Serious Hitchcock Errors… Mean That Book Must Be Corrected

May 28, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Serious Hitchcock Errors… Mean That Book Must Be Corrected

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — I loved to read St. Louis, Mo., historian James Hitchcock’s opinion column some decades ago in the National Catholic Register, when I also wrote for that paper. I was pleased, of course, when he occasionally referred favorably to something I’d written. In his August 30, 1981, Register column, Hitchcock cited my Register article calling unfavorable attention to the “country club set” of, as Hitchcock put it, “old-line Republicans…who regard pro-lifers as a bunch of scruffy fanatics whose presence disfigures the Grand Old Party.” Arizona’s Sen. Barry Goldwater was the “best example” of such Republicans, he said. Goldwater narrowly had won re-election to his final term in the U.S. Senate less than a year earlier, assisted…Continue Reading

The Blessed Virgin And St. Joseph… A Marriage Truly Made In Heaven

May 27, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on The Blessed Virgin And St. Joseph… A Marriage Truly Made In Heaven

By JAMES MONTI For several centuries there was on the liturgical calendars of several religious orders a feast day that few know of today — Desponsatio beatae Mariae Virginis — the Espousal of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a celebration of the marriage of Our Lady to St. Joseph. Although the Sacred Scriptures recount scarcely more than the essentials regarding this marriage, centuries of reflection on the part of the Church’s saints, pastors, and theologians have opened a vista upon this perfect union of two hearts, a union both virginal and truly nuptial. In his 1904 book The Mirror of True Manhood, a collection of meditations upon the life of St. Joseph, Fr. John Mullany (1853-1916) describes the marriage of Mary…Continue Reading

A New Birth Control Commission?

May 26, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on A New Birth Control Commission?

By JOHN F. KIPPLEY (Editor’s Note: At this point, reports about a possible new birth control commission are unconfirmed. This commentary first appeared on http://nfpandmore.org/wordpress/.) + + + The week of May 13th started wonderfully with widespread efforts to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Fatima. The work week was quickly dimmed, however, by reports that Pope Francis is thinking about convening a special commission to examine Humanae Vitae. But then it occurred to me that a well-balanced commission could serve the Church and world very well. Let’s hear the arguments for marital contraception and/or contraception-in-general. Are there any arguments whose logic does not amount to a full scale abandonment of the basic principles of Christian morality…Continue Reading

Wanda Poltawska… The Stubborn Insistence On Being Human

May 25, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Wanda Poltawska… The Stubborn Insistence On Being Human

By DONALD DeMARCO The city was Toledo, Ohio. The year was 1990. The venue was the dining room in a private home. The audience consisted of several pro-life people, including myself. The speaker was Wanda Poltawska who was relating a series of events in her life that we were most privileged to hear. In 1962, doctors, after diagnosing Poltawska as having throat cancer, planned to subject her to a desperate medical procedure. The auxiliary bishop of Krakow, Karol Wojtyla, a close friend of Wanda, and being vitally concerned about her condition, dispatched a letter to Padre Pio, requesting his intervention: “Venerable Father, I ask that you pray for a forty-year-old mother of four girls, in Krakow, Poland (who during the…Continue Reading

A Movie Review… “Outcasts” And True Social Justice

May 24, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on A Movie Review… “Outcasts” And True Social Justice

By REY FLORES “A bold example of social justice in action” — Follow the cameras of Grassroots Films, the Award-Winning producers of The Human Experience and Child 31, on an unexpected journey across the globe. Travel to the prisons of Central America, walk the dark city streets of London, New York, and Ireland’s most treacherous neighborhoods. Step beyond your comfort zone and into the lives of our modern-day outcasts. + + + I realize that the term social justice is anathema for some of us Catholics. It conjures up visions of leftist agitators worshipping at the low altar of Saul Alinsky and of inner-city parishes soiled by socialist community organizations and their misled organizers. I have been a defender of…Continue Reading

Kentucky Printer Can Refuse LGBT Message

May 23, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Kentucky Printer Can Refuse LGBT Message

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Kentucky Court of Appeals ruling on May 14 affirmed a printer who objected to promoting a message for Lexington’s Gay and Lesbian Services Organization (GLSO) which conflicted with his sincerely held religious beliefs. Hands On Originals’ managing owner, Blaine Adamson, represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, refused to print T-shirts for the 2012 Lexington Pride Festival because he disagreed with the shirt’s message of “pride in being gay.” Although he declined to print the shirts, he offered to refer the GLSO to another printer who would have made the shirts. Unsatisfied, the GLSO filed a complaint with the commission — despite eventually receiving the shirts for free from another printer. In 2014, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human…Continue Reading

And it comes on the heels of two Democratic senators, Patty Murray of Washington and Cory Booker of New Jersey, reintroducing a bill to ban such therapy nationwide. A little background. SOCE, or conversion therapy,…Continue Reading

By JUDE DOUGHERTY Putnam, Hilary, and Ruth Anna Putnam. Pragmatism as a Way of Life: The Lasting Legacy of William James and John Dewey. Edited by David Macarthur. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2017. xi + 475 pp. Cloth, $49.95. This book consists of twenty-seven essays, thirteen by Ruth Anna Putnam, eleven by Hilary Putman, and three jointly written. Fully a third of the volume is devoted to the thought of William James, yet the focus is primarily on the pragmatic naturalism of John Dewey. Early on in the volume, it is made clear that “pragmatism” is a generic term. There is a difference in the meaning of the term as used by Charles Sanders Peirce, by William James, and…Continue Reading

Can The U.S. Fix Afghanistan?

May 19, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Can The U.S. Fix Afghanistan?

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY (Editor’s Note: Terence P. Jeffrey is the editor in chief of CNSnews.com. Creators Syndicate distributed this column.) + + + Three days after the 9/11 attacks both houses of Congress voted correctly — and without objectors — to authorize the president to use force against those who perpetrated the attacks and those who aided them. Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had been living in Afghanistan, where the radical Islamist Taliban regime gave him sanctuary. The U.S. sought to end that regime, capture or kill bin Laden and other al-Qaeda terrorists, and prevent Afghan territory from being used to harbor and train terrorists who could attack the United States in the future. But President George W. Bush…Continue Reading
