Gleefully Received By Media Foes . . . Gregory’s Attack On Trump Reflects Extent Of Social Disorder

June 19, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Gleefully Received By Media Foes . . . Gregory’s Attack On Trump Reflects Extent Of Social Disorder

By DEXTER DUGGAN Amid the riots, looting, arson, assaults, and other crimes committed across the United States supposedly in the interest of social and racial justice as May ended and continuing into June, the fierce June 2 statement by Washington, D.C., Archbishop Wilton Gregory against President Trump helped to illustrate how far the social disorder had spread. The national leadership of the pro-disorders Democratic Party has been able to continue its aggressive march farther left — now flirting with anarchy — because it generally received no pushback from its fans in dominant “news” media or the Catholic Church bureaucracies that formerly were regarded as representing the Catholic faithful. One example would be the indulgence granted by leading Catholic Church spokesmen…Continue Reading

Cardinal Pell . . . The Persecution Continues

June 18, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Cardinal Pell . . . The Persecution Continues

By JOHN YOUNG SYNDEY, Australia — “I hope George Pell has been sufficiently weakened by the prison he deserved to spend the rest of his miserable life in and now dies slowly and painfully from COVID 19.” That was the response tweeted by feminist Clementine Ford when the High Court of Australia unanimously acquitted George Cardinal Pell of all the charges against him. (Quote reported by The Catholic Weekly, Sydney, April 13, 2020.) That was one of the more extreme reactions, but it illustrates the bigotry manifested by a significant number of commentators and others. And later they got more ammunition for their attacks when the redacted section of the Royal Commission report on sexual abuse was made public. The…Continue Reading

No Surrender

By JOE SIXPACK The Fourth Commandment is: “Honor your father and your mother.” This commandment obliges us to respect our parents, help them in their needs, and to obey them in all that is not sinful. In the days prior to the Communist takeover of China, an old missionary priest stood before a group of his first communicants on the morning of their First Holy Communion and spoke to them about the dangers that are in the world, and showed them how a Christian who carries Jesus in his heart is able to resist these temptations. He related the story of Tarcisius who, when only 13 years old, during a horrible Roman persecution courageously offered to carry Jesus to his…Continue Reading

Rules To Counter Radicals

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD I’ve mentioned Saul Alinsky before as well as his 1971 book, Rules for Radicals. Alinsky, as you may recall, was a socialist who, after brief stints working for the state of Illinois, went on to become a community organizer, writer, and political activist The book was designed as a guide for organizers of low-income communities, the “have-nots,” as Alinsky called them, to gain political, economic, and legal power, and was based on his thirty-some years of experience as a community organizer. Alinsky himself was the subject of a well-researched documentary a few years ago for EWTN by Arcadia Films, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, which outlined Alinsky’s career of bringing cultural Marxism into the Church…Continue Reading

In The Glare Of The Flames . . . Rioters’ Rule Doesn’t Look So Different From Old Red Guard

By DEXTER DUGGAN The left-wing chaos imposed here and there around the nation revealed its own kind of conformity amid the disorder. Only certain ways of thinking and living would be considered acceptable, even when they extended to unimaginable extremes like doing away nationwide with police departments, even when prisons prematurely were releasing inmates. And the left also wants to take away law-abiding people’s firearms? If the political thugs with their massive destruction had been wearing Donald Trump’s MAGA hats, dominant media would be screaming for military help from around the world to suppress them. But as long as these media viewed the thugs as their ideological kindred, although perhaps a bit untidy, the “news” and opinion slant was on…Continue Reading

“Racism” Replaces Abortion As “Preeminent Issue” For U.S. Bishops

June 13, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on “Racism” Replaces Abortion As “Preeminent Issue” For U.S. Bishops

By CHRISTOPHER MANION America’s bishops have been struggling to regain their balance ever since the lockdowns began. Financial ruin faced our schools, parishes, even entire dioceses. Catholics everywhere were starving for the sacraments. Recently, a brave few prelates dared to shed the onerous handcuffs imposed by their Blue State governors. Without the government’s permission, they announced that Catholics could return to Mass. They were surprised at the alacrity with which the authorities backed off. Many among the laity had been insisting for months that the ban on public Masses was a violation of our religious freedom, but most bishops had proven unwilling to challenge the quarantines. Democrats were undoubtedly pleased at how little resistance their burdensome diktats had provoked, not…Continue Reading

A Scotsman’s Midnight Train Journey To The Catholic Faith

June 12, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on A Scotsman’s Midnight Train Journey To The Catholic Faith

By JAMES MONTI Good books have a way of taking us on totally unexpected journeys. Quite recently I had an experience of this sort with a small volume dating from 1570 in the rare books room of the seminary library where I work as a book clerk. Entitled Axioms Concerning the Sacraments of the Church, this slender volume of less than ninety pages is a concise summary of the sacramental theology of St. Thomas Aquinas arranged in ninety-six axioms drawn from the saint’s Summa Theologiae by Augustine Hunnaeus (1521-c. 1578), a theologian and professor at the University of Louvain. Biographical details of Hunnaeus’ life are scant, yet from his pen we learn the “one thing necessary” about who he was.…Continue Reading

Better Not Ask . . . What More Blows From Fate Will U.S. And World Face In 2020?

By DEXTER DUGGAN Some events truly happen only once in the history of a nation or even the world, such as Americans first setting foot on the moon nearly 51 full years ago, in July 1969. But some other years have such an eruption of major occurrences that a person is left wondering, what possibly could top this? Tear gas was in the air in America in the 1960s from rioting, even as people looked toward the moon, and the eye irritant was floating again in 2020 as SpaceX Crew Dragon memorably returned NASA astronauts to a mission in nearby space from U.S. soil in Florida on May 30. June 2020 had only begun, with more than half of the…Continue Reading

A Martyr For The Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass

June 10, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on A Martyr For The Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass

By JOE SIXPACK Emperor Diocletian launched the bloodiest, most cruel persecution of all the emperors against the early Church. Indeed, he used Christian bodies dipped in tar and tied to stakes to light the streets of Rome at night. So the cruelty of his soldiers was a natural extension of his own cruelty. One day a virgin named Anysia was going to participate in the Mass, when one of Diocletian’s soldiers stopped her along the way. “Stop!” he shouted, “Where are you going?” Anysia was terrified. She made the sign of the cross and replied, “I’m a servant of Christ and I’m going to our assembly to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.” “I’ll see that you don’t,” said…Continue Reading
