Christians Must Walk The Walk

Ever since the Supreme Court ruling on the abomination known as same-sex “marriage,” emboldened same-sex couples carrying their Obama-issued carte blanche are smugly walking into their respective state courts demanding to be treated like queens as they apply for state-issued marriage licenses.
This was the likely expectation since the Supreme Court dropped that huge rainbow-colored glitter bomb on us this past summer.
Then there are people who are refusing to issue those licenses, like the Rowan County, Ky., court clerk whose name is Kim Davis. She has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and she is scheduled to face a federal judge as I am writing and submitting this column to my editor.
Davis and two other court clerks in Kentucky have taken a stand against same-sex “marriage.” They have all cited their Christian beliefs on marriage as the basis for their actions. We knew this would happen eventually, because there are many of us Christians who refuse to be forced into accepting things we know are absolutely wrong and evil.
According to Bryan Fischer at the American Family Association, Davis is actually abiding by the Constitution. Fischer states in a recent column: “The Constitution could not be any clearer. The very first words, after the Preamble, are these: ‘All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.’
“If all legislative powers have been vested in Congress, how many legislative powers does that leave for the Supreme Court? None, zip, nada, zilch. The Supreme Court has not one ounce of legitimate authority to write law, to overturn law, or to amend law. None.”
That sounds like a solid argument by Fischer and I applaud Davis for following our Constitution and not letting politically correct bully judges push her around. While this takes care of the legal aspects in my opinion, there is another important dimension in this case that is playing itself out in the public eye.
Davis herself has not been a shining example of what it means to be married. Davis has been married four times and divorced three times. She is a born-again Christian who says she has found the Lord and that she repented in her ways about four and a half years ago. Prior to that, however, it sounds like she was playing the marital version of musical chairs.
What this tells me is that we are all constantly under a societal microscope once we take a public stand on moral issues. Had Davis not gone through a marital revolving door in her own life, her argument and position would have much more credibility. The secular anti-Christian mainstream media are latching on to Davis’ past like a newborn calf attaches to its mother.
Davis has been called out as a supposed hypocrite who can “make a mockery” of marriage, yet take the moral high ground by denying others she deems unworthy of a marriage license despite her own questionable marital history.
I guess the one thing that the secularists do not understand is forgiveness, unless it applies to lecherous or conniving politicians on the left. They cannot understand, or willingly lack the desire to understand, that if one asks God for forgiveness regardless of our sins, there is still hope.
We Catholics, of course, are required to do a lot more than just hold our hands up to the sky and ask Jesus to forgive us. It takes a lot more than simply asking Him to be our personal friend and Savior. Since Davis is not a Catholic, she believes that she is forgiven for her past sins and that she is now “in the clear.”
The bottom line is that once we are old enough to understand, which varies from person to person, we should live according to God’s Commandments. We never know when we will be called to be a public witness to stand up for Christ’s truth. If we have a sordid and checkered past, then we should expect to have that thrown in our face and we had better be prepared to answer how we have changed our ways since. Davis is a perfect example of this.
I especially encourage young people to live according to God’s word, not just simply to avoid any future public embarrassments, but to truly live by His word in order to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him. Our eternal souls and possibly the eternal souls of others depend on all of us living a Godly life. We only get one chance to live this life, so we must make the best of it for Him, not for ourselves.
Whatever reasons Davis has for her past are truly none of anyone’s business, but the anti-Christian, pro-homosexual media will drag her skeletons out of the closet to serve their own sick purposes. Pray that Davis and others like her truly seek forgiveness, hopefully by converting to Catholicism, but, in the meantime, let us trust in Jesus’ mercy and guidance so that people like Davis can prevail in the battle to defend traditional marriage.
