Voting Is A Privilege And An Obligation

March 20, 2016 Frontpage 8 Comments

By REY FLORES

During a recent episode of ChurchMilitant.TV’s “Mic’d Up” webcast with Michael Voris, Catholic blogger Matt Walsh proposed that Catholics consider abstaining altogether from voting, given the poor choices of potential general election presidential candidates.
On the show Walsh stated: “So the only answer there if you’re faced with a situation like that (Clinton vs. Trump) is, as Catholics, we can never affirm evil or affirm tyranny, even if it is the lesser than the other option in our view, which oftentimes it isn’t really, so the only answer is to abstain.”
Meanwhile, in Part Three under “The Duties of Citizens” of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we are instructed in no uncertain terms that it is our moral obligation to participate in our society’s political process by voting:
N. 2240: “Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country.
“‘Pay to all of them their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due’ (Romans 13:7).”
So while Walsh finds himself conflicted, as are many of us U.S. voting Catholics, we are to remain obedient and “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s”.
For anyone who has a public forum with followers who count on the writer, blogger, or pundit to help them form their opinions on matters of abortion, marriage, politics, or life in general, it is at the very least careless, and at worst irresponsible, to make such statements or recommendations.
If Walsh wants to forgo his privilege as an American to vote, he has every right to do so, but no one should follow his lead.
I agree with Walsh that deciding between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump isn’t exactly the ideal selection for devout practicing Catholics, but as moral theologian Fr. Heribert Jone, OFM Cap., once wrote:
“Voting is a civic duty which would seem to bind at least under venial sin whenever a good candidate has an unworthy opponent. It might even be a mortal sin if one’s refusal to vote would result in the election of an unworthy candidate.”
So I hate to break it to those Catholics who think they can make up their own version of Catholicism — but you can’t. If you fail to exercise your right as an American to vote, not only is it a sin of omission, but also by your deliberate lack of participation you are complicit in helping the worse candidate win an elected office.
It is understandable that we all feel quite frustrated with the current state of politics, but aside from the moral duties to participate in the election process, one’s refusal to vote is also a slap in the face to all Americans who once could not vote because of the color of their skin, their gender, and ironically enough because of their faith and religious beliefs.
In the Colonial Williamsburg website History.org, we learn: “African Americans and Native Americans were excluded (from voting), and at different times and places, the Protestant majority denied the vote to Catholics and Jews. In some places, propertied women, free blacks, and Native Americans could vote, but those exceptions were just that. They were not signs of a popular belief in universal suffrage.”
It would be fantastic if we had a few Traditional Latin Mass Catholics or more orthodox Catholics running for office, but that isn’t the case in most election campaigns.
Even when we’ve had so-called Catholics in office, they turn out to be pro-abortion, pro-homosexual dissenters like Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, and the late Ted Kennedy.
My point is that if we are seeking spiritual and moral leadership from our politicians, then we are in bigger trouble and in deeper confusion than we think. If we were to solely support and vote for any given candidate based on his or her moral and spiritual character, we’d have hardly anyone to vote for.
So if it does end up being Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump in the general election, who will Matt Walsh vote for, if he votes at all? Who will you vote for?
Who will I vote for? I can at least tell you who I definitely will not be voting for, but you can probably guess who she is.
If we really do want to “make America great again” as Trump likes to say, perhaps we should look in the mirror and inside ourselves more closely to see what our own moral and spiritual characters are, as voters and otherwise.

This little blurb is a pretty slick way to pave the way for people everywhere and always to be forced to choose to vote one of two diabolical candidates…the situation up till now has been safely hypothetical…up till now it’s been less than realistic.

I have to say that your lack of careful and prudent reading and understanding of the CCC is one more testament to just how much Catholics in the West truly need to be catechized – properly and soundly. As with the Bible, the Catechism must be read in context and properly to be understood and implemented properly…We cannot rip a line or two from here or there (moral theologian or not) and read these in a vacuum. A better way to approach this topic would be to start at the 2234 and read through to 2246 – just for starters.

