A Martyr For The Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass

June 10, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on A Martyr For The Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass

By JOE SIXPACK Emperor Diocletian launched the bloodiest, most cruel persecution of all the emperors against the early Church. Indeed, he used Christian bodies dipped in tar and tied to stakes to light the streets of Rome at night. So the cruelty of his soldiers was a natural extension of his own cruelty. One day a virgin named Anysia was going to participate in the Mass, when one of Diocletian’s soldiers stopped her along the way. “Stop!” he shouted, “Where are you going?” Anysia was terrified. She made the sign of the cross and replied, “I’m a servant of Christ and I’m going to our assembly to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.” “I’ll see that you don’t,” said…Continue Reading

Media: WWJD?

June 8, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Media: WWJD?

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD We’ve all seen the wristbands, placards, and bumper stickers: What Would Jesus Do? And we wonder what would happen if we all asked ourselves that question before we acted. And, from my perspective, what would Jesus do if He were the editor of a global, secular media enterprise? How would the news be presented? What kind of slant would He put on it? And would He be able to make a profit doing it His way? Well, it’s been tried. In Topeka, Kans. In March of 1900. The editor of the local newspaper, The Topeka Daily Capital, J.K. Hudson, intrigued by the writings of a local Congregationalist minister, Rev. Charles Sheldon (1857-1946), asked the good…Continue Reading

Silence For Years On Pro-Abort Dems . . . But See Fumes From D.C. Archbishop When GOP’s Trump Angers Him

June 7, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Silence For Years On Pro-Abort Dems . . . But See Fumes From D.C. Archbishop When GOP’s Trump Angers Him

By DEXTER DUGGAN After bad Catholic Vice President Joe Biden claimed to be a practicing Catholic at the March 30, 2016, White House Easter prayer breakfast, I promptly contacted the media-relations office of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., to obtain a comment. Biden, after all, was a firm opponent of foundational Catholic and Christian beliefs. He favored massive permissive abortion, took credit for persuading President Barack Obama to favor “same-sex marriage,” supported compulsion of religious believers to act against their consciences, as well as backing embryonic stem-cell research. I asked, “Does the archdiocese plan to make any statement on Vice President Biden’s claim at the March 30 Easter prayer breakfast that he is a practicing Catholic? His public opposition…Continue Reading

President Trump Visits Shrine Of St. John Paul II

June 6, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on President Trump Visits Shrine Of St. John Paul II

By CHRISTOPHER MANION On June 1, President Donald Trump and Mrs. Trump visited the Knights of Columbus Shrine of St. John Paul II in Washington. There they honored the revered champion of religious freedom and laid a wreath at the foot of the statue of the great saint. To commemorate the visit, President Trump returned to the White House and signed the “Executive Order on Advancing International Religious Freedom,” affirming America’s defense of religious liberty that is imperiled here at home and throughout the world. “Religious freedom, America’s first freedom, is a moral and national security imperative,” the document reads. “Religious freedom for all people worldwide is a foreign policy priority of the United States, and the United States will respect…Continue Reading

Bishop Strickland . . . The Right To Religious Freedom Should Inform Our Voting

June 5, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Bishop Strickland . . . The Right To Religious Freedom Should Inform Our Voting

By MOST REV. JOSEPH STRICKLAND In his World Peace Day message for 1988, Pope St. John Paul II said: “Religious freedom, an essential requirement of the dignity of every person, is a cornerstone of the structure of human rights, and for this reason an irreplaceable factor in the good of individuals and of the whole of society, as well as of the personal fulfillment of each individual. It follows that the freedom of individuals and communities to profess and practice their religion is an essential element for peaceful human coexistence. . . . The civil and social right to religious freedom, inasmuch as it touches the most intimate sphere of the spirit, is a point of reference for the other fundamental rights and in some way…Continue Reading

Skipping Past The Power Of Big Media… “Rome Boys” Evangelize The World From Texas

June 4, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on Skipping Past The Power Of Big Media… “Rome Boys” Evangelize The World From Texas

By DEXTER DUGGAN Technology allowed mass communications like large-circulation newspapers, radio, and television to replace the voice of the old town crier shouting nearby news. But now newer technology lets anyone sitting at home cry out a message to anywhere on the globe. Three Catholic men with young families in the Diocese of San Angelo, Texas, decided they wanted to evangelize in a big way from a small home base. Beginning their chats in February and calling their program the “Rome Boys,” they already “have followers from all over the world including Europe and Africa,” one of the Texans, Tony Frasco, told The Wanderer on May 25. “We started Rome Boys because there is so little Catholic content out there…Continue Reading

God’s Marine

June 3, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on God’s Marine

BY JOE SIXPACK On one particular occasion a Marine used some very bad language and mentioned the name of our Lord very disrespectfully. The chaplain happened to be nearby and overheard the Marine. He jerked the young man to his feet and forcefully repeated the same words he’d just heard. The rest of the Marines in the group were astounded. “Now,” said the chaplain sternly, “you’ve heard me say it, Marine! And I’m a priest. How does it sound to you?” The Marine was shamefaced and silent. “It ought to turn your stomach,” the chaplain said, and left. It probably did, as there was a marked decrease in profanity in the unit from that time on. The Second Commandment is:…Continue Reading

“Muckrakers” Fight Back

June 1, 2020 Frontpage Comments Off on “Muckrakers” Fight Back

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD I wonder how many people reading this column know the name of Nellie Bly. Nellie Bly was one of the forerunners of today’s investigative journalism, which is often described by the pejorative “muckraking.” Nellie came from the era of intense newspaper competition that not only produced muckraking, but also the term “yellow journalism.” Thus we tend to lump it all together and apply it to our least favorite news outlets and persons. Muckraking, however, was a term Theodore Roosevelt coined, referring to the Man with the Muck Rake in Pilgrim’s Progress, who would not look up as he worked. While it was not intended to be a compliment, originally it was a neutral description used…Continue Reading
