A Beacon Of Light… What Does Mary’s Immaculate Heart Signify?

October 18, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on A Beacon Of Light… What Does Mary’s Immaculate Heart Signify?

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON, JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton, Jr., is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn.) + + In last week’s column, we discussed the great devotion of the Sacred Heart and its significance in our spiritual lives. Today we will continue our discussion on the importance devotions have in our spiritual lives. We will pay particular attention to the gift of the Blessed Mother, and her Immaculate Heart. While the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus focuses on how Jesus’ heart is full of love for us, the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary reflects on how Mary’s heart is full of love for the Savior. In this sense, it is…Continue Reading

The Battle Over Babies Continues

October 17, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The Battle Over Babies Continues

By DEACON MIKE MANNO We may have thought that since Roe v. Wade was overturned by Dobbs v. Jackson earlier this year that the ongoing battle over babies’ lives might be coming to an end. As much as we would wish, that is not even close to being true: Just take a look at last week’s column. The problem, of course, is that those who believe that a child’s life belongs solely to its mother as long as he is in utero will not back down from their extreme positions, even when, as we discussed last week, that child has already been born. But beyond that some states are now flexing their murderous muscles to keep women with crisis pregnancies from receiving…Continue Reading

A Former Student… And The Pulling Power Of Grace

October 16, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on A Former Student… And The Pulling Power Of Grace

By DONALD DeMARCO He is now a Catholic priest with the Companions of the Cross and working in Houston, Texas. On my desk sits a souvenir he sent me from Fatima depicting Mary and the three children to whom she appeared. The words, inscribed in Portuguese, indicate that he is praying for me from that holy city. It is a token of his thanks and friendship. When he first entered my philosophy class, he was an atheist. Grace works in unexpected ways. It is always God who is in charge of its dispensation. We do our best while continuing to hope for the best. And every once in a while, the unexpected happens and we give thanks. The catalyst in Carlos’ conversion…Continue Reading

Biden, Bombs, And Bombast

October 15, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Biden, Bombs, And Bombast

By CHRISTOPHER MANION “Among the calamities of war may be jointly numbered the diminution of the love of truth, by the falsehoods which interest dictates and credulity encourages” (Samuel Johnson, The Idler, 1758). + + In response to Vladimir Putin’s mention of Russia’s nuclear weapons, Joe Biden responded not with statesmanship, but political bluster. “We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis,” he told high-dollar Democrat donors in Manhattan last week. The Biden administration’s foreign policy (if it has one at all) has been chaotic and incoherent. It has failed to address, much less confront, the threat of America’s most dangerous enemy, Communist China. Beijing has paid no price for unleashing the Wuhan Virus…Continue Reading

The True Origins Of The Mass

October 14, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The True Origins Of The Mass

BY JOE SIXPACK Part 1 We normally think of apologetics as arguments that we make in defense of our faith to non-Catholics. But I frequently find myself having to defend certain aspects of Catholicism to my fellow Catholics. The thing I defend most is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This is because many Catholics demonstrate no respect for the Mass, or for the Holy Eucharist. If I bring an inquirer or catechumen to Mass and Catholics are treating It disrespectfully, this only demonstrates to my guest that the Mass is not important. So this is another type of explanation of the Mass, one I mostly use for Catholics. It is just as important to explain the Mass to Catholics as…Continue Reading

Dante, Virgil, Eliot

By PATRICK J. WALSH Last fall marked the seven-hundred-year anniversary of the death of Dante. Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was one of the greatest poets of all time. His Divine Comedy is a classic of world literature.Recently on the hemicycle staircase at the MFA Boston, I encountered a compelling statue of Dante and Virgil, which stirred to memory a line from the Divine Comedy. Entertaining my own muse, I said aloud: “What, are you here?” That line is from the Inferno, where Dante expresses surprise upon seeing his favorite teacher, Brunetto Latini, in Hell. T.S. Eliot used the same line in Little Gidding, one of the Four Quartets.Entitled, Dante and Virgil, the 1861 bronze by Baron Henri de Triqueti (1803-1874) depicts…Continue Reading

Welcome To America’s Make-Believe World

October 12, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Welcome To America’s Make-Believe World

By CHRISTOPHER MANION We used to pick up a good novel or see a new movie to enter the world of make-believe. Fantasy and fiction were categories of literature and art, enjoyed for what they were — a pleasant and often challenging indulgence of the imagination. Not anymore.During the lockdowns, Americans were forced to endure a lot of make-believe. Millions of kids went to make-believe schools, where make-believe teachers refused to teach, cashing their checks and abandoning their students. We were forced into make-believe safety, as genuine community life and social cohesion collapsed while we quietly quarantined to make-believe protect others, except for the very real victims of the abortion mills that were deemed “essential” and open for killing 24/7.While docile make-believe…Continue Reading

A Beacon Of Light . . . Renewing Devotion To The Sacred Heart Of Jesus

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn.) + + “Our business is to attain Heaven; everything else is a sheer waste of time.” These words were spoken by St. Vincent DePaul who championed renewal in priestly life and worked tirelessly to assist and help the poor and destitute. These words need to be heralded in our times. Many have forgotten that our responsibility as Catholics is to live lives worthy of the heavenly Kingdom. We might ask ourselves; how do we do this? Or even still, is it possible? The answer to these questions is yes! It is possible because the Lord Himself has given…Continue Reading

California’s Abortion Mecca

October 10, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on California’s Abortion Mecca

By DEACON MIKE MANNO If you have been following this column, you might remember that last May I wrote about a bill pending in the California legislature which would not only relax all restrictions on abortion but open the state to post-birth abortions. At that time the bill, AB 2223, had just passed out of committee and was waiting final approval in the Assembly before moving to the Senate.Of course the bill never directly approved the direct killing of a baby after-birth, either in the case of one who survived an abortion, or just a newborn that someone had and now wanted to get rid of, which the bill, as proposed, would allow for a convenient “at home” disposal. What the…Continue Reading

Did Feminism Kill Masculinity?

October 9, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Did Feminism Kill Masculinity?

By CHRISTOPHER MANION For the past twenty years, David Brooks has been The New York Times’ lone columnist daring to be occasionally conservative. His most recent piece, “The Crisis of Men and Boys,” gropes for causes of the withering away of masculinity in American life.Statistics abound. Girls do better than boys in school and stay longer. More women than men go to college. Women are more responsible than men. They strive harder and survive better in adversity. One in three American men with only a high school diploma — ten million men — is now out of the labor force. While men’s lifetime earnings have fallen, those of women have risen.Men lack ambition. They are demoralized. They lack initiative to achieve and…Continue Reading
