabric

March 2, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on A Book Review . . . How Gosnell Became Tightly Stitched Into The Social Fabric

By DEXTER DUGGAN Gosnell: The Untold Story of America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer, by Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer, Regnery Publishing, www.Regnery.com, Washington, D.C., ISBN 978-1-62157-455-2, 367 pages hardback, $27.99, 2017. If unborn babies were affixed in the womb as strongly as Planned Parenthood is entrenched in the power structure, it’d be about impossible to abort the babies. But they’re innocent, soft, and small, while abortionist PP is hardened and humongous. Denying hundreds of millions of dollars of annual taxpayer funding to a private organization with a monstrously destructive agenda shouldn’t be so difficult. But even two practicing Catholic speakers of the U.S. House, John Boehner and Paul Ryan, threw up their hands in surrender and helped shovel the wealth…Continue Reading

It was in no way evil for Hitler to regard mental disease as a scourge on society. . . .
