Catholic Universities: Identity, Faith, and Power

January 29, 2014 World News Comments Off on Catholic Universities: Identity, Faith, and Power

January 28, 2014 We are fighting to preserve and recover the Catholic faith in our schools precisely because it has been replaced by “Catholic identity.” Dr. Eric Cunningham  In the 1960s and ’70s, the name Marshall McLuhan became a household word for the bourgeoisie of the western world, and something of a mantra for its intelligentsia. McLuhan’s ground-breaking and often prophetic insights into the transformative effects of mass media and technology upon human consciousness gave him a rare status among professional academics—not only was he a professor of English in the every-day world, but a rock star in the realm of pop culture. While my own research in literature and postmodern culture has brought me into contact with McLuhan’s work…Continue Reading

January 28, 2014 World News Comments Off on Breaking: House passes ‘No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act’

BY DUSTIN SIGGINS Tue Jan 28, 2014 17:52 EST     WASHINGTON, D.C., January 28, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – By an overwhelming margin of 227-188, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 7, the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.”   Passed through the House Judiciary Committee on January 15, the Act would permanently enact several pro-life policies. The most prominent of these is the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funding for abortion except in cases of life of the mother, rape, and incest. Currently, the Hyde Amendment is approved annually.   H.R. 7 also prevents federal funding of health plans that include coverage for elective abortions, and eliminates federal funds for use by the District of Columbia for…Continue Reading

Why Don’t We Hear More Sermons on Marriage and Contraception?

January 26, 2014 World News Comments Off on Why Don’t We Hear More Sermons on Marriage and Contraception?

By Carson Holloway As Stephen White noted, Cardinal O’Malley of Boston is quite right to suggest that liberal institutions like the New York Times give far more evidence of being obsessed with same-sex marriage and contraception than does the Catholic Church.  Still, in his remarks on the question of “obsession” the Cardinal raised some questions that might be appropriate to pursue further.  He said the following as a way of showing that the charge of “obsession” is off the mark:   The normal Catholic in the parish might hear a sermon on abortion once a year. They’ll never hear a sermon on homosexuality or gay marriage. They’ll never hear a sermon about contraception. But if you look at the New…Continue Reading

The CWR Blog Gutting Gutting Fr. Joseph Fessio, SJ, responds. January 24, 2014 11:12 EST By Carl E. Olson This week marks the 41st anniversary of “Roe v Wade,” and so one of the contibutors to the New York Times wrote a piece titled, “Should Pope Francis Rethink Abortion?” Would you be aghast and amazed if you learned that the author believes that, yes, the pope should change his mind—and the teaching of the Church—about abortion? No? Would it surprise you at all to know that the author of the piece in question is a Catholic and a professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame? Hmmm. The author, Dr. Gary Gutting, is indeed a professor at Notre…Continue Reading

An Eventful Vatican Year Raises The Profile Of The Catholic Press

January 25, 2014 World News Comments Off on An Eventful Vatican Year Raises The Profile Of The Catholic Press

By Francis X. Rocca Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Few probably know it outside the ranks of the craft, but February is Catholic Press Month, when the church in the United States and Canada recognizes the importance of Catholic media and members of the Catholic media reflect in a special way on their service to the church. These are not easy times for Catholic journalism, which no less than its secular counterpart has been deeply unsettled by technologically driven changes in how readers and viewers receive and share information. The disruption seems bound to continue indefinitely and there is no consensus about where it will lead.

I Am Overwhelmed by 55 Million Babies Killed Since Roe v. Wade

January 21, 2014 World News Comments Off on I Am Overwhelmed by 55 Million Babies Killed Since Roe v. Wade

BY KRISTAN HAWKINS Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/22/13 11:40 AM What can I say that hasn’t already been said about today?   Yesterday evening, I was sitting in my living room working while watching my sons play. I began to think about what my life would have been without them. How different I would be. How their lives have already made this world a different place since they were born. How much I would hurt if I had chosen abortion.   Then, I thought of the more than 55,000,000 lives that have been taken in the U.S. since 1973, and I became overwhelmed at the tragedy. Tragedy for the babies, their mothers, their fathers, families, and us.…Continue Reading
