Crisis, Chaos, And Capitulation

By CHRISTOPHER MANION After the murderous attacks by a terrorist who mowed down kids and pedestrians with a rental truck in New York City, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made a startling admission: He actually uttered the forbidden words, “Radical Islam.” He further revealed that the terrorist had been radicalized not in his home of Uzbekistan, but only after his arrival in the United States. Not surprisingly, NBC News offered this headline in reporting the massacre: “Muslim Americans again brace for backlash after New York attack.” Not to be outdone, Cong. Jerrold Nadler (D., N.Y.) bellowed tired banalities on MSNBC, wrapping up with his solution: New York should fight terrorism by “strengthening regulation of truck rentals.” Meanwhile, New York Archbishop…Continue Reading

That Other Plot — To Bring Down Trump

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Well over a year after the FBI began investigating “collusion” between the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has brought in his first major indictment. Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort has been charged with a series of crimes dating back years, though none is tied directly to President Donald Trump or 2016. With a leak to CNN that indictments were coming, Mueller’s office stole the weekend headlines. This blanketed the explosive news on a separate front, as the dots began to be connected on a bipartisan plot to bring down Trump that began two years ago. And like Murder of the Orient Express, it seems almost everyone on the train had a hand…Continue Reading

A Potpourri… Apostasy, Possession In Vegas, And Other Matters

November 2, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on A Potpourri… Apostasy, Possession In Vegas, And Other Matters

By GEORGE A. KENDALL At age 75, I find myself reflecting more and more on my youthful experience with apostasy. When I was 22, I “left the Church.” I came back at 35, having had time to think much more deeply about the issues involved and, more important, to do a lot of growing up. During those thirteen years, I thought of myself variously as an atheist, an agnostic, and a kind of “nondenominational Christian” grounded (if that is possible) in liberal Protestant theology (Paul Tillich influenced me greatly in those days. Later, I atoned by publishing a lengthy article in Faith and Reason lambasting his theology of revelation). In the end, I came to appreciate the truth of Walker…Continue Reading

Religious-Liberty Attorney . . . Warns About Rising Discrimination Against Christian Conscience

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Holding to God’s truths today can “make us strangers in this world,” as pressures against faithful Catholics increase in society, the founder of the internationally active Alliance Defending Freedom, Alan Sears, told parishioners at St. Thomas the Apostle Church here. After citing hostility against Catholics going back to the colonial era in North America, before the United States began, Sears referred to remarks earlier this year by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito speaking to the Advocati Christi organization of Catholic attorneys and judges. A mid-March story by the Associated Press said that at a talk in Madison, N.J., sponsored by the organization, Alito “discussed the hostility faced by Catholics in the U.S. over the…Continue Reading

Hardly A Worthy Candidate For Canonization! . . . Reprinted from The Wanderer on 450 Anniversary Of The Reformation

October 31, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Hardly A Worthy Candidate For Canonization! . . . Reprinted from The Wanderer on 450 Anniversary Of The Reformation

Bishop William Adrian (Nashville, Tennessee)   Reprinted from The Wanderer September 21, 1967 In presenting the picture of Martin Luther I want to be completely objective, and rely on the authority of some of the most reputable scholars available, many of whom are non-Catholics. During the last century, especially since 1883, the four hundredth anniversary of the birth of Luther, there have been two Luthers – one of panegyric, romance and fiction, and the other the Luther of fact. Since the 450th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation is being commemorated this year, these TWO Luthers are still being presented. Only recently an ardent clerical Catholic ecumenist wrote that the Catholic Church now admits that it has been…Continue Reading

When Counterculture At Georgetown Becomes Counterfeit

By SHAUN KENNEY Georgetown University is perhaps an unofficial rival of The Catholic University of America. Of course, we were always keen upon hearing of a stray Hoya to ask them rather pointedly, “Why didn’t you go to a real Catholic university?” before laughing it off. Back when I was a lowly freshman at CUA, our crucifixes were thankfully going back up after many years of absence, while at Georgetown they were reportedly all coming down in the name of diversity and for fear of offending a soul. Of course, that’s what the cross is supposed to be — offensive, a crux. Christ crucified; a stumbling block (1 Cor. 1:23). That’s the whole point. Apparently, some stumbling blocks are more…Continue Reading

Free Speech For Me But Not For Thee

By MIKE MANNO I was intrigued by a recent article in the Daily Princetonian written by a junior philosophy major, Ryan Born. It was an argument against free speech — at least for conservatives. It was a reflection on what is wrong on university campuses today. Now I don’t know the young man who wrote the article, and I am sure he is sincere and a good student, but it is his ideas that I have trouble with, especially in today’s current politically correct climate. A climate that says some conservative views, whether on religion or politics, have no business being heard. “I am not arguing that conservatives do not expect intellectual opposition to their content; instead, I am arguing…Continue Reading

Flake’s Sudden Exit . . . Another Sign That Elite’s Duplicity Gives Voters A Weapon

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — The Washington, D.C., swamp is in a trap of its own making, giving cage-rattling reformers a key advantage against the gnarly gators who’d prefer to keep snoozing in the corruption while the public demands action to save the United States. Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon was speaking both generally against the swamp critters and specifically against Sen. Jeff Flake (R., Ariz.) at a rally in suburban Scottsdale on October 17 when Bannon denounced the elite’s rejection of voters, saying, “They hold you in total and complete contempt. They think you’re a group of morons.” (See last week’s Wanderer, p. 1.) Elite politicians’ own arrogance and duplicity handed voters a rod to beat them…Continue Reading

Europe At The Crossroads

October 28, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Europe At The Crossroads

By CHRISTOPHER MANION When Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla of the Czech Republic made a state visit to the United States in 2003, the European Union (EU) was considering a “constitution.” In spite of considerable opposition, the constitution’s supporters succeeded in making sure that the document made no mention of Europe’s Christian roots — in fact, they opposed even the mention of religion. At an informal dinner, I asked Prime Minister Spidla to explain this view, which he supported. “I have just returned from Athens,” he told me. “It is there, and not in Rome, that Europe finds its true roots.” Welcome to the Europe of the Unknown God (Acts 17:23). In the years since, the EU has been perpetuating that…Continue Reading

Is Liberalism A Dying Faith?

October 27, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Is Liberalism A Dying Faith?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Asked to name the defining attributes of the America we wish to become, many liberals would answer that we must realize our manifest destiny since 1776, by becoming more equal, more diverse, and more democratic — and the model for mankind’s future. Equality, diversity, democracy — this is the holy trinity of the post-Christian secular state at whose altars Liberal Man worships. But the congregation worshiping these gods is shrinking. And even Europe seems to be rejecting what America has on offer. In a retreat from diversity, Catalonia just voted to separate from Spain. The Basque and Galician peoples of Spain are following the Catalan secession crisis with great interest. The right-wing People’s Party and far-right…Continue Reading
