And when the heat came down and I was left on the ground, the devil appeared like Jesus through the steam in the street, showing me his hand, I knew even the cops couldn’t beat. I felt his hot breath on my neck as I dove into the heat. It’s so hard to be a saint in the city, when you’re just a boy out on the street. And the sages of the subway sit just like the living dead, as the tracks clack out the rhythm, their eyes fixed straight…Continue Reading

The Religious Impulse And Christianity

June 6, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on The Religious Impulse And Christianity

By DONALD DeMARCO William James’ The Varieties of Religious Experience is a classic in its field. It was originally delivered as the Gifford Lectures in Edinburgh between the years 1900 and 1901. A great deal has transpired in the study of religion since that time. Nonetheless, The Varieties of Religious Experience is extremely helpful in today’s world in which religion is increasingly dismissed as some form of superstition while atheism appears to be a growing phenomenon.James is a fair-minded and meticulous thinker. Like his brother, Henry, the distinguished novelist, he also possesses a splendid gift for writing. Although he is not a Christian, he provides an important service not only for Christians but for all people who share in the…Continue Reading

Does Our Diversity Portend Disintegration?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN After nine people were shot to death by a public transit worker, who then killed himself in San Jose, the latest mass murder in America, California Governor Gavin Newsom spoke for many on the eve of Memorial Day weekend.“What the hell is going on in the United States of America? What the hell is wrong with us?”Good question. Indeed, it seems that the country is coming apart. In May, Congress, to address a spate of criminal assaults on Asian Americans, enacted a new hate crimes law to protect them.May also witnessed a rash of assaults on Jewish Americans to show the attackers’ hatred of Israel and support for the Palestinians in the Gaza war.The terms “racist” and…Continue Reading

June 4, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on In Xinxiang . . . Police Arrest The Bishop, Seven Priests, And Ten Seminarians

ROME (AsiaNews) — In the space of just two days, almost all the ecclesiastical personnel of the apostolic prefecture of Xinxiang were wiped out with an operation by the police forces of the province of Hebei. On May 21, Bishop Zhang Weizhu was arrested; the day before, the seven priests and ten seminarians were apprehended.Early in the early afternoon of May 20, at least 100 policemen from Hebei province — from Cangzhou, Hejian, and Shaheqiao — surrounded the building used as a diocesan seminary in Shaheqiao (Hebei). Xinxiang, in fact, used a small factory owned by a Hebei Catholic as a seminary. The police entered the building and arrested four priests, seminary professors, and three other priests who carry out pastoral…Continue Reading

Bishop Paprocki Says . . . Discussion On Eucharistic Coherence Must Proceed

June 3, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Bishop Paprocki Says . . . Discussion On Eucharistic Coherence Must Proceed

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNA) — Another U.S. bishop has reproached efforts to delay discussion of “Eucharistic coherence” by the whole conference.“Sadly, there are some bishops and cardinals of the Church who not only are willing to give Holy Communion to pro-abortion politicians, but who seek to block the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from addressing the question of Eucharistic coherence,” stated Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. He made his comments on May 26.The question of “Eucharistic coherence,” he added, “has taken on heightened urgency with the election of President Biden, a Catholic who promotes the evils of abortion, same-sex marriage, and transgenderism.”In a recent letter, Blase Cardinal Cupich of Chicago and other bishops asked the…Continue Reading

June 2, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on John Bradburne At 100 . . . Convert, Wanderer, Caretaker, Poet, Martyr

By RAY CAVANAUGH He led an extremely far-ranging life in both the distances he traveled and in the activities he undertook. He was also a misfit who eventually found a calling so noble that many now feel he is worthy of sainthood.John Bradburne was born in Skirwith, Cumberland, UK, on June 14, 1921. His father, Thomas William Bradburne, was an Anglican clergyman. After receiving his education at a prestigious boarding school, the younger Bradburne joined the British army, serving in Burma and British Malaya during World War II. He was courageous enough in combat, but his comrades tended to view him as a bit odd — he was known to start climbing trees spontaneously. As he saw more and more conflict…Continue Reading

Will Bishops Deny Biden Communion?

June 2, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Will Bishops Deny Biden Communion?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Last week, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops voted 168-55, more than 3-1, to provide new guidance for receiving Holy Communion.Behind the decision?Bishops’ alarm that the public religious practice of President Joe Biden is conveying a heretical message to the faithful and the nation. At Sunday Mass, Biden regularly receives Communion. Yet he not only supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to have an abortion, but his new administration also provides ample funding of abortions.Restrictions that existed in the Trump era, such as the Hyde Amendments that prohibit taxpayer-funding of abortions, are about to be lifted in the Biden presidency. If the “teaching document” the bishops are expected to produce is consistent with traditional doctrine, a…Continue Reading

Letter To A Christian Artist

June 1, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Letter To A Christian Artist

By PAUL KRAUSE What is the role of art and the artist today? As far as I can see it, there are two dialectically opposed visions of art and the artist. And Christians should be especially concerned and engaged in art and its future. The first, which is now all but commonplace and rather depressing, is art in service to zeitgeist politics. The product of Walter Benjamin’s monumental revolution in aesthetics, the subjugation of art to political causes, invariably destroys art as it becomes the shallow platform of the prevailing ideological directive despite the veneer of an avant-garde mask. The second vision, which was commonplace but now altogether destroyed, is art in service to enchantment and the transcendental yearning in man.Christians have…Continue Reading

Neither Left Nor Right, But Catholic . . . The Left Vs. Realities Of Race In America

May 31, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Neither Left Nor Right, But Catholic . . . The Left Vs. Realities Of Race In America

By STEPHEN M. KRASON America has been going through its latest period of racial turmoil and conflict. Leftist spokesmen and activists claim there is systemic racism — a term they never define — but segregation is now in the distant past, legal protection of civil rights has long since been enshrined into law, and Blacks and other minorities are in positions of prominence and influence in the country’s life and economy to the greatest extent in history. Of course, the left doesn’t much care about truth. They care about promoting their narratives, which aim to further their ideology. Part of what they don’t care about — and don’t do much to address — are the real problems, some of which…Continue Reading

Can Education Include Truth?

May 30, 2021 Featured Today Comments Off on Can Education Include Truth?

By DONALD DeMARCO I was invited recently to evaluate the commitment a Canadian university has made to “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity.” My evaluation was protected by anonymity, so I had no reason to fear any reprisals. I pointed out that these three words are not values in themselves and can easily turn into discrimination if logically applied. However, I strongly suspect that this university has little regard for logic. Both “Diversity,” as well as “Inclusivity,” taken literally, would invite contradictory members. I did not think it was a good idea for this particular university to mix neo-Nazis with the Ku Klux Klan, Quakers, and the Taliban. Diversity and Inclusivity are without limits and, if carried out, would invite mayhem.Even if…Continue Reading
