Why The French-Ahmari Debates Matter

By SHAUN KENNEY For those of you attuned to such controversies, there was a debate little noticed by the media in general but widely panned within Catholic intellectual circles at The Catholic University of America two weeks ago. The aptly named “Thrilla at the Basilica” or the “Melee at CUA” brought over 600 attendees to the newly restored Heritage Hall — for alumni, that’s the old cafeteria at University Center East — featuring two heavyweights: Mr. David French of National Review and Mr. Sohrab Ahmari of the New York Post. The topic of the debate? Could have been cloaked in the language of Catholic integralism, but truly was centered more around civility in the public square. Let me set the…Continue Reading

St. Gianna’s Final Sacrifice Well-known… But What Of Her Decades Of Faith That Came Before?

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Although St. Gianna Beretta Molla is “known for the final witness she gave by being willing to offer her life for the life of a child,” the 20th century Italian saint and mother, canonized in 2004 by St. John Paul II, had grown up in a family that always strove for holiness, a speaker told an audience attending an Institute of Catholic Theology (ICT) program here. St. Gianna, who died at age 39 in 1962, shortly after giving birth to her fourth surviving child, was a Catholic physician who earned her medical degree in what at the time was a male-dominated profession, and who strove to reach out to others as she kept awareness of…Continue Reading

Have A Good Trip

By FR. MICHAEL P. ORSI (Editor’s Note: A priest of the Diocese of Camden, N.J., Fr. Michael P. Orsi currently serves as parochial vicar at St. Agnes Parish in Naples, Fla. He is host of Action for Life TV, a weekly cable television series devoted to pro-life issues, and his writings appear in numerous publications and online journals.) + + + Do you believe you’re going to Heaven, or are you going to Hell? That’s really an unanswerable question, because we don’t know our final destination. Dante’s epic poem, Inferno, is what gives us our picture of historical figures trapped eternally in the various regions of Hell. As far as Church doctrine goes, however, the only person we’re certain is…Continue Reading

Saving Souls, Not Whales Should Be Pope Francis’ Focus

September 17, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on Saving Souls, Not Whales Should Be Pope Francis’ Focus

By REY FLORES Various media outlets noted an encounter Pope Francis had with reporters on the papal plane as he made his way to visit several African nations. Nicolas Seneze handed him a copy of his recently published book, How America Wants to Change the Pope. When asked about the book, the Pope responded that it’s “an honor if the Americans attack me.” Americans? Yes, we’re Americans, but in my belief, I consider myself a Catholic before anything else. Why does Pope Francis say things like this? Talk about being thin-skinned and divisive. I’m fairly confident that if you’re reading The Wanderer, you probably are praying your daily rosary as well. You know that part toward the end where we…Continue Reading

Democrats… Choose Secularism Over Religion

September 16, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on Democrats… Choose Secularism Over Religion

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD When following the news, it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s time to laugh or cry. I never thought, for example, that we would seriously debate the number of sexes that exist; I never thought that public schools would allow boys and girls to use the same shower facilities at the same time; I never thought that we would try to legislate how churches operate or govern themselves; I never thought that our concept of family would be twisted and construed beyond all recognition, or that abortion could mean an after birth procedure. And I never thought that, in America, socialism might be praised while God might be a forbidden topic. Unfortunately, however, that has…Continue Reading

As Mattis Laments “Contempt”. . . Didn’t Former Pentagon Chief See That Suppression Was Culprit?

By DEXTER DUGGAN Donald Trump’s former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis had been dubbed one of the adults in the room by Trump foes who painted the president as a tantrum-throwing child in need of mature supervision. Trump’s defenders might reply that if these were tantrums, they’re a corrective that the U.S. sorely needed. Whether or not Mattis agreed that he had been a necessary adult, the retired Marine Corps general expressed his concern on September 8 that one of the important threats to the United States today is the amount of sharp division between people here. Asked by Face the Nation moderator Margaret Brennan on CBS News what he considered “the biggest national security threat,” Mattis broke it down…Continue Reading

Making The House Representative Again

BY CHRISTOPHER MANION Rep. Sean Duffy, a Catholic member of Congress from Wisconsin, announced on August 26 that he will leave Congress before his term is up. Why? His ninth child will need heart surgery when the baby’s born next month, CNS News reports. “I’m not a lifetime member of Congress,” Duffy told Fox News. “Service is not for a lifetime. . . . We [Republicans] have better transition than Democrats. Democrats stick around forever.” Duffy has served in Congress since 2011. Duffy’s decision befits a family man. “There’s 435 members of Congress. There’s only one Duffy dad,” he says. He’s made no plans on what he’ll do next, apart from taking care of his family when Duffy baby number…Continue Reading

From The Papacy Of “Clarity And Dialog” . . . In-Flight Press Conference — More Stones From The Vatican

By JOSEPH MATT In yet another in-flight press conference, Pope Francis in his return from Madagascar has created more confusion with his ambiguous and seemingly disingenuous remarks to a question asked by Jason Drew Horowitz from The New York Times. Pope Francis is not a doctor but reading the following interview one is easily reminded of the old idiom “physician heal thyself.” Unfortunately one is hard pressed to see any evidence of the physician taking his own advice especially in response to matters such as the McCarrick scandal, the Vigano allegations, the dubia, the filial correction, and the multitude of other situations that require answers and clarity from the Chair of Peter. The Holy Father states in this interview that…Continue Reading

U.S. Presence in Afghanistan Should Have Only 1 Goal

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY Eighteen years ago, al Qaida terrorists who had entered the United States attacked the U.S. in the U.S. In response, we launched a war on the other side of the world. The lead inspector general for Operation Freedom’s Sentinel — the current name for the war in Afghanistan — described that war’s genesis and original purpose in his latest report. “On October 7, 2001,” said that report, “the U.S. launched combat operations in Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom to topple the Taliban regime and eliminate al Qaida, the terrorist organization responsible for the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.” U.S. military action did remove the Taliban from power in Kabul, but it did not…Continue Reading

Lifting Boxes To Release Souls . . . The Burden Of Possessions Includes Filling The Moving Van

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Molly’s treasures on Earth were even lighter than her thin frame in well-worn clothing. She approached me for the first time a few years ago, a complete stranger, as I prayed in church after daily Mass. Molly (a pseudonym I’m supplying for a very real person) just wanted to have a spiritual chat. She returned on another day. Around the third time, she recommended a certain pamphlet of prayers to read. Molly was an older woman who, she went on to tell me, just lived out of her banged-up pickup truck, which I later saw in the church parking lot. She didn’t ask for money, although she apparently had little to her name. She truly…Continue Reading
