If Trump Didn’t Hate Planned Parenthood Before, He Does Now

January 29, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on If Trump Didn’t Hate Planned Parenthood Before, He Does Now

By JONATHON van MAREN (LifeSiteNews) — On Saturday, January 21, hundreds of thousands of progressive activists packed the U.S. capital for the Women’s March on Washington, a full-throated and angry rejection of Donald J. Trump as president of the United States. From my position in the middle of the crowd, I saw hundreds of signs that read “F*** Trump,” dozens of others that called him every name imaginable, grotesque caricatures of the new president, and one particularly repugnant sketch of him giving a woman oral sex. From the stage, Madonna launched an expletive-laced attack on Trump, while actress Ashley Judd referred to him as “Hitler,” a name reflected in many of the slogans on the signs. The message from the…Continue Reading

A Book Review… A Colorful, Engaging Book About British History

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY British History an Illustrated Guide, by Hugh Williams (St. Edward’s Press Ltd, approximately $32.00 including shipping, payment via PayPal: www.stedwardspress.co.uk/british-history/). This is an engaging book about British history, and a very lavishly illustrated one, too. It begins by noting that for such a small place Britain is crammed with historical sites and memories. It then moves through the country’s history in a chronological way, starting with the pre-Roman period, and with a focus on the Celts. Williams discusses some of the theories as to the origins of the British people, which are naturally rather difficult to untangle at a distance in time of 3,000 years. There is a tendency to dismiss the traditional history of Britain…Continue Reading

Strictly Speaking

January 27, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Strictly Speaking

By DONALD DeMARCO Strictly Speaking is the title of Edwin Newman’s defense of the English language against various assaults coming from politicians, journalists, and other linguistic vandals. “Will America be the Death of English?” is the subtitle. “The outlook is dire; it is a later point in time than you think,” according to the former NBC house grammarian. But that was 1974 and his fears have not exactly materialized. We now face a far more pernicious language problem: the pervasive use of perfectly good English words that convey the wrong meaning. I describe, very briefly, ten instances that illustrate this problem, one that threatens both communication and the kind of idealism that is necessary to sustain a civilization. Authority: It…Continue Reading

(Editor’s Note: The Cardinal Newman Society [https://cardinalnewmansociety.org] published this report on January 20, 2017. The CNS staff wrote it. All rights reserved.) + + + Four years after bestselling author William Peter Blatty filed a canon law petition asking the Vatican to correct serious abuses of Catholic identity at Georgetown University, The Cardinal Newman Society has publicly released extensive documentation that was included in the petition. The 124-page report released January 20, including more than 400 footnoted citations, identifies Georgetown faculty members who have advocated for abortion and same-sex marriage and even held high positions in Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations. Other concerns relate to the Jesuit university’s trustees, job and internship programs, student activities, commencement speakers, and other…Continue Reading

Culture Of Life 101… “In-Vitro Fertilization: Unnatural Selection”

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For an electronic copy of chapter 15 of The Facts of Life, “Artificial Reproductive Technologies,” e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) + + + In the previous article, we discussed the adverse psychological effects that “pregnancy reduction” abortions often have on women who undergo assisted reproductive procedures and then find themselves — in their opinions — carrying too many babies. What often goes unmentioned is that surviving children who discover their prenatal histories are often psychologically disoriented and frequently suffer as well. The Psychological Effects. Some studies have shown that a certain variety of “survivor syndrome” appears in some children who discover…Continue Reading

Living In The Liberal Bubble

January 24, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Living In The Liberal Bubble

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Conservative commentators have been having a field day of late mocking what they call the campus “snowflakes” who are seeking “safe spaces” to deal with Donald Trump’s election to the presidency. But have you wondered if there are intelligent and clear-headed members of the liberal establishment who are also taking stock of the overreaction of the students? Universities are supposed to be the training ground for our future leaders, for mature and rational young people worthy of being called the nation’s “best and brightest.” You can’t get more “establishment” than longtime New York Times reporter Nicholas Kristof. In his December 10 column he makes clear his discomfort as he watched our universities “echoing with primal howls,”…Continue Reading

A Parting Shot At Personal Freedom

January 23, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on A Parting Shot At Personal Freedom

By JUDGE ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO On January 3, outgoing Attorney General Loretta Lynch secretly signed an order directing the National Security Agency — America’s 60,000-person-strong domestic spying apparatus — to make available raw spying data to all other federal intelligence agencies, which then can pass it on to their counterparts in foreign countries and in the 50 states upon request. She did so, she claimed, for administrative convenience. Yet in doing this, she violated basic constitutional principles that were erected centuries ago to prevent just what she did. Here is the back story. In the aftermath of former President Richard Nixon’s abusive utilization of the FBI and CIA to spy on his domestic political opponents in the 1960s and 1970s…Continue Reading

Restoring The Sacred… The Anima Christi

January 22, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Restoring The Sacred… The Anima Christi

By JAMES MONTI At the very moment when the sacred waters of Baptism are poured over the head of a newborn child, that child in an instant becomes heir to an incredible patrimony — all the invisible riches, to be sure, of sanctifying grace, the Scriptures and the sacraments, but also nearly two thousand years of liturgical rites, prayers, holy writings, sacred music, and religious art and architecture. Among all these splendid riches are the prayers we say every day, enriching our daily lives. With the recitation of these prayers becoming “routine,” we sometimes fail to reflect upon all that their words have to offer. Among these prayers is the Anima Christi (“Soul of Christ”), a simple but powerful text…Continue Reading

Propagandists To The End . . . Manning’s A “Young Woman”; Vietnam’s “Raging Capitalist”

January 21, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Propagandists To The End . . . Manning’s A “Young Woman”; Vietnam’s “Raging Capitalist”

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY (Editor’s Note: Terence P. Jeffrey is the editor-in-chief of CNSnews.com. Creators Syndicate distributes his column. All rights reserved.) + + + White House Spokesman Josh Earnest and Secretary of State John Kerry finished President Barack Obama’s final term with fitting acts of propaganda. Had you listened uncritically to Earnest, you would have thought a male soldier imprisoned for leaking classified documents was a “young woman.” Had you listened uncritically to Kerry, you would have thought the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was a “raging capitalist” country. And, if you agreed with both, you would qualify for a job at The New York Times. On CBS on Wednesday, January 18, Charlie Rose asked Earnest about Obama’s decision to…Continue Reading

Should Old Aquinas Be Forgot?

January 20, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Should Old Aquinas Be Forgot?

By DONALD DeMARCO Thomas Aquinas was born in the year 1224 in Rocca Sicca, the hereditary castle of the counts of Aquino in the Neapolitan province. While he was residing in the womb, a holy man brought a prophecy to the unborn child’s mother, Theodora, countess of Aquino: “Rejoice, O lady, for thou art about to have a son whom thou shalt call Thomas….Such will be his learning and holiness that his equal will not be found throughout the world.” The prophecy was fulfilled. At the hearing for the canonization of St. Thomas Aquinas in 1319, a statement from the archbishop of Naples was introduced. According to the testimony of the good bishop, Friar Giacomo di Viterbo, “Our savior had…Continue Reading
