For Biden, War Has Its Advantages
For Biden, War Has Its Advantages
By CHRISTOPHER MANION
“God has not been preparing the English-speaking and Teutonic peoples for 1000 years for nothing but vain and idle self-contemplation and self-admiration. No, He made us master organizers of the world to establish system where chaos reigned. He has given us the spirit of progress to overwhelm the forces of reaction throughout the earth. . . . Were it not for such a force as this the world would relapse into barbarism and night. And of all our race, He has marked the American people as his choosers as his chosen nation to finally lead in the redemption of the world.” — Albert J. Beveridge, historian and Progressive senator from Indiana, 1897
- + + Is our country God’s “Chosen Nation”? Is it our divinely ordained duty to “to overwhelm the forces of reaction throughout the earth”?
Woodrow Wilson wanted to “make the world safe for democracy,” but he had to persuade the public, who wanted to stay out of Europe’s constant wars. But Wilson had the help of the British Foreign Office, where the “Wellington Group” masterminded a very effective, and very secret, campaign to influence both its supporters in the U.S government and in the media.
Of course, as in all wars, many foreign spies were attempting to infiltrate the U.S. prior to March 1917, when Wilson asked Congress to declare war. Those efforts continued during the war as well. Most of these operations, especially those of the Germans, were roughshod and easily detectable. The British efforts, however, were never leaked, because the Wellington group, run out of the British Foreign Office, was so tightly compartmentalized that their cover was never blown.
So those British influencers played a vital role in the U.S. conduct of the war, even though Wilson didn’t even know they existed (and neither did anyone else).
After the outbreak of the European war in 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt promised “again and again and again” to keep the U.S. out of it.
Did he mean it? That question has stirred controversy ever since. But the Communists had no such peaceful intentions, and thanks to spies like England’s Cambridge Five, America’s Rosenbergs and Alger Hiss, and a constellation of other Soviet collaborators, FDR’s entry into World War II as an ally of “Uncle Joe” Stalin was assured.
On reflection, we should observe that at least the First and Second World Wars were legally declared by Congress, and we won them both.
We haven’t won a single war since.
The lies of LBJ, McNamara’s band, and a host of others during the Viet Nam War are now widely known. We lost.
We lost again in Iraq and in Afghanistan. The lies that got us there have now been exposed, but “Dozens made Billions and Thousands Made Millions” — and none of them ever went to jail or gave the money back.
Today the Taliban terrorists have one of the best-equipped militaries in Central Asia.
Act Now, Ask Questions Later
“Just three days removed from these events, Americans do not yet have the distance of history. But our responsibility to history is already clear: to answer these attacks and rid the world of evil” — George W. Bush, September 14, 2001
As the Iraq War began, Archbishop O’Brien, the military’s chief Catholic chaplain, “hoped that all factors which have led to our intervention will eventually be made public.” The same expectation abides today about Ukraine, and the archbishop’s prediction in 2003 is true about any war: “Long after the hostilities cease, the debate likely will continue.”
Fifteen months ago, few Americans could find Ukraine on a map, and even fewer had the “distance of history” to understand the country’s intricate relationship with Russia that stretched back over a thousand years.
Yet, when Russian troops invaded Ukraine, our country experienced a rare moment of unity as millions of people of goodwill cheered the Ukrainians on.
Immediately, the Biden Administration and bipartisan majorities on Capitol Hill opened the spigot for tens of billion in U.S. financial and military support for Ukraine. The intensity of the crisis apparently precluded the possibility of public debate regarding the legality or constitutionality of the enterprise as the billions flowed freely. The urgency dictated that traditional norms of oversight and accountability were set aside, as Ukrainian flags appeared on mailboxes nationwide.
In Iraq, Archbishop O’Brien had “hoped that all factors which have led to our intervention will eventually be made public.” That hope undoubtedly persists today about Ukraine, although, in Archbishop O’Brien’s words twenty years ago, “Long after the hostilities cease the debate likely will continue.”
And then, just days ago, in one of the most damaging security breaches in our history, a flood of highly classified materials was released on the Internet. More surprising still, the Biden Administration confirmed their veracity, and Secretary of Defense Austin promised to find the source(s) of the leak.
On reviewing some of those materials, a prominent supporter of the U.S. war in Ukraine raged that “Joe Biden doesn’t really want to win the war. This entire charade has been put on for U.S. domestic consumption.”
When Epithets Rule,
Truth Is Overruled
Well, the first casualty of war is truth, and the “fog of war” makes the truth all the easier to conceal. But that “fog” has a domestic side as well. And as we ponder that distraught war supporter’s outburst, we wonder, what truths could Joe Biden be attempting to hide? And how is he doing it?
Before the Russian invasion, Biden was casual, even callous, as his foreign policies collapsed around the world. His unprecedented destruction of our own country was even worse.
How to distract the citizens from their impending ruin?
Well, when it comes to “domestic consumption,” nothing is more consuming for the Left than Donald Trump, and when Russian troops crossed the Ukraine border, they supplied Biden, Pelosi, et al. with the strategic weapon they loved the most:
“Russia, Russia! Trump is a Putin Stooge!”
Ever since Hillary Clinton blamed Trump and Russia for revealing the contents of her private server, the Democrat Left has beaten the “Trump!! Russia!!” drum whenever and wherever possible. Mimicking Lenin’s 1917 revolutionary propaganda, this drumbeat has now been consecrated as a sacred and revered myth in the ideological ontology of the Left.
That myth, while effective for years, had drifted from the public mind as Biden’s serial disasters mounted, but the Ukraine war gave the Left everything it needed to resuscitate the cadaver.
And it has worked, for a year and more. But as the Ukraine war has dragged on, the Ukrainian flags began to fade.
And now for something completely different!
Enter the indictment of Trump in New York. Another tune, the same beat, the same drum.
And what are they desperately trying to drown out?
Joe Biden’s handlers are overseeing a coordinated, pervasive, and perverse effort to destroy the United States. Helping them is a powerful coalition of elites whose leaders hope to gain not only financially, but metaphysically: They are at war with Jefferson’s “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” which means that the vast majority of Americans are their sworn enemy.
The China Virus lockdowns had dealt Americans a grievous blow. We emerged as a defeated people, intimidated, bossed around, and governed by diktats that closed our churches and our communities. That gave Biden, the elites, and the Left the opening to seize every lever of power, inside and outside of government. They will continue to use that power to bring the country to its knees until they’re stopped.
The controllers of the public conversation will use Ukraine, “Putin Stooge!!”, and “Trump!!” to distract us while they perpetuate this perdition because, to put it simply, it’s working.
While Sen. Beveridge saw the United States as the world’s best defense against barbarism 127 years ago, today’s Left intends to stand Mr. Beveridge on his head and make our country the engine of barbarism.
By force, if necessary.
