The Privilege Of Kneeling

August 21, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on The Privilege Of Kneeling

By JAMES MONTI Those who are not new to this “Restoring the Sacred” column know that we have visited the topic of kneeling more than once over the years. Yet it is a subject with such vast implications for the reverent celebration of the sacred liturgy and for fruitful growth in the spiritual life that it deserves a further look, especially in light of the fact that there continues to be widespread neglect of this foundational posture of Catholic worship. Previously we have spoken of kneeling as the ultimate manifestation of reverence; here we seek to work out further dimensions of this act of adoration. One evening recently while I was praying in a chapel, a visitor entered who, while…Continue Reading

Are We Still One Nation Under God?

August 20, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on Are We Still One Nation Under God?

By DONALD DeMARCO After visiting America, G.K. Chesterton asked himself the question, “What makes America peculiar?” He answered his own question with accustomed perspicacity: “America is the only nation in the world that is founded on a creed. That creed is set forth in the Declaration of Independence. . . . It enunciates that all men are equal in their claim to justice, and that governments exist to give them that justice, and that their authority is for that reason just.” According to Mortimer Adler, in his book, We Hold These Truths, the Declaration is, “in the most profound sense, a preface to the Constitution, more fundamental politically than the Constitution’s own preamble.” That creed is set forth with sparkling…Continue Reading

Socialized Medicine, Student Fees, And Acceptable Speech

August 19, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on Socialized Medicine, Student Fees, And Acceptable Speech

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD For all those who favor government controlled health care, this is for you: Tafida Raqeeb is a five-year-old girl who suffers from a rare condition called arteriovenous malformation, which caused a blood vessel in her brain to burst. She was taken by her parents, Shelina and Mohammed, for treatment at the Royal London Hospital where British doctors told the parents that there was nothing they could do for Tafida. The little girl is now in a coma. In a repeat of a story that we’ve heard many times before, the British doctors are refusing the parents’ request to release Tafida for treatment elsewhere. The “elsewhere” is the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa, Italy, a facility…Continue Reading

Proud Of Whose Flag?. . . Hong Kongers Admire U.S. Ideals, While Illegal Aliens Defy Them

By DEXTER DUGGAN In a world that has gone from bulky computers to miniaturized devices with far more capabilities in three decades, how little has changed in some other ways that could have improved freedom and communication. In 1989, the totalitarian Chinese Communist government crushed young pro-democracy demonstrators right in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square with a bloodletting. Thirty years later, in 2019, continued economic reforms have made China a different place, but still under a powerful dictatorship. Young pro-democracy protesters went so far as to shut down Hong Kong’s busy international airport temporarily in August 2019, and once again the Communist-led military awaited orders for action on a wider front. Hong Kong is less under Beijing’s direct control than the Chinese…Continue Reading

With This Promise, Trump Can’t Lose!

August 17, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on With This Promise, Trump Can’t Lose!

By CHRISTOPHER MANION A millennial named David Ian Robin writes that, “When I graduated in 2011, I owed $137,000 in student loans. Today I have $175,000 [in debt] even as I continue making monthly payments. I will never own a home, start a family, or live debt-free.” “Bernie Sanders is the only person running who will cancel ALL student debt,” he adds. It would be unfair to examine Mr. Robin’s judgment, his decision-making over the years, even his understanding of basic arithmetic. Our purpose here is to acknowledge the sad fact of the massive ignorance that prevails among millions of America’s miseducated college students. The Democrat presidential contenders, taking the millennials’ illiteracy for granted, are falling over each other promising generous…Continue Reading

America In An Age Of Incivility, Propaganda, And Violence

August 16, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on America In An Age Of Incivility, Propaganda, And Violence

By REY FLORES Another week, another mass shooting — actually two shootings this time. Between Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, over 30 people lost their lives last week. Of course, the propagandist fake news media, and the Democrats, but I repeat myself, immediately tried to pin blame on none other than President Trump. They say that because of Trump’s supposedly divisive, inflammatory, and “racist” rhetoric, he is “empowering white nationalists” to act out violently against non-whites. Since the Democrats’ entire Russia collusion farce fell apart after Robert Mueller failed to deliver the goods against Trump a few weeks back, they went back to beating the dead horse of racism. From gropey old Joe Biden to that despicable “squad” of…Continue Reading

St. Thomas More Didn’t Die For This — Did He?

August 15, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on St. Thomas More Didn’t Die For This — Did He?

By SHAUN KENNEY Our European readers who are attempting to decipher the average Catholic in the United States would do themselves well to watch the film A Man for All Seasons featuring Paul Scofield as St. Thomas More and for good reason. One might posit that More’s example is what most Catholics in America think of when they consider the links between faith and citizenship. Allow me to rewind just a touch — a good 484 years to be precise. Thomas More was martyred in 1535 for his refusal to assent to the marriage, so goes the hagiography written by Robert Bolt in 1954 and turned into film after a successful debut on stage in London. By 1966, the story…Continue Reading

At Gallup Cathedral… New Ad Orientem Mass Receives “Overwhelmingly Positive” Response

August 14, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on At Gallup Cathedral… New Ad Orientem Mass Receives “Overwhelmingly Positive” Response

By DEXTER DUGGAN Response to the reintroduction of the historic ad orientem celebration of the Mass in the Diocese of Gallup, N.M., “has been overwhelmingly positive,” the diocese’s communications director told The Wanderer. Suzanne Hammons said there were “a lot of good conversations on social media when it was first announced — many people who had neutral or negative reactions did not realize that the ad orientem position is still the default,” in which the celebrant and congregation both face toward the Lord instead of facing each other in church. Gallup Bishop James S. Wall announced the change in a July 22 letter to the diocese, in the tenth year since he began his episcopal service there in largely rural…Continue Reading

Take A Breath… America Is Still A Decent Country Filled With Decent People

August 13, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on Take A Breath… America Is Still A Decent Country Filled With Decent People

By TUCKER CARLSON and NEIL PATEL What’s the point at which rhetoric forces action? When do words become incitement? At what point do political attacks get so reckless and unhinged that you can no longer heal the divide they create with politics? It’s hard to know exactly, but the left is getting very close. Take, for example, this exchange on MSNBC, in which frequent guest Malcolm Nance accuses the president of the United States of sending secret messages to neo-Nazis: “These people feel that they are the foot soldiers and executors of the disenfranchisement that the white race is feeling, and Donald Trump is giving them subliminal orders in their head,” Nance said. Subliminal orders? Whatever Trump’s faults, you can…Continue Reading

Who Ran The Mueller Investigation?

August 12, 2019 Frontpage Comments Off on Who Ran The Mueller Investigation?

By DEACON MIKE MANNO, JD I’m taking a bit of a vacation this year — most years I don’t — so I’m writing a couple of weeks ahead. Thus, as I write this, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has just finished testifying before two committees of the U.S. House of Representatives. I watched much, if not most, of both hearings. I was appalled. At the time that Mr. Mueller was appointed special counsel, the Democrats, the media, the progressive left, and nearly anyone sitting in his basement with a tin-foil hat believed — or at least claimed — that Donald Trump had won the White House because of unprecedented assistance from the Russians, courtesy of Vladimir Putin. Thus Mr. Trump was…Continue Reading