Firstly, it is not illegal or criminal in any way NOT to vote, so should we abstain from our RIGHT to vote we are not breaking any civil or criminal laws by doing so – forcing someone to vote for a candidate against their will or forcing someone to abstain from voting…now that’s another matter…

Secondly, 2240 in particular must be understood as being morally obligated to participate in the moral good by not abstaining, or by exercising a citizens’ right to vote by voting for a candidate that exhibits the desire, ability and duty to bring some moral good to the table hence to the public common good. The trouble here is the the American voter in this situation has NO candidate (after a CAREFUL examination of conscience and the platform of the individuals involved in running for office) to vote for where there can be any realistic expectation of some positive outcome benefiting society. Trump is as Liberal as Clinton and if the Republicans kick him to the curb, he’s already stated he’ll run independently. To suggest that we are morally bound to vote for one lawfully evil monster or the other chaotically evil one or we are as morally reprehensible and guilty as they, is twisting the CCC to a breaking point – it’s a theological trap which misrepresents the faithful’s role and CCC’s teaching value. This approach whiffs of the same kind of trap the Pharisee’s tried to implement on Jesus when they approached him concerning Marriage and Taxes. Bottom line is that COMPULSORY VOTING is not the law of the land in North America – but since the CCC encompases Catholics world wide the wording must be read with a clear understanding given a wide variety of circumstances – applied somewhat differently here than say for instances in many Latin American Countries…A particular set of circumstances which don’t apply here in N.A..

Mr. Madore, you appear to be confusing US law with Catholic moral principles. Of course at civil law you are free to stay home on Election Day. At civil law we also are free to murder unborn children. Both are forbidden at moral law (obviously not to the same degree). Trump’s credentials may well be questionable as you say. However, no one can claim that these failings are just as bad as Hillary’s proven track record. If you’re looking at outcomes, and that is a valid consideration, what beneficial outcome would you foresee by not voting?

      • http://thepickypainter.net Joe Madore

The benefit to 1 or 2 people not showing up at the poles would be non-existent Janet. However, the benefit of sending the message that tens of millions of Catholics not showing up to the poles would be an undeniable show that a large group will support neither platform (Clinton’s or Trump’s). This would make an overnight show of force that could spark significant change.

If the voting public keeps supporting 1 of 2 positions offered (neither anything other than abuse) and Catholics continue to take part in that same sort of dog and pony show, how shall any change ever be effected? The Catholic mind is a discerning one. We have absolutely zero reason to take Trump at any word that he’s any less Pro-Choice as Clinton – up till less than a year ago, he was walking the same walk and talking the same talk. He is the poster child for “Opportunism”. Being Catholic doesn’t mean turning off our common sense. And I assure you, there is no confusion between law and moral principle here. To call Trump’s credentials “questionable” would be laughable, if it were not such a repugnant statement to any good sense God gave us. The difference between Clinton and Trump is this…Clinton is the reliable lawful evil (like Nazism was lawfully given the green light to snuff our Jews) and Trump is the chaotic evil that’s only as predictable as far as we can see how any given situation benefits him directly. He’s already stated he’d put Pro-choice people in positions of influence and authority should he be elected to the most powerful office in the world. He has zero credibility on stance of family, life, professional conduct or moral fiber. Watching him while debating is nothing short of embarrassing – this is no man to represent the most powerful country on Earth.

Voting for him is no better than Clinton for almost the very same set of reasons. Do you honestly believe for a second that Christ would hold us to putting either him or Clinton in a position of power like that? We do not have any obligation to aid evil in its lust for power. Putting either person in office is an ABUSE of our right to vote. This isn’t a lesser of two evil’s scenario – and even if it were, it would still be evil…but it isn’t that type of scenario. Voting is not Compulsory in the US or Canada and as such we are under no obligation to vote for one devil or the other. I urge you to re-read the Catechism. Voting in a man like Trump makes everybody involved equally responsible for the mess that comes out of that – there will be no washing our hands of that.

We don’t have to acquiesce to evil…certainly not in this situation.

