Pope’s General Audience … On Holy Year Of Mercy

December 22, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Pope’s General Audience … On Holy Year Of Mercy

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning! Last Sunday, the Holy Door was opened in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Cathedral of Rome, and a Door of Mercy was opened in the cathedral of every diocese of the world, as well as in shrines and churches indicated by bishops. The Jubilee is in the whole world, not only in Rome. I wanted this sign of the Holy Door to be present in every particular Church, so that the Jubilee of Mercy could become a shared experience by every person. Thus the Holy Year got underway in the whole Church and is celebrated in every diocese as at Rome. Moreover, the first Holy Door was opened in fact in the heart of Africa.…Continue Reading

British Columbia Supreme Court… Restores Accreditation To Trinity Western University’s School Of Law

December 21, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on British Columbia Supreme Court… Restores Accreditation To Trinity Western University’s School Of Law

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The British Columbia Supreme Court on December 10 reversed the Law Society of British Columbia’s decision to deny accreditation to Trinity Western University’s proposed law school. LSBC originally voted to accept graduates of the school but changed its decision in October 2014 because of the university’s biblical beliefs on appropriate sexual behavior. TWU went to court in August 2015 to challenge the denial. Now the province’s Supreme Court has ruled that the Law Society’s first decision, which approved the academic qualifications of TWU graduates, should be restored. In January, a Nova Scotia court similarly upheld the school’s professional accreditation. “Canadians should be free to live and work according to their sincerely held beliefs and convictions. Faith-based educational…Continue Reading

Mom And The Three Elves

December 20, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Mom And The Three Elves

By FR. MICHAEL P. ORSI The week between Christmas and New Year was usually uneventful at St. Paul Catholic Church. That is if it didn’t snow. With so many folks away visiting family and friends, and the Stone Harbor, N.J., snowbirds having migrated to Florida for the winter, we were always short of muscle for shoveling. As fate would have it, one year a snowstorm hit on New Year’s Eve. It lay beautifully around the church. But, with people arriving for the Vigil Mass, the danger of someone slipping outweighed the postcard quality of the scene. Of course, I was younger then, and even with the obvious effects of Muscle World on my person, I knew I couldn’t clean the…Continue Reading

Before Midnight Mass

December 19, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Before Midnight Mass

By MARK AMOROSE Out of the black, a burst of aural light: the newborn carols that we, singing, pray deny it is the middle of the night, and in the dark we hear the break of day. Each song-starved tongue, each fasting ear, revives, prepared by Advent abstinence to feast: From voluntary limits on our lives, the manna of the music is released. And thus we hark, and herald angels sing the first noel — in dulci jubilo! We walk with Wenceslas the servant-king, following where the saint has marked the snow. And when the organ sounds the starting chord we are in David’s city with the Lord.

Culture Of Life 101… “What Are “Heresy,” “Apostasy,” And “Schism”?”

The Eyes Of Memories Past

December 17, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on The Eyes Of Memories Past

By DEREK BECHER Ever since the first time I heard my father’s cherished Christmas carols echoing softly throughout the cozy, softly glowing rooms of our small country home, when I was just a young child, something stirred inside, shivering my soul, that seemed to mean peace, and joy. I couldn’t quite explain it, but it didn’t matter, for it seemed so right and wonderful. And now, listening to those same lovely harmonies in the comfort of my own home, I’m taken back to a fond childhood Christmas memory. I’m there, sitting in wonder, listening to those familiar sounds of Christmas, watching the smile, still on his face, as his happy but watery eyes look beyond the sparkling tinsel out into…Continue Reading

A Christmas Message From Paul Likoudis

December 16, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on A Christmas Message From Paul Likoudis

To My Dear Friends At The Wanderer: As Christmas approaches, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the many readers who have supported me over the past year. Your support has been absolutely crucial — your prayers as well as the contributions which you have so kindly provided to help my family. Your gifts have literally kept us in our home for the past two years. Especially humbling are the many thanks for my work over the past decades for The Wanderer, and also the expressions of solidarity from those who are enduring similar trials themselves or in their families. Believe me, I do keep you in my prayers as you have asked. I continue to watch as best I can…Continue Reading

For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering words they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded” (Romans 16:17-18). + + + The great Chinese military strategist…Continue Reading

A Missing Link: The Last Fifty Years

December 14, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on A Missing Link: The Last Fifty Years

By PHILIP TROWER Recently The Catholic Herald, one of our most reliable English Catholic weeklies, recently published an article by George Weigel on Vatican II and the subsequent fifty years called “Mission Abandoned” and carrying on the cover the phrase “George Weigel says we’ve wasted the last 50 years on infighting.” Professor Weigel is one of our most distinguished Catholic writers who over the years has done great work in the service of the Church. This in itself makes me hesitate to take issue with him. But in addition to that is the fact that if I do I shall expose myself to the charge of carrying on the “infighting.” However, there is one serious omission in his article which,…Continue Reading

Not Just Another Christmas Story

December 13, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Not Just Another Christmas Story

By JOE PROCOPIO In October of 1958 I remember the election of Pope John XXIII. In December of that same year he celebrated his first Christmas Mass as Pope. It was also the first time that the Church had the technology to set up a broadcast of the Christmas Mass worldwide with radio and television. Being 2,000 years old, the Church is the oldest living organization on Earth and she invited everyone in the world to be a part of this memorable Mass. There were people from all over of the globe — purple-robed cardinals, peasants, average men and women, intellectuals, dummies, poor, rich, religious, non-religious, Catholic and non-Catholic alike from nearly every nation. Even though this was a brand-new…Continue Reading
