Probable Cause

March 30, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Probable Cause

By ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO Except for the definition and mechanism of proving treason, no area of the Constitution addressing the rights of all persons when the government is pursuing them is more specific than the Fourth Amendment. The linchpin of that specificity is the requirement that the government demonstrate probable cause to a judge as a precondition to the judge issuing a search warrant. The other specific requirement is identity: The government must identify whose property it wishes to search or whose behavior it wishes to monitor, because the Fourth Amendment requires that all warrants specifically describe the place to be searched or the person or thing to be seized. The principal reason for these requirements is the colonial revulsion…Continue Reading

This is the second of a two-part article.) +    +    + Blatant forms of coercion are even seeping into the institute that guards our freedoms, the United States armed forces. If the guardians can be deprived of their freedoms, what chance do the rest of us have? Senior Master Sgt. Phillip Monk had a distinguished career in the Air Force, unblemished by even the slightest disciplinary action. In August 2012, his commanding officer, Major Elisa Valenzuela, an openly practicing lesbian, ordered him to make…Continue Reading

Is Europe Cracking Up?

March 28, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Is Europe Cracking Up?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN A week ago, in the St. George’s Hall in the Kremlin, Russia’s elite cheered and wept as Vladimir Putin announced the re-annexation of Crimea. Seven in 10 Russians approve of Putin’s rule. In Crimea, the Russian majority has not ceased celebrating. The re-conquest nears completion. In Eastern Ukraine, Russians have now begun to agitate for annexation by Moscow. Ukrainian nationalism, manifest in the anti-Russia coup in Kiev, has produced its inevitable reaction among Russians. While praising the Ukrainians who came out to Maidan to protest peacefully, Putin said that those behind the decisive events “resorted to terror, murder and riots. Nationalists, neo-Nazis, Russophobes, and anti-Semites executed this coup.” The Kremlin erupted in cheers. But not only…Continue Reading

Culture Of Life 101 . . . “What Is The Status Of China’s Population Control Program?”

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For an electronic copy of chapter 4 of The Facts of Life, “The Chinese Forced Abortion Program,” e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) +    +    + In 1980, the People’s Republic of China rolled out its family planning program with a flourish. Chan Muhua, director of the Chinese Family Planning Board, announced that “socialism should make it possible to regulate the reproduction of human beings. We should be able to produce human beings under a quota system, just as we produce bicycles and tons of steel.” But in China, socialism has enabled the government to greatly restrict the production of human beings.…Continue Reading

This is the first of a two-part article.) +    +    + When pro-family people claim that homophile groups are pushing a “special rights” agenda, they are roundly condemned and ridiculed by homosexual leaders, the media, and the glitterati. “Gay rights” organizations assert that they are not asking for special rights, but only for the same rights that everyone else enjoys. For example, activist Frank Brown said that “I want to go to my job. I want to have a home. I want to save…Continue Reading

Wanderer Writer Henry V. King Dies

March 25, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Wanderer Writer Henry V. King Dies

WESTBURY, N.Y. — Henry V. King, writer of more than 500 New York-based bylined news stories for The Wanderer over a 13-year period, ending in 2001, passed away on March 6, 2014. He was 90. A Catholic activist, and strongly pro-life, King for nearly 15 years usually picketed outside Long Island abortion mills on Saturday mornings in Hicksville, and in later years, Syosset, N.Y. He was arrested in pro-life demonstrations in New York and Florida. As an active member of the Immaculate Conception chapter of Catholics United for the Faith during the 1980s and 1990s, King served for four years on its board of directors, and for some years did the organization’s public relations work. A prolific letter-writer — usually…Continue Reading

Aquinas And Francis On Greed

March 24, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Aquinas And Francis On Greed

By DONALD DeMARCO “Your eyes are bigger than your belly,” my mother used to say to me. I don’t think she coined the expression, despite the authoritative tone she used whenever she enunciated it. Nor do I think she meditated at length on its rich philosophical implications. But she was fond of reiterating this cozy maxim, and its timeless message did not fall either on deaf ears or on a forgetful memory. She may be pleased to know that she now has the Holy Father to amplify her motherly advice. “Wanting more than you need” is a simple definition of greed. I prefer my mother’s version because it suggests that greed makes our foolishness embarrassingly conspicuous. I can easily imagine…Continue Reading

Is Putin The Irrational One?

March 23, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Is Putin The Irrational One?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Vladimir Putin seems to have lost touch with reality, Angela Merkel reportedly told Barack Obama after speaking with the Russian president. He is “in another world.” “I agree with what Angela Merkel said . . . that he is in another world,” said Madeleine Albright. “It doesn’t make any sense.” John Kerry made his contribution to the bonkers theory by implying that Putin was channeling Napoleon: “You don’t just, in the 21st century, behave in 19th-century fashion by invading another country on a completely trumped-up pretext.” Now that Putin has taken Crimea without firing a shot, and 95 percent of a Crimean electorate voted Sunday, May 16 to reunite with Russia, do his decisions still appear…Continue Reading

Freedom For Me, But Not For Thee

March 22, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Freedom For Me, But Not For Thee

By ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO Initially, I was gratified to learn that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.), the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was unafraid to take on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) over the issue of domestic spying. The CIA is limited by its charter to stealing secrets from foreigners outside the U.S. However, in a recent dust-up, Feinstein took to the Senate floor to accuse the CIA of spying on staff members of her committee while they were examining CIA documents in Virginia. This may be the first acknowledgment by any senior government official who walks the halls of the intelligence community that the CIA engages in domestic spying. For five years, the Senate Intelligence Committee has been…Continue Reading

Passing On The Faith… The Role That Families Play

March 21, 2014 Featured Today Comments Off on Passing On The Faith… The Role That Families Play

By FR. JOHN FLYNN, LC (Editor’s Note: Fr. John Flynn, LC, is a regular contributor to ZENIT News Agency, which provided this essay. All rights reserved.) +    +    + Religious practice in terms of attending formal ceremonies has declined significantly in past decades. That brings up the problem as to how religious faith and participation is transmitted between generations. A number of children brought up in families that regularly practice their faith go on to leave their churches. Yet other children do continue to be religiously active. Why is it that some families successfully pass on the faith, while others do not? This is the subject of a recently published book, Families and Faith: How Religion Is Passed Down Across…Continue Reading