How do we approach Jesus at our final judgement and explain to him that we voted in someone like Trump or Clinton or anybody else of their ilk because we were making the “most moral choice or least a-moral one”. Do any of us honestly believe that the “just following orders” line will hold any weight with our Blessed Lord when we could have said “No”? Can you imagine an Apostle voting in either of them? I certainly can’t.

Can you imagine the totally justifiable guilt each that every person will feel with the fallout of placing either person in power?
How would any of us be able to look at ourselves in the mirror after saying out loud “I voted him/her in…”?
It seems to me that this could be very fairly compared to doing what Adam did in Genesis when he attempted to blame his disobedience on God for having given him the woman (Eve of course) who swayed him off course…Only now we’re going to put the onus of responsibility on our Faith and ultimately God for claiming to have only 2 choices in a situation like this one. Adam would have been obedient by saying “No” to the offer he was given.

This isn’t nearly as complicated as it’s being made out to be – it’s really quite simple – neither is a leader – they are both mis-leaders.

I would also like to add this…Abortion for any reason is intrinsically evil and therefore mortally sinful…are we expected for a second to hold to the belief that not showing up to the poles is also intrinsically evil under every circumstance and therefore also a mortally evil act (of omission perhaps)?

I found this little blurb which I thought quite applicable:

(I found the following on an SSPX page concerning voting – I do not follow or endorse that society, but I believe this to be honestly and accurately presented information, so here it is…If anybody can give me reason to disregard this information, please do so…I do not wish to spread falsehood or lead anybody down a path away from sound Church teaching and its proper implementation).

Pope Pius XII speaking to parish priests in Rome.
        Dated, March 10, 1948:

In the present circumstances, it is a strict obligation for all those who have the right to vote, men and women, to take part in the elections. Whoever abstains from doing so, in particular by indolence or weakness, commits a sin grave in itself, a mortal fault. Each one must follow the dictate of his own conscience. However, it is obvious that the voice of conscience imposes on every Catholic to give his vote to the candidates who offer truly sufficient guarantees for the protection of the rights of God and of souls, for the true good of individuals, families and of society, according to the love of God and Catholic moral teaching.

Now, I ask you…which candidate fills that set of criterion???

Now – if going out to vote at all costs can mean spoiling your vote and essentially still voting for nobody, then…well…you’ve got my vote:)

        God Bless.

      • http://thepickypainter.net Joe Madore

You’re right Janet – Our hands are tied, or forced on this…as it were…or is 🙂 It would appear we have to vote – we have to choose…Punishment for unfaithful living???

      • MaryB435

The only beneficial outcome of not voting I could see–and it would be a long-shot–would be the slim possibility of FINALLY knocking some sense into the GOP. Like I said, a long-shot.

  • Jeff Wynne

Short term results have long term consequences. You train the marketplace thru consumerism. What you don’t buy forces the marketplace to come up with something you will buy. The Pro-Life cause has been hurt because there is not one candidate who has strongly offered a true Human Life Amendment. If American Catholics all abstained from voting for this stated reason, you can bet that other Christians would follow suit, and the marketplace would swing to satisfy these consumers. Of course, we could stay the course and remain the holocaust deniers that we have remained for 40+ years. Or one could not vote stating the reason explicitly as a true vote for the long term.

