Canada Proposes Forcing Doctors and Nurses to Euthanize Patients

March 8, 2016 World News Comments Off on Canada Proposes Forcing Doctors and Nurses to Euthanize Patients

I have never seen a society jump so enthusiastically into the abyss that is the culture of death as Canada has in the last year. Once the Supreme Court ended the assisted suicide debate by fiat, euthanasia boosters stopped pretending to want a limited death license and let their true agenda out. Based on government and medical association proposed guidelines, Canada’s euthanasia regime will soon include: Death on demand for those with medically diagnosed serious sicknesses; Death on demand for those with disabilities; Death on demand for those with  medically diagnosed mental illnesses. Death on demand for “mature” children with the above conditions, perhaps with parental consent required; Nurses ordered to participate in euthanasia under the direction of a doctor, normalizing…Continue Reading

Card. Napier on Richards Invite: Georgetown Committed to ‘Political Correctness’ Rather Than Fidelity to the Church

March 8, 2016 World News Comments Off on Card. Napier on Richards Invite: Georgetown Committed to ‘Political Correctness’ Rather Than Fidelity to the Church

South African Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, OFM, took to Twitter to criticize the administration of Georgetown University for inviting Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) President Cecile Richards to speak on campus this April, and said students and staff should take a firm stance in defense of life. The Cardinal Newman Society broke the news on March 2 that the Lecture Fund at Georgetown invited Richards to campus. The Lecture Fund “is a non-partisan student-run organization that exists to enrich the academic experience of the Georgetown community. The Lecture Fund strives to bring speakers to Georgetown’s campus to enlighten, educate and, occasionally, entertain.” The next day, the University issued a statement defending its decision to allow Richards to speak on…Continue Reading

March 8, 2016 World News Comments Off on Archdiocese: Georgetown Invite of Richards Reflects Campus Environment Lacking ‘Morality, Ethics and Human Decency’

In a statement sent to The Cardinal Newman Society Monday night, the Archdiocese of Washington responded to the controversy surrounding the invite of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) President Cecile Richards to speak to students and staff at Georgetown University next month, criticizing the invitation and what it suggests about the campus culture at the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university. The Newman Society broke the news on March 2 that the Lecture Fund at Georgetown invited Richards to campus. The Lecture Fund “is a non-partisan student-run organization that exists to enrich the academic experience of the Georgetown community. Non-Catholics invited to the confessional

March 5, 2016 World News Comments Off on Non-Catholics invited to the confessional

The Roman Catholic Church is inviting non-Catholics to sample the experience of going to confession in an effort to promote the idea of forgiveness. As part of a global 24-hour “confession drive” led by Pope Francis this weekend, churches in England and Wales are also encouraging non-Catholics to go to confessionals to speak in strict confidence to a priest about problems or issues in their own lives.

Four nuns of Mother Teresa slain by gunmen in Yemen

March 5, 2016 World News Comments Off on Four nuns of Mother Teresa slain by gunmen in Yemen

Four gunmen attacked an old people’s home in the Yemeni port of Aden on Friday, killing at least 15 people, including four Missionaries of Charity nuns of Mother Teresa, the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia told the Vatican’s Fides news agency. The Vicariate said two of the slain nuns were from Rwanda and one each from India and Kenya. One nun who survived and was rescued by locals said that she hid inside a fridge in a store room. The gunmen, who first told the guard they were on a visit to their mother, stormed into the home with rifles and opened fire, one local official said. As well as the nuns, the dead included two Yemeni women working at…Continue Reading

Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church confirms communion with Rome: “what no totalitarian regime could break”

March 5, 2016 World News Comments Off on Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church confirms communion with Rome: “what no totalitarian regime could break”

(Vatican Radio) On Saturday Pope Francis met with leaders of the Permanent Synod of the Greek-Catholic Ukrainian Church. His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevhchuk affirmed communion with the Catholic Church despite a century of persecution inflicted by totalitarian regimes. Suffering in Ukraine included wars, genocides, a state-planned famine, and ethnic cleansing, all claiming some 15 million lives. Suffering continues in Ukraine for which the Permanent Synod seeks the Holy Father’s support. The statement of the Permanent Synod is reproduced below in full: As Pastors We Speak Out on Behalf of Our People Before the Holy Father and Before the World: “Pope Francis heard us.” “We came to reaffirm our communion with the Holy Father and to ask for his help for the…Continue Reading

Beyond Galling . . . Bishop pride has run amok and there’s no mercy for the faithful.

March 1, 2016 World News Comments Off on Beyond Galling . . . Bishop pride has run amok and there’s no mercy for the faithful.

Is there no limit to the hubris and egos of some American bishops? It has arrived at a place that is beyond galling. Fifty-nine-year-old Bp. Joseph Tyson of Yakima, Washington (who has rarely demonstrated any friendliness or respect for pro-lifers in his diocese) has done it again — and this time his insult goes far beyond the borders of his own diocese. A pro-life mobile medical unit that drives around and places itself in front of abortion chambers to provide pregnancy testing and ultrasounds for abortion-minded women had a fundraiser dinner this past weekend to raise money for a second unit.

Historic Chicago church gets new owner, restoration plan

February 29, 2016 World News Comments Off on Historic Chicago church gets new owner, restoration plan

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago on Sunday announced it has transferred ownership of a shrine ravaged by a fire in October to the community of priests that has rented the historic building since 2008. The Shrine of Christ the King, at 64th Street and Woodlawn Avenue, had been slated for demolition after church leaders estimated restoration costs at about $3 million. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, which has an office next to the charred church building, said it will immediately begin to stabilize the church and plans a full restoration. “We’re rebuilding a center that has brought peace and goodness to the neighborhood,” said the Rev. Matthew L. Talarico, the institute’s provincial superior in the U.S.,…Continue Reading

Catholic leaders win some, lose some in Italy’s new gay unions measure

February 27, 2016 World News Comments Off on Catholic leaders win some, lose some in Italy’s new gay unions measure

ROME (RNS) The Italian Senate’s decision to legalize same-sex unions is being viewed by many as a victory for conservative Catholics after those opposed to the bill succeeded in stripping a key component of the proposed law regarding family rights for gays. Senators approved the bill — which will provide a new legal framework for straight or gay couples — on Thursday (Feb. 25) following nearly a month of intense debates over whether to legalize civil partnerships. The bill passed with 173 votes in favor and 71 against and will now need to be approved by Italy’s Parliament before becoming law, a step widely viewed as a foregone conclusion. By a large margin Italians support civil unions for gays, though
