March 30, 2016 World News Comments Off on Poll: Only 50 percent of Italians call themselves Catholic

ROME (RNS) Italy may be the spiritual home of 1.2 billion members of the Catholic Church around the world, but a new poll shows only 50 percent of Italians consider themselves Catholic. The poll, published in the liberal daily L’Unita on Tuesday (March 29), challenges long-held perceptions that Italy is a ”Catholic” country, despite the popularity of Pope Francis and the historic role of the Vatican City State in the heart of Rome. In addition to the 50 percent who consider themselves Catholic, the poll, conducted in Italy by research firm SWG, found that 13 percent defined themselves as “Christian.” Of the 1,500 respondents, 4 percent said they were Orthodox or Protestant, 2 percent were Buddhist, 1 percent were Jewish and…Continue Reading

Bishop Hebda named archbishop of Twin Cities archdiocese

March 24, 2016 World News Comments Off on Bishop Hebda named archbishop of Twin Cities archdiocese

The Rev. Bernard Hebda has been named archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, church officials announced Thursday morning. Hebda has been the acting leader of the archdiocese since June 15, after Archbishop John Nienstedt resigned in the wake of a clergy sex abuse scandal, a series of related lawsuits and investigations, and a bankruptcy filing. Hebda, 56, was appointed Thursday morning by Pope Francis. Hebda said he was “humbled by this expression of Pope Francis’s confidence and honored to serve this Archdiocese with its rich history and its long tradition of extraordinary priests, zealous religious and empowered laity, all working to put their faith into action.”

Conservative Catholics endorse Ted Cruz as Trump alternative

March 20, 2016 World News Comments Off on Conservative Catholics endorse Ted Cruz as Trump alternative

(RNS) More than 50 conservative Catholic activists and political leaders have come out in support of Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz in an effort to shore up Catholic backing for Cruz as an alternative to Donald Trump. Among them is a priest from South Carolina who may be skirting the edges of his own church’s policies against clerics becoming involved in politics. Trump is currently leading the three-man GOP field and has drawn strong primary support from Catholic voters despite his controversial rhetoric and past stands on key issues like abortion rights, which he once supported. The Catholics endorsing Cruz, led by Princeton professor Robert George and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, cited Cruz’s opposition to abortion

Former Lutheran Pastor: “Why I Am Becoming Catholic …”

March 18, 2016 World News Comments Off on Former Lutheran Pastor: “Why I Am Becoming Catholic …”

For thirty years I labored away in parish ministry as a Lutheran pastor. Then for another four years, I was a district dean for the North American Lutheran Church (a supervisory work I enjoyed about as much as tooth decay). Now, as I write this in the run-up to Holy Week, I am about to become a Roman Catholic, along with my wife; me for the first time and her for the second. You may blame her for my conversion (though I think of it as a natural transition, as you’ll see). She was raised Roman Catholic and became Lutheran. Her father was raised Lutheran and became Catholic. Life is a darn strange thing at times. Her father died two…Continue Reading

GOP firm against SCOTUS hearings for Garland, but some break ranks

March 17, 2016 World News Comments Off on GOP firm against SCOTUS hearings for Garland, but some break ranks

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 17, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — The Senate’s GOP leadership says it isn’t budging on blocking President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, even as several senators have indicated they will meet with District of Columbia Court of Appeals Justice Merrick Garland. Garland is considered a center-left nominee, with a liberal record on gun rights but a more conservative record on criminal justice and related issues. Though the justice has apparently never ruled on abortion, pro-life and pro-family groups are strongly urging Republicans to reject his nomination.

March 17, 2016 World News Comments Off on Gay activists tout victory at NYC St. Patrick’s Parade, pro-life groups remain shut out

NEW YORK, March 17, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – The 255th annual parade meant to celebrate the Feast of St. Patrick in New York City is instead being touted as a victory for the homosexual movement. “I never thought I’d see the day when I could march up Fifth Avenue in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with my husband,” said Brendan Fay, chairman of the Lavender and Green Alliance, the second homosexual activist group allowed to march in the NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. “When we started in 1991, after getting arrested so many times for protesting the parade, wow, what a moment this is.”

March 16, 2016 World News Comments Off on Planned Parenthood CEO Applauds Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee

After President Barack Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday, Planned Parenthood President and CEO Cecile Richards applauded the president’s choice and urged the Senate to approve him. “Judge Garland is an intelligent, highly accomplished judge who has secured bipartisan support in his previous appointments,” Richards said in a statement. “Now that the President has upheld his constitutional duty, it is time for the Senate to uphold theirs. The American people des

Mother Teresa of Calcutta to be made Roman Catholic saint Sept. 4 – pope

March 15, 2016 World News Comments Off on Mother Teresa of Calcutta to be made Roman Catholic saint Sept. 4 – pope

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a nun who dedicated her life to helping the poor, will be made a saint of the Roman Catholic Church at a ceremony on Sept. 4, Pope Francis announced on Tuesday. Last December, he cleared the way for sainthood for the Nobel peace laureate, who died in 1997 at the age of 87 and was known as “saint of the gutters”. Teresa, who was born Agnese Gonxha Bojaxhiu of Albanian parents in 1910 in what was then part of the Ottoman Empire and is now Macedonia, became an international figure but was also accused of trying to convert people to Christianity.

University of Notre Dame to give ‘most prestigious’ award to pro-abort Joe Biden

March 9, 2016 World News Comments Off on University of Notre Dame to give ‘most prestigious’ award to pro-abort Joe Biden

March 8, 2016 (CardinalNewmanSociety) — Seven years after the University of Notre Dame received worldwide criticism for its public honor to pro-abortion President Barack Obama — including more than 367,000 signatures to The Cardinal Newman Society’s online petition and public opposition by 83 American Catholic bishops — Notre Dame has once again chosen to betray the Church and its Catholic mission. Notre Dame has announced that it will bestow its 2016 Laetare Medal, the “oldest and most prestigious honor accorded to American Catholics,” on pro-abortion Vice President Joe Biden. This time, however, the offense is even greater: a pro-abortion Catholic politician is being honored as one “whose geniu