  • MaryB435

I understand that we are obligated to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s, but………haven’t we come into this situation gradually, mainly BECAUSE we’ve allowed ourselves to be blackmailed year after year after year into voting for the LESSER of two evils? And HASN’T that just GUARANTEED that the lesser of two evils just keeps getting worse and worse, until there is very little difference between the two major political parties?
The situation (of America) reminds me of a 500-pound patient who never did take care of himself, dying of congestive heart failure, now telling the doctor that he has a duty to “fix it”. The patient panics when the doctor says that there IS NO “quick-fix”. The patient tells the doctor he has a moral obligation to PRODUCE the “magic pill”, or the “magic vote”. If only the patient–America–had listened sooner. And, of course, in this litigious culture, the poor doctor/citizen will get blamed for all the side-effects of the essentially useless “magic pill/magic vote”, whether or not he gives it. It’s that old panic mentality–“WE MUST DO SOMETHING–ANYTHING–EVEN IF WE KNOW IT’S USELESS!”
Perhaps NOT voting is the only option. I’m still not sure what I’ll do when the time comes, and I’m not at all sure that it’s wise to tip my hand–not that MY vote has EVER made a difference–and I’ve voted in every election since I was old enough– and not that ANY candidate cares what I think. I am certain that time spent with our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration is much more valuable than time spent in the voting booth! While my vote has never made a difference, prayer definitely will do good–even prayers for Caesar! Let’s pray for our country.
If voting makes you feel as if you are helping, go ahead–I won’t try to make you feel guilty for voting for someone I don’t like; I understand, there are no good choices.
The Republican Party feels that it can put up any RINO-slop in the form of a candidate because pro-lifers will reflexively choose that particular slop, because, after-all, Republican slop is usually slightly less evil than the deliberately EVIL candidates the Democrats always put up!
In this way, Republican candidates get worse and worse each cycle, because the people never demand better. We’ve NEVER demanded that GOP candidates be GOOD, just LESS BAD than the Dems. If the Republicans won’t “man-up”, they might just as well go the way of the Whigs. We’ll NEVER get a good GOP candidate if we keep voting for their candidates no matter how lousy! (Yes, I KNOW it’s too late, but I HAVE been saying this for years–and nobody’s listened.) Perhaps, as a matter of strategy, we MUST tell the Republican Party to take a flying leap. Perhaps THAT’S the way to fulfill our duty. Perhaps excising that malignant tumor will be the only way to build a Party that will really work.
The Democrat Party is the EVIL party–the party of Sodom and abortion. The Republican Party is the STUPID party. The current panic in the Republican party is very unsettling, but there is a just glimmer of hope in this. Do you think it’s POSSIBLE that the STUPID party is finally getting it through it’s thick skull that the people are disgusted and enraged? Nah, they probably STILL haven’t a clue!
I’m talking about the GOP party bosses; there are many VERY good Republican candidates for lower offices. These are the good ones who routinely get thrown under the bus by the party bosses. The party BOSSES need to go the way of the Whigs! Not voting just might help that happen. We should have done it sooner.
OR, we can admit the truth. Politics will never save us. Only God can do that. Our problem is that our culture has abandoned God, though He has given us so many chances to repent. We need to turn back to God.
What we REALLY need to do is to evangelize our culture. We live in a pornified, baby-killing culture, and there are a lot of people who THINK THAT’S JUST FINE! THIS is our real problem!
America reminds me of a dying patient. Our Catholic faith REQUIRES us to give ordinary care, but, sad as it is to say, we are not REQUIRED to provide EXTRA-ordinary treatment to the dying patient, especially when there is no reasonable expectation that that treatment will help. Please don’t try to “guilt” me into voting for the “lesser of two evils” when it’s getting harder and harder to tell WHICH is the “lesser”. The various promises of two candidates mean nothing, especially since they have both consistently lied. HIS phony promises SOUND better than HER phony promises–SO WHAT? Neither is trustworthy. If I don’t vote for HIM, I’ll get blamed for whatever mess SHE’S sure to make, and if I don’t vote for HER, I’ll get blamed for whatever mess HE’S sure to make! It’s not MY fault that they’re both rotten!
But don’t worry– unless there’s a miraculous conversion– I WON’T vote for HER!
This election cycle has been the STRANGEST of my life, more like a side-show than anything else. Don’t panic; it never helps. And there may still be more bizarre “surprises” to come.
    “Jesus, I Trust in You!”

Why is the discussion limited to voting for just one of the two major political parties? Over the years when faced with unworthy candidates in either major political party, I have voted for a candidate for the Constitution Party to express my disdain for choices on the ballot. If you look at the seven principles of the Constitution Party, it puts the Republican Party to shame. http://www.constitutionparty.com/our-principles/seven-principles/
